"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bump in to you." The little firefly awkwardly laughed and rubbed the back of his neck.
"Oh, um... it's fine. Really. I should have been paying attention to where I was going." I responded his apology with my own while mimicking his actions and avoiding eye contacted by looking down at my black converse. In the inside, I was panicking, this was the first time I was talking to him, and he sounds so sweet, but I didn't know what to say. But luckily, he sparked the conversation.
"Hey aren't you the kid that lives in the Big House at the end of Hollis street?"
I raised my eyebrows, "You've heard about me?" I asked slightly embarrassed, still avoiding his golden eyes.
"It's a really small town."
"Yeah, right." I chuckled.
A couple of quick seconds of silence passes by, I looked up at Firefly, he seemed like he wanted to say something but was hesitant.
"Well, see y-" I was gonna say a goodbye and head a different direction before I was interrupted, "I've been meaning to ask you something.", I heard him say with his hands behind his back.
That sentence caught me by surprise. No one really cares about the Big House boy on Hollis street. I was just the neglected sibling out of my family, no big deal.
"Yeah?" I asked him, finally making eye contact out of curiosity.
"Can I have your number?"
I almost choked on my own spit.
"Oh," I said in shock, "Um, yeah, sure." I replied with a shrug.
"Great." He flashed a toothy smile.
After we exchanged numbers, he asked me another question.
"Where are you heading?"
"Home." I return to the silly habit of shying away from his gaze.
"Mind if I walk you?"
I think I almost choked an my spit... again. There was no way this was actually happening. Was I really talking to the popular Firefly. Well, that's not his name, his name is Jacob.
"If you don't mind, of course." He offered, while I still stayed silent; dumbfounded. I quickly snapped out of my thoughts to answer.
"Sure." I say, smiling.
