"Victoria!" Damien sorrowfully said her name. He couldn't believe that she was already gone. Artemis opened her eyes for the first time and looked at Damien inquisitively. "Artemis, you look beautiful, just like your mother. I will be there for you, always."
The baby looked at him and smiled. She seemed to have understood everything he said. Damien smiled in return even though he had just lost his best friend. Damien couldn't help speaking when he saw her smile, "I don't know which name you will want to go by, but to honor your mother, I will call you Ha Na as she wanted. I'll try to find your grandparents. They returned to Korea when I was in Japan."
As Damien was speaking to Artemis, he heard voices from the hall.
"Sir, you are not allowed to be here. The patient specifically said that only her family could be in there with her!" A nurse spoke resolutely.
"I am her husband! I am the child's father!" Damien identified the second voice as Richard Corstair's. He put Artemis in another nurse's hands before he rushed to open the door.
"How dare you! You say you are her husband, yet you are the one who killed her!" Damien was furious. How could Richard try to see his child and wife after he put them in this position? "If you truly cared for your wife, you would turn yourself in for her murder."
"Haha! What bullsh*t are you spouting? I am her legal husband and the father of our child. You can say all your baseless claims, but that won't stop me from getting custody of the child!" Richard laughed as he replied.
"Do you really think so? You are one of the most wanted men in the country for the crimes you are known to have committed. SECURITY!" Damien knew his options were few, so he decided to get others involved directly to hold Richard while the cops arrived. Gunshot victims are always reported to the police as they are often related to violent crimes, as in this case. Hospital security rushed over and saw that a man was pushing a nurse to try and enter a room. They immediately took action and tackled him to the ground before cuffing him. "He is a known drug and human trafficker, and its possible that he is responsible for what happened to the patient. Please hold him carefully and don't let him go until the cops and FBI arrive."
"Will do, sir. Thank you for your cooperation," One of the burly security guards replied. They dragged Richard to a separate room and kept him confined as they called the cops and FBI to report who they had captured. They would get a hefty reward for their achievement.
15 minutes later
Damien heard someone knocking on the door, so he said, "Come in."
"Hello, sir. How are you doing today? My name is William Herb or Detective Herb. I am here because of the report from the hospital about the gunshot wounds. Can you please explain what you know of the situation?" Detective Herb asked politely.
"I lost my best friend today because our law enforcement was unable to capture the man responsible for this. He was her legal husband, but after she found out that he was involved with drug and human trafficking, she tried to divorce him. Unfortunately, the process had only just begun when he chose to take his revenge through this shooting. I know that what I am saying might just be my conjectures, but I believe that if you look into the evidence at the scene, you will find that the shooters were related to Richard Corstair. He has mentioned that his only connections in the criminal world are not just Tijuana. I think he might be linked with other cartels or syndicates," Damien explained what he knew and what he thought had occurred.
"Thank you for the information. How did you learn of Richard Corstair's activities? I believe that you were the person who supplied the information to put him on the most wanted list. I know you used someone else to present the information, but it was at your request," Detective Herb had done his homework on this case.
"I used a private detective agency to follow Richard. He was not suspecting anyone following him because he thought that he had hidden his actions from his family, but I had caught him speaking with someone who clearly looked like a junkie in a manner that looked like boss and subordinate, so it set off alarms for me. I loved Victoria as she was the closest person to me. I wish I had the ability to look into Richard far sooner so I could have prevented this. From what I gathered, he has been in this business for almost 10 years," Damien sighed as a lamented. He knew that his wishful thinking couldn't change anything as Victoria had met Richard and they had naturally fallen in love, but not even the best love could hide all secrets forever.
"We will look into all of what you gave us and your conjecture for the crime today as well. Did the victim speak about who will get child custody?"
"She asked me to take care of her child. I fully intend to adopt her as that was Victoria's last wish."
"I'll make sure to send child services over to deal with the transfer process. I know that it is a tough time right now, so thank you for patiently answering my questions."
"I know that Victoria doesn't want me to take action myself, so I can only hope that our law enforcement can properly give her justice," Damien pleaded with the detective.
"We will do our best. If he truly did all of this, then we will get him a death sentence," the detective was convincing.
