Chapter 6 - Bhishma Saves Vichitravirya (Part 1)

Devratha: Your son is invoking you to be a witness of my pledge, mother Ganga! Me, the son of mother Ganga, takes the oath of my mother's holiness, takes the oath of my father's love and trust, mother Satyavati. I won't live like a king of Hastinapur, I will live my whole life as a slave of Hastinapur. I will make sure that your son gets the throne of Hastinapur. And to secure their future I will never marry anyone. I won't make my family. I will live the life of Celibacy.

[At the very moment, Shantanu reaches there. He came there by following Devratha.]

Shantanu shouts: Stop son. While sobbing he says - What did you do, my son? Such a horrible pledge. Such great favor. Have you forgotten favor becomes grief after a certain limit, not happiness?

Devratha: Do not say that. I did not do any favor for you. I have averted every single possibility of future's confliction. Is it not the duty of a prince, father?

Shantanu: You are amazing, my son. Many people do favors but there are less who name it as their duty. Give me a chance to pay you back, my son. Ask for something, son.

Devratha: Give me a boon not to die until I establish the power and Dharma together on the throne of Hastinapur.

Shantanu: I wish you the boon of death. You will die as you want. Everything, the place, the time and the mean will be chosen by you. People will always worship you and you will be known as Bhishma.

[What will be the consequences of such a horrible pledge of Bhishma?]
