Welcome back to another Polaris Files!
Before we start the Tournament Arc, I guess I should go over the different continents of Regulus and where the story takes place.
The World of Regulus as you may have guessed, is a world that is similar to ours, with the same cultures and legends. That is, the legends or myths that we have in our world are actual factions in the world of Regulus. With that in mind, what are the kingdoms that make up this magic and mechanical driven world and what factions inhabit each one?
Regulus is one giant continent with four major kingdoms that control each part of the world.
There is the kingdom of Iota, an Oriental kingdom that holds most asian legends. This is located east of the central Kingdom of Regulus. People like Soma and Lyra are born here due to being in the Tengu and Yama factions. This kingdom favors historical art, silk clothing and an imperial monarchy. Iota has an emperor and a royal family and are well respected in the Kingdom. Iota has a Mage Academy known as "Shinra Academy", a major competitor to Polaris.
The biggest and central kingdom, is the kingdom of Arcadia. It is the city of peace, democracy and innovation. It is the city of Gears, the protector of all the kingdoms. This is also home to Polaris Academy, the renowned school of mages that enrolls people across the globe. Polaris is the number one Mage school in Regulus, that also has a high graduation rate due to the quality of teaching and elite students. The factions that inhabit Arcadia vary, as anyone and everyone comes to Arcadia. People born from
West of Arcadia is the kingdom of Omicron. Unlike Arcadia, Omicron is dubbed as the city of glass. Ether crystals make the whole city, which is a technological marvel even in present day. The government is run by a corporation that controls most of the Ether imports/exports. This corporation is known as "Veil". Omicron is also home to "Serrato Academy", The number 3 Mage school of Regulus.
In the north, is home to a group of islands that make up the War kingdom of Terra. This Oligarchical kingdom is home to Greek, Norse and other European mythologies. This Kingdom focuses on building an army and prepares for war at any moment.
South is the kingdom of Mare. Mare is a divided kingdom next to the ocean, which is constantly in a civil war due to two warring factions attempting to take control of the whole kingdom. Ocean based legends and some that revolve around pirates and lawless lands strive in this kingdom. This is where most black market trading goes on and perhaps even hitmen.
Lastly, the kingdom of Oasis. This is a kingdom southeast of Omicron, in between Mare and Omicron. It is a giant desert with a kingdom shining in the center, they also are ruled by an Emperor.
The kingdom of Oasis contains most of the middle eastern type legends along with Egyptian God factions. This is also where Cleia, the sandstorm Celestial is from.
Now, with that out of the way, the factions. Each child born into Regulus is born with an elemental affinity, something in a child's nervous system that enables them to control a certain element of magic far better than the other known elements. Some children are akin to fire and can handle heat far better than most, some don't get blown away easily due to having a wind affinity, others feel more connected to the dark and others are connected to the light. Due to old history (which will be elaborated as the story progresses), Regulus had been divided into these factions based on birth. The child gains the affinity from their parents but also inherited one defining trait, one that corresponds to one of the factions. This phenomenon is called a 'Mark', a physical trait where magic manifests for a child's body. A certain faction have magic concentrated in their stomachs to disassemble projectiles, small objects and other things. Marks are no more than physical "deformities" that ironically provides a fighting style and help the person.
An example from Chapter 4 would be Hana.
Hana and her family is marked by Nobunaga, her swordsmanship is nothing to take light of. But her Mark only enables her to use magic that enhances her physical characteristics as the mark manifested in her muscles.
As you have seen in her sparring session with Lyra, Hana's Arts revolve around physical enhancements that last for a short while, those Arts are reinforced by her Ether Matrix, which create a veil of WL around her whole body to enhance it even further.
All of these Kingdoms are diverse in their own way from the story perspective and a design perspective. I hope you look forward to Regulus as time goes on, the next Polaris Files are going to be about the darkness in the world, the Wraiths.
