The next morning Daylor was sitting on a log with a book open and a quill in his hand, he dipped the silver tip back into the ink before he resumed the drawing of the sleeping beast in front of him. Bray came up behind him, her steps silent as to not wake the sleeping carnotaurus, a slight look of amazement on her face as its wounds had been wrapped up.
"Wow captain." she whispered as she sat herself to his left side, careful not to move the log and cause the ink to fall off. "Last I heard the damn beast didn't let anyone near itself or the old captain's body, yet you managed to get it to let you take the body and sort its wounds out."
"Well I have done the best I can for its wounds using healing paste and blessed bandages but I cannot cast so I was unable to heal it" Daylor said, his voice normal as he knew that it would not wake the sleeping dino. "And I have always had a way with animals, sometimes I prefer their company to people."
"Wait, you cannot cast? But John said he saw you make a tea set pour itself while you did paper work" Bray said with visible confusion "Do you mean you haven't trained it, everyone I have heard of can cast with training, even I have some basic spells."
"Nope every little spell I have appeared to cast was actually just a magic item I have acquired or brought, I don't have any data points so I have no ability to cast spells even though I know the theory for many" Daylor said with a tone as if discussing something as trivial as what they would have for dinner. "Even in my old home I could not use any magic."
"That's terrible Captain, I am sorry to hear that." Bray said as she inched closer to her captain as if to console him, then she realised he didn't seem to care about the entire situation. Her eyes were then drawn to the incredibly detailed drawing the captain was doing, shocked as he added even more detail to the scales of the curled up sleeping dinos drawing. "I didn't know you could draw so well."
"Well I was trained in the charm classes mostly, also known as the bardic classes. I can draw, write poems, sing or dance. There's also a large amount of instruments I can play, it seems I was the only one in my classes who couldn't cast. I had to work overly hard so instead of just focusing on a few things and using magic to boost my talents I learned how to do each skill without it." Daylor stated as he finished the last few details; before putting the book down, leaving a brick on the page to keep it open to dry. "I am also the only incubi in known history that cannot use our innate charm or illusion magic. My father disowned me, stripped me of the family title and then banished me to the overworld. I know he hates me even more now that my sister ran from home to follow me."
Bray looked at her Captain with a look of shock, not one of his soldiers had known any of this. Hell only two of his last party knew of this, she gently placed a hand on his shoulder.
"You haven't been very open before, captain, how come you tell this to me?" she said with a soft smile to him as she gently licked her thumb then wiped a bit of ink off his cheek.
"Well I do feel relaxed around you Bray, and you have tried to kill me less than half of my old party" He said with a teasing smile. Before bursting into laughter, the dinosaur had let out a loud snore in her sleep which made Bray jump. "Anyway it's not like you to just randomly come to me when it isn't my shift on watch what's up?"
"First of John has the report of new enlistments, the ten wounded soldiers have gone with the refugees back, some of them are going to take the wounded to the main healers in the capital. Out of those who have stayed behind are the forty healthy or barely injured soldiers from Gryphon, and fifty men and women have enlisted to help. However there's a slight issue sir." Bray said with her tone going professional as she spoke.
"Which is?" Daylor asked with slight concern in his voice.
"They have not enlisted as militia, they have enlisted to become full soldiers sir. I know you have permission to command the milita bu-'' she was saying before Daylor interrupted her.
"Take them, split ten to be trained to join the rest of the gryphons and the remaining forty can be trained to join us." He commanded in a tone that left no argument. As if he knew what she would say he carried on. "If the king wants to make an issue with it he can bring it up with me after this entire thing is finished."
"Sir yes Sir" Bray replied with a blatant look of concern covering her face but she did not bring it up again. "Who is going to be the leader of Gryphon Dìonadair Captain?"
"It isn't a Dìonadair anymore" Daylor said with a grimace. "It is down to fifty that makes it a Sgioba, Have Daividh become their new Lieutenant. Now they are the second Sgioba to our Dionadair. Also inform Daividh that instead of being a standard Lieutenant he is my second Lieutenant."
"Umm what's the difference?" she asked as she stood up.
"It puts him higher in the command chain, if he was a standard Lieutenant he would just control the Sgioba he was assigned to, him being the second Lieutenant means he is the third in command. In the case of mine and John's death instead of their being an argument he would assume the role of Captain." Daylor replied as he watched Sgàil fly down and land beside the giant sleeping dinosaur, it seemed to curl against the beast and shortly after it joined it in a deep sleep, the shadows leaking from its wings lessening slightly.
"Right captain, oh before I forget" she quickly ran to the little wall of the stables before returning with a bundle wrapped in a soft silk, in the middle of which was a box that immited warmth. "John said you have a habit of getting too worried about those under your command. Even on days he forces you to take off and that you don't tend to remember to have lunch so I made you some."
Daylor looked at the blushing Bray before taking it with a beaming smile, out of the entire group she was definitely the best cook of them all. He loved the elven dishes she cooked as did the rest of the party.
"Thank you kindly Bray, that's very kind and thoughtful of you" He said to her as he gave her a genuine smile which she replied back with a happy smile of her own before turning to deliver Daylors commands to John, before she turned back to ask a final question. "Oh sir before I forget, if you don't mind me asking what was the title your dad stripped from you in your realm?"
"Well let's just say, my old friend Inarus called me the banished prince for a reason" Daylor responded with a chuckle, which grew into another laugh when he saw the shock on her face. He laughed loud enough in fact that the sleeping Sgàil and dinosaur both let out a snort of annoyance in their sleep which silenced his laugh and left him with a beaming smile.
