Chapter 6 - The Unwanted Burden

On a bright and promising Saturday, a decision was made, one that would forever alter the course of our lives. With just a single class to attend that day, I found myself with ample free time and an overwhelming desire to be near her. After my class concluded, I made my way to her place, eager to bridge the distance that had grown between us.

As was our custom, I dialed her number as I neared her house, and she soon appeared, her presence a welcome balm to my restless heart. We ventured to our usual hangout spot, a place where conversations flowed freely and secrets were shared without hesitation.

Within minutes, her heart began to unfurl before me. She disclosed a life-altering revelation—her father had remarried. The new family dynamic had thrown her into a bewildering world of uncertainty and change. With each word, it became evident that she was struggling to comprehend and adapt to this unforeseen shift in her life.

But there was more to the story, an explanation for her previous actions that had left me bewildered and hurt. She confided that on that fateful Saturday, she had been influenced by her own family. It was her sister, the very same sister who had once played matchmaker for us, who had sown the seeds of doubt about me.

This sister of hers had a connection to my workplace through a common friend, and my name had crossed their conversations. Sadly, the impression painted of me was far from favorable. The consensus, it seemed, was that I was a man of few words, unliked by most in the office. This unfavorable portrayal led her to conclude that I was unsuitable for her.

I tried to dispel these misconceptions, explaining that my introverted nature had led to these skewed perceptions, ones that did not accurately reflect my true self. As she poured out her heart, she shared yet another heart-wrenching chapter of her life story. She was the third child in her family, born after two daughters. Her birth had not brought the joy and celebration one might expect. Instead, her father had yearned for a son and, upon seeing her for the first time, turned his back, as if she were an unwanted burden.

The depths of her pain were evident as she recounted these painful memories. It was a story that resonated with me, reminding me of the poignant telefilms that had once graced the screens of Nepal television. I was both astonished and angered by her father's callousness. How could a parent turn away from their own flesh and blood in such a heartless manner?

As she shared her tale, the bond between us grew stronger, a shared understanding of the scars that life could inflict. It was in that moment that I realized the power of empathy and the strength of our connection, one that could overcome the hurdles life had placed before us.
