It was a nice Tuesday band practice. Avery was on the pit carts practicing her runs for part two of the band show while Merritt was practicing part four on his drums. Avery trips over her own shoe and falls off the pit cart. Merritt helps Avery up and laughs at her clumsy mistake. Avery joins in on the laughter and looks up at him, "Thanks!" Merritt looks at her while blushing and replies, "Um, no problem." They continue to practice on their music. Keep in mind that there are no other people in the band hall.
Later on, Merritt stops working on his part and turns to Avery, "Hey, wanna take a break?" Avery replies, "Sure I guess.", while giggling at his stupid expression. Merritt walks over the the soda machine and gets a soda and asks Avery, "Want one?" She nods her head while thinking, "Why is he being so nice to me all of a sudden?"
Merritt comes back with the drinks and sits beside Avery on the pit cart. Avery got up her courage and straight out asked him, "Why are you being so nice to me all of a sudden?" Merritt stops drinking his drink and leans in really close to her face. Avery looks at him trying to back away as much as possible. Merritt says to her after a long period of silence while looking straight into her eyes, "Avery, I think I'm in love with you." Avery's eyes widen and she stairs at him in shock. She finally yells at him, "But we can't be together and you know that! You already have a girlfriend!" What Merritt said next made Avery so upset with him. "I could care less about her, I'm in love with you." Merritt leans in super close now and plant's a kiss right on her lips.
Merritt's girlfriend, Belle, walks into the band hall. She looks up from her phone to see her boyfriend and best friend kissing each other. Tears start running down her face as she just stares at them. Avery shoves Merritt away and runs up to Belle. Merritt looks at Belle in shock not knowing that she would be there. Belle stands there and finally says, "How could you Merritt?! I loved you! And Avery I thought you were my best friend?! You knew how much I loved him!" Avery stopped in her tracks from heading towards Belle. She tried to say that it was an accident without stuttering but it didn't work. Merritt walks in front of Avery defending her from having to tell her best friend what was happening. Merritt looked straight at Belle and said, "Yes it's all my fault. Avery has no idea what was happening. I made all the decisions on my own. I realized that I never really had true feelings for you Belle and I'm sorry for not telling you sooner." Belle looks at Merritt and then to Avery. "I just need some time alone for now," she then ran out of the band hall.
Avery tries to chase after Belle but lost sight of her at some point. She had run into the road and tripped. She didn't look both ways before going and a car was coming at her. Avery couldn't see anything other than the headlights on the car. Her body wouldn't listen to her and get up and run. In the next moment, Avery felt like something had swooped her off the ground. She looked up and noticed that Merritt had come and gotten her before that car did. She gripped his shirt while shaking in fear of what might have happened if he didn't come in time.
Merritt carries her into the band hall and bandaged her knees up. Avery looked at Merritt and said, "Thanks for saving me back there." Merritt looked up at her and gave her a smile, "What kind of guy would I be if I let the girl I love die when I could have saved her?" She looked at him and flicked his forehead, "Who says I'm your girl?" Merritt winced at the pain of the flick, "I did"!" Avery rolled her eyes at him and got up to play on her instrument again.
After a while, practice was over and their parents came and picked them up. Merritt goes up to Avery before she gets into the car. "I'm sorry for what happened early and I know that there is nothing I can do to make it right. I just wanted you to know how I feel." Avery just looks at him and nods while getting into the car.
