I can hear a stream. It doesn't sound too far away. Securing clean water is the top priority but before that, this mantle and fur hat are not suitable for this climate. It's too valuable to throw it away so I think it is better to store it in my backpack and use those to battle against the cold wind during the night because I might stay in this forest for days. It might not be the best camouflage in this forest but it offers a good protection against the elements.
As I am walking toward the stream, there were bunch of foreign floras that I don't recognize. Even the grass patch seems alien to me. After couple of minutes of walking, the river is within my sight. It is crystal clear and seems to be very magical.
When I am about to get closer to the stream, suddenly there were foot stomps. It was too loud and too heavy to be of human size.
I immediately lied into prone. Quietly readying my rifle, I could feel the wind blowing against my face. It seems that it hasn't notice or took scent of me.
As I look upon the stomps' direction, it was a very beautiful creature yet seemed to be not of Earth. I have never saw a creature like that. It looks like moose yet it has a distinctive feature like tusks but with smaller palmate antlers.
This as a good opportunity to secure food for days but the noise from my gunshot would attract uninvited guest but it seems to be better than starving to death. I lift up my rifle and I look through the iron sights as I gauge the distance. It seems to be less than 30 meters away. For that distance, I don't have to worry about air pressure and humidity. I was at the broad side of the creature which is the best angle to shoot its lungs for a clean kill.
My sights are hooked just a bit over the front leg. I take a deep breath. I hold my breath. I squint my right eye. I squeeze the trigger.
The bullet went through both sides and the creature fell down in an instant. It seems that I have pierced both of its lungs. That noise must have been very loud that I am sure most wild animal wouldn't come this way so I might be safe for now but it doesn't mean that I will be safe from humans.
I quickly tied the creature's front leg with vines and hanged it on a tree branch. Then with my knife, i proceeded to cut open its stomach to throw away the innards and drain the blood. As I waited for the blood to be completely drained, I lighted a fire using my matches. Then i proceeded to scoop the water from the river using my iron pot to boil it. An hour has passed and the sky seems to get darker. I cut the carcass into several pieces and left the remaining pieces for nature to take care of it. That meat skewer didn't taste much beside astringent but it is better than nothing.
The sun begin to set. After eating my fill, I began smoking the remaining pieces of meat for later food supply. The smoke again, might attract unwanted guest but it doesn't look like I have much choices.
As I am smoking my meat, suddenly the sound of rustling bushes reached my ear. I quickly cock and ready my rifle. A shadow with a human-like figure then emerges from the dark.
