There are quite a few phrases that are misused. Some of them just sound wrong. One example would be great minds think alike as it was originally used to berate fools who easily agreed with other people. And if you truly want to be recognized as smart, you can't just repeat what has already been said, but you also need to contribute your own ideas.

Curiosity killed the cat is used to warn children against being too curious. However the orignal phrase used to be curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back. This is an ideal example of a statement brought out of context.

Money is the root of all evil actually originated from the bible. The original meaning was that all kinds of evil originated from greed and not all. Greed is just one aspect.

The actual meaning of blood is thicker than water is that the bonds we create by choice are stronger and more important than the people that we are related to by blood. The original phrase was the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. An example would be if you fought side by side with someone through a war and overcame death, a bond stronger than that of family would be created.
