Chapter 4 - Summer night

The sisters finally took her back to her room, learning afterward that she had been inside the dungeon for a week.

She washed herself and changed her own bandages before changing into a sweatshirt and a pair of jeans despite the dry Summer weather.

"I heard that this week's heatwave will be the hottest in the last twenty years." A girl chatted loudly across the hall with a group of other children.

A smile appeared on her lips. The rare sight, caused the girl in the same room as her stare in awe before realising she was looking at the most disliked girl in the entire orphanage and left the room quickly.

An eight year old with doll like features. An eight year old that looked so beautiful that even adults cannot help but stare in awe. With such a face, orphaned children had no way to compete against her.

"A Summer heat wave?" She rhetorically asked as she looked out the windowsill where the glaring sun shined across the suburban landscape.

Three days later, the weatherman reported that today would be the hottest day undoubtably and asked all residents to stay safe and hydrated.

The local zoo fed frozen treats to their animals. Local swimming pools attracted families in droves. Beaches was filled with people waiting to catch a good Summer tan. Ice cream shops prepared the best day of their business and cones of ice creams would melt in minutes under the frightening warm sun.

Meanwhile. A certain eight year old had secretly packed a backpack and hid it in one of the many tall shrubs by the church.

She used the past three days to volunteer herself for errands in the kitchen and garden. And her efforts had not gone to waste. She found what needed to find and made her final preparations in the kitchens when she helped out with cleaning.

That night. She snuck out from her bed and headed outside the hallways and into the old church. Today was a Friday Night and the nuns would all play a round of poker with the pastor in the pastor's office upstairs. They would all play to the morning whilst drinking merrily. She had timed it perfectly when she tied the door knob with a rope and made a dead knot around the base of a pillar. Everyone from management was inside. Due to the inverted door opening. The people inside would not be able to pull the door to leave. Just as she made sure everything was perfect, she heard them talk about something strange.

"Selling those children into families are minuscule, compared to supplying them to the mafia. The profits alone can let us all expand our operation in the next suburb."

"If that little boy wasn't taken in by that rich family, he would've filled our monthly quota to higher ups."

"Ha. Don't you know who those couple are? The man himself is a high court judge. And his wife is a famous humanitarian barrister. The N-country's case regarding human trafficking in orphanages was won thanks to her."

"Since when did you consider such things?"

"Ha. Didn't you see the way our pastor looked at her when she left? Of course he would do his research."

"Enough. We need to still fill in the quota this month. The guys above said that they want ethnics."

"How about that Asian girl that just came back?"

The person in question heard enough and headed downstairs walked towards the two gas tanks just outside the church doors.

'How can there be such a hellish place on earth be disguised as the house of god's children? Torturing us. Killing us. Selling us. If such people claim to be holy, then I would rather enter the eighteen levels of hell.' She decisively thought to herself as she opened the valves in the two gas tanks.

She walked a distance away to grab her match and lit it. In her eyes, the tiny lit match resembled the anger in the pit of her stomach. She tossed the match towards the gas tanks and watch as it blew up. She immediately walked to the side door and did the same thing with the third tank before running out the gates and quickly hid in the shrubs next to the orphanage as children slowly woke up to the sight and smell of burning fire. Everyone from the children to the entire neighbourhood woke up to the raging fire eating the old church. It wasn't until someone in the neighbourhood had the rationality to call for emergency services immediately, then perhaps the entire neighbourhood would watch as the church fell apart in a sea of flames.

Everyone in neighbourhood waited for the fire brigade to come. The sound of crackling fire drowned out their voices. The waves of heat blowing onto their skin, made people distance themselves in cold sweat. Everyone just simply watched as the fire engulfed the church in this dry and hot summer night.

By the fire brigade came, the top of the building had collapsed.

"Where are the nuns and the pastor?" A lady loudly exclaimed.

"Inside-The adults are inside!" A child cried out.

Everyone realised at that moment that all the adults indeed weren't outside with the children. Worry for the nuns and pastor of their neighbourhood grew and immediately asked the fire brigade and prayed for the safety of the people inside.

Meanwhile. Amongst such chaos. A certain eight year old walked away from the blazing scene.
