Deep under the surface of Endalium, dirt and rock shift and change into corridors and chambers. Creatures tear into these Labyrinths through breaks in reality often referred to as "gates"

The exact moment which these gates and Labyrinths started to appear has been lost to time. Some people speculate they've always been around, just a natural phenomena, much like fog, or thunder. Others, however, belive them to be a creation, and have taken to studying the gates and experimenting with them.

One such person took the experiments to extremes. They started off harmless enough, but his curiosity overcame his ethics and he started using humans in his experiments. After countless tests, and countless lives, he noticed something strange. The gates reacted to souls, not just human souls, but even other races too. Elves, dwarfs, Orcs, to name a few, they all caused the same reaction with the gates. It wasn't something extravagant like communication with the deceased, it was a simple, very subtle, pulse when something died.

This made the researcher more intrigued, a thousand questions filled his mind, but he was getting none of them answered. He knew the gates reacted to the souls of living beings, but knew nothing of what happened after.

Whats on the other side of the door?...

In an attempt to understand why the gates reacted to souls, he used the highest form of magic in an effort to see if extraction of a soul from the other side to Endalium was possible, then he might be able to get his answers, and possibly a first hand account of what the other side was like. After what seemed like hours and almost at the cost of his own life, he achieved what he was beginning to think impossible... almost.

He had successfully pulled a soul back from a gate, but it weakened him a great deal, and the soul that was pulled seemed to be torn apart upon leaving the gate. the chamber was filled with the sound of the souls pained scream as it appeared to not be able to hold itself together after crossing the threshold.

Witnessing a soul pulled out of a gate and subsequently evaporate into screams and mist, the researcher became elated, and excited.

He was so close.... close to something he couldn't even begin to fathom.
