The next morning the sun shined brightly through the window of a small bedroom with one dresser, a bed and a nightstand. On the bed laid a little girl sleeping silently. Feeling the warm warmth of the sun on her delicate face the little girl unconsciously held up her hand to shield her eyes from the light. She wanted to sleep some more, however, she thought that she cannot wallow in her sorrow forever. So, she got up and changed out of her night clothes and into a solid blue dress with elbow length sleeves.
She walked out the room and headed towards the kitchen where she saw her new mother preparing breakfast. Noticing the small footsteps coming her way Trinity turn her head with a welcoming smile upon seeing her little one.
"Artemis! Good morning sweetheart," she said in a soft and loving voice.
'Artemis?' she thought, 'Oh that's right they want to call me by the name, Artemis. Artemis that's my new name for now on.'
Not being used to her new name it took her by surprise, so she had a complex look on her face. Trinity noticed the sudden change of expression on her face and spoke to herself inward, 'Maybe it's still a little too early to call the little one by her new name.'
"Sorry dear if you are uncomfortable with the name, I can refrain from calling you it."
The little girl looked up shaking her head back and forth, then she smiled brightly back up at the lovely lady in front of her.
"So, you're okay with your new name? You like the name Artemis?"
The little girl nodded her head as she continued to smile at the young woman, then she pointed over to the countertop.
"Then, what's wrong sweetie? Are you hungry?"
Artemis nodded her head then shook her head side to side. She wanted to help fix breakfast, but she was unable to muster up the courage to speak out loud. She walked closer instead than stood on her tippy-toes looking on the countertop, as her eyes were filled with curiosity.
Trinity looked down at the little one a bit confused at what she was trying to tell her until she saw her eyes sparkling like a gem. "Are you curious about what I'm doing?"
Artemis nod smiled looking up at her.
Trinity smiled happily, at the fact that she was finally showing some interest in her surroundings. "I'm preparing breakfast. Vincent will be getting up soon, so I always try to prepare something for him before he starts his day off. Would you be interested in helping me?"
Artemis nodded again looking towards the food. On the corner was a tall glass bottle filled with a creamy white liquid. A long log that was brown and flaky on the outside but had an off-white sponge-like texture on the inside. An assortment of small jars in the colors of purple, red and black stood against the back wall of the counter. Within a woven basket were some tan and deep blue round-shaped stuff. A metal bowl was full of fruits and slices of raw strips of meat laid on top of a metal plate. After scanning the ingredients on the counter, she looked up at Trinity waiting patiently for her instructions.
"This bottle here is almond milk. It's very yummy and has a light yet creamy taste. I prefer drinking goat milk, but your father refuses to drink it," she said holding up the glass bottle. Putting down the bottle she gestured her hand across the countertop.
"There's fruit in this bowl and blueberry muffin in this basket. I'm sure you will like those.
Then she pointed towards the assortment of small jars. "These are jams made from fruit. You can eat it with just about everything. We usually just eat it on a slice of bread or biscuit. While I fry the bacon, you can coat the bread with the jam. Just pick a jar and use the spoon to spread the jam," she suggested placing a spoon on the table and a plate of sliced bread. She then grabbed the three jams and placing them on the table as well.
Artemis climbed up into the chair by the table and started with the task she was given. Grabbing the spoon and the red jar she scooped out some jam and dropped it on a slice of bread. She used the back of the spoon to evenly spread the jam.
Trinity felt so happy watching the little one being content with the task she gave her. She looked so focused coating each bread.
While Trinity was over by the open fire place frying the strips of raw meat, a husky voice roar from the back of house. Artemis jumped a little upon hearing the voice.
"Is that bacon I smell? Did someone score a few wild boars recently?" asked the husky voice as he walked closer.
"Yes dear. Dave went hunting with his sons a few days ago and his wife dropped over this morning to give me a few packages of meat."
"Great! We haven't had meat in a while." Then he turned his head noticing the little girl at the table holding a spoon in one hand and a slice of bread in the other.
"Are you helping with breakfast?" He asked the little girl in a curious tone.
Deducing that the man was talking to her, Artemis looked at him nodding.
Vincent smiled a little walking towards the table, sitting down at the opposite end from Artemis. He leaned over the table resting his elbow on it and his chin with in the palm of his right hand. He stares down at the girl observing her actions. Artemis froze up a little feeling his gaze on her.
"Dear you are scaring the little one again," Trinity said as she was removing the strips of bacon from the pan. She placed the cook pieces on a metal plate then took them to the dining table. Followed by putting the basket of blueberry muffins on the table. She continued setting the table by taking out three plates, three cups and silverware from the cabinets. Before sitting down at the table, she filled each cup with milk.
"Here you are sweetie. Have some milk," she said handing her a glass first before handing the other to her husband.
Artemis look at the glass of liquid, she took a good whiff of the liquid's aroma before taking a sip of it. Feeling the creamy and sweetness of the delicious liquid on her tongue excited her taste buds. This new liquid known as milk astonished her. The only liquid that was supplied in her village was water, which was a little sweet, but nothing like this.
Thinking about her village she wished she could share these new delicacies with the other villagers. Realizing this will never be a possibility a sudden tear ran down her face. She quickly tried to wipe it away before her new parents saw it.
Both Trinity and Vincent noticed the little one tearing up but remain silent seeing how she was trying to be brave. Artemis took another sip of the creamy milk as she savored the taste, then she picked up the slice of bread she was task with and took a bite. Another unfamiliar taste made her taste buds go crazy. With the eyes of a glutton and cheeks full like a squirrel, the man across from her couldn't help but chuckled.
"Honey don't laugh at her. She's from an isolated village. Of course, coming encounter with so many different types of food would baffle her taste buds," she said with a stern look staring down her husband to stop from laughing.
She turned back to the little one still stuffing her face with a blueberry muffin she smiled lovingly at her. "She's finally eating something other than fruits we should encourage her to eat more. Just don't choke on what you are eating sweetie."
Artemis nodded her head as she continued munching down on the soft and flaky mouthwatering blueberry muffin.
After indulging her taste buds to a variety of new foods she felt as full as a stuffed rabbit. Looking at the satisfied look on the little one's face Vincent couldn't help but laugh again as his wife cleaned the table to wash the dishes. His lips curled up into a smirked observing the little one rubbing her tummy.
"You still seem to be upset about what happened. How about I teach you how to defend yourself from a demon attack?" he announced with a husky and low tone.
