Reading a book, I looked up as it is the last day that I will be in this orphanage with no home, and no food. A quote stated in there I don't understand. It say's "Although I know the way of the world I am still ignorant of the will of the world. Because although poison may kill sometimes, it is more merciful than death caused by another." Looking at the other children in the small library a few of them seem to be talking about what they need to do to survive. It is no surprise here where we are it is not uncommon for children to be abducted and sold into slavery. Although it is not a common practice and it is not favored it still seen as something natural to do. Even though there is a law prohibiting child slavery, that doesn't stop the flow of children traffickers and kidnappers.
Some even tried to kidnap the youngest prince of our kingdom. All of the perpetrators were captured and executed the following day after their capture. "Alee." Hearing my nickname, I looked at the person who called to me. "Alee, come down here. I want to ask you something." It was the caretaker. Although she knew what was going on and wanted to stop it, she was powerless to do it. Not only strength wise but status wise. As of right now the person calling to me is Kiarania. It is a weird name to pronounce, so she goes by Kira. In the past, she was a slave sooner or later her freedom granted. In need for a place to stay, she started to work at the orphanage.
Having it close down she has been looking for a place to work. Getting down I looked at her face. For the past few days, I have been silent. I don't think I have even said a word. "I need you to talk." With a tilt of my head, she continued. "I don't want to leave you and the other kids without a place to call home for a while, so I discussed with the church. You and the other children will live in a small storage shed that is uninhabited on the churches property until you are of age. Though I would like you to tell the other children." 'Oh, so she wanted me to talk in the end anyway's.' With that she grabbed my shoulders, "Do you understand?" Coughing I spoke with a dry voice. "For more experiments?" Looking down with shame I knew that the only reason why the church offered us a place to stay is to continue doing what they want. "Then you should already know my answer." Walking away I grabbed myself a loaf of bread. 'What is the point of staying where you know you will most likely die.' Walking out of the library some of the kids saw that I discussed with Kira I'm taking a guess, but I think they heard my mention of the experiments. 'Did they think that it was vaccinations when the others were getting sick and dying?' Walking away I grabbed myself a loaf of bread and headed outside. I wanted to play and have fun with other children.
Following after me I was cornered by the other children that heard the discussion. "What do you mean by experiments? Explain yourself." Not answering I took a bite out of the loaf of bread. *BLAM* Looking to my right a fist was bloodied and next to my face. 'Why?' Trembling I couldn't control my body, remembering my father's fist beating me till I vomited blood: the bloodied fist and the sound. I couldn't see straight anymore. 'I'm scared.' "Tell us." With a quaking voice I feel onto the ground fear gripping me, but I was still sane enough to hear and respond to them. "We had been referred to as subjects and always had injections more than once a day. They monitored us throughout the day, and when one of us fell ill, they would claim that it has to work. In the end, they would die."
The older kid that cornered me against the wall and lashed out seemed to piece together the puzzle. At least that what it looked like to me. 'Almost as if it makes sense to him.' Removing his hand, I fell to the ground. I'm scared, trembling I curled into a ball but then the kid that punched a wall outstretched his hand while asking, "Would you like to survive with us?" 'Why?' Seeing his hand, I have to admit I know that it's most likely not the best idea. Though to survive you must take risks. Looking at his hand, I grabbed it and said, "I'll be in your care." Grabbing his hand he spoke once more, "My name is Jax, and I hope we can work together to survive." Pointing at the three people behind him he said, "This is Alexander, Mavis, and Torian." Nodding their heads, they seemed confused by the situation. "Aleena." Being pulled up after a while, I wondered if he would let my hand go any time soon.
