Chapter 5 - Hello From the Other Side

Serena wanted to strangle that cat. She had been waiting for four years! Four f***ing years to get her hands on that key and here it was, conveniently dangling from the collar of that devil's spawn. Why did she have the key anyway? Who gave it to her? Was it even the right key?

Serena detached it from the cat's collar with a scowl and tried to open the lock of her grandma's book. Click! And voíla! It opened easily, fueling fire to Serena's anger. Her grandmother had trusted a stray cat with that key instead of trusting her own granddaughter? She knew it had to be her grandmother who had entrusted the key to that creature with a bad attitude.

She refused to admit that it wasn't the cat who had a bad attitude.

"What the hell are these scribbles?" Serena stared at the first page of the book which was filled from top to bottom with scribbling in some foreign script. She looked at the cat with a questioning gaze thinking if it knew so much already then it must know other things too.

The cat almost looked like she was rolling her eyes. It turned the page with her paw and meowed as if saying, "there you go, dumb human."

If Serena could, she'd squeeze that little neck of that annoying creature but unfortunately, she couldn't because let's admit, the cat was very helpful though mysterious and proud.

From the start, Serena couldn't help but dislike that cat even though a normal person would instantly take a liking to it.

Serena looked at the flipped page and recognized her grandma's handwriting. It was written:

Dear Serena,

My loveliest granddaughter, know that grandma loves you the most. Don't tell your sister I said that. Haha. She's a sensitive child so she might not like if I show partiality to you.

(A tear rolled down Serena's cheek).

Now my dear, I made sure that you get to open this book on your 22nd birthday and I hope that you have. If yes, then Happy Birthday sweet pea and if not then it's probably too late for anything that is in this book. Everything will be useless.

Dearest, in this book are some secrets about our family that I personally wanted to tell you but seeing that my health is deteriorating, I decided to write this all down in case I don't make it till your 22nd birthday.

I have made preparations for the delivery of this book's key to you when it's time. Hopefully, I won't have to use that measure and that I will be the one telling you about our family's legacy.

But if I don't make it... If I die before the right time, then this book will do its intended job. If you have opened this book and I'm dead then I'm guessing Shadow did her job properly. Shadow is a good cat and I expect you to take care of her.

(At this, Serena's sad expression turned sour).

Serena love, there are things in this book which you will find unbelievable but please keep any skepticism aside while reading it. This book contains nothing but the truth and I expect you to consider it just that. The truth. Truth about our family, who we really are...or were.

I will say no more. You should read the book now. And remember, don't be scared. You're not alone honey, I'll be with you forever, in life and even in death.

Love,

Grandma

Serena broke down into tears but before her tears could ruin the book, shadow dragged it away from her. She meowed at Serena, as if trying to calm her down. Serena looked at Shadow, who was patiently waiting for her to stop crying. Was it possible that grandma's spirit resided in this cat? She was just thinking this when the cat shook her head and made a weird face, as if the idea was disgusting. How did she even know what Serena was thinking? The will to strangle that cat came back to her.

Suddenly, she heard some sounds downstairs and got alert. Shadow nudged the book with her nose in Serena's direction with an urgency. She understood and grabbed the book. It was time to get out of the house before they could be found. Serena didn't know why she felt the need to hide from her family but she just did and the damned cat agreed with her so it must be the right instinct.

Serena climbed down the ladder with Shadow. She didn't want to take the cat but grandma had told her to take care of her so she had no choice.

The secret party of a human and a feline reached the cemetery. Serena was panting.

"This is ridiculous. Why the hell are we running? It's not like we're committing a crime or something." She muttered. Shadow sat down beside grandma's gravestone like a queen and meowed at Serena to proceed with the book.

Serena grunted. This cat was too proud and she was stuck with this ceature because of her grandma. She decided to ignore the cat and focused on the book. The next page she looked at was titled The History of the Light Witches.
