(Cora's POV)
By the time I get home, the sky became dark, swarming with glittering stars. I unlock door feeling slightly nauseous , as I walk through the door I'm greeted by a housemaid.
Lucy: 'Good evening, lady Cora. Your uncle is in the dining room if you're looking for him.'
Lucy: 'Since i didn't know if you had already eaten or not, i took the liberty of leaving part of the supper for you.' She said kindly.
Cora: 'Thank you, Lucy. That's very kind of you.' I say appreciatively.
Lucy: 'You may call me if you need anything else, milady.' She replies as she bows her head respectfully, then heads towards the kitchen.
As i make my way to the dining room, i see my uncle sitting on a chair, smoking with his old-fashioned pipe as he reads a book.
I smile, watching how clam and peaceful he is for a few seconds, then head up to him saying:
Cora: 'Uncle, I've finally come home!'
I watch as he tears his dark brown eyes away from the page and see how his face lights up within minutes of seeing me.
Uncle: 'My dear Cora, here you are!' He says enthusiastically.
Uncle: 'Coming home at this hour, i can imagine you must be famished!' He says worried as he crunches up his nose.
Cora: 'Don't worry uncle, I'm fine. I still have a lot of work to do, so I'm afraid i can't keep you company for tonight.' I say apologetically.
Uncle: 'Oh, it's alright, my dear. I'll not bother you for much longer then. Just don't overwork yourself too much, will you?' He adds with a concerned smile.
Cora: 'Not overwork myself? Has that ever happened?' I say jokingly as i start to head up the stairs.
Uncle: 'Haha! Not even on your day off! Have a good night nonetheless, my niece.' He says sweetly as he returns his attention back to his book.
Cora: 'Goodnight!' I add, quickly climbing up the stairs.
As walk down the hall i cant help but think; Uncle has always been so kind to me. Ever since i came here, he always treated me like his own daughter. I stop in front of a old black and white picture of a man and a women, and stare.
He treats me like his own daughter.... more than THEY ever did. I walk to the door, hand gripping the knob, entering my room and shutting the door behind me.
Cora: '*Sigh*, Even more so after they passed away....'
I shake my head trying to get rid of these time consuming thoughts.
Cora: 'I should focus, there's quite a lot to do.' I say as i flick on my desk lamp and sit on my chair. While i tie my hair up, i notice the newspaper Kim got for me from earlier. Suddenly, overpowering thoughts flood my mind.
I cant believe it's been Ten years. Ten years and i.... i moved on?
I pick the newspaper up and hold it up in front of me.
Who am i trying to fool?
With anger and frustration i throw the newspaper towards the side of me, as it hits a box near the bookshelf.
I avert my gaze to the paperwork on my desk.
Cora: 'Alright, time to get this paperwork done.' I say as i reach for a pen.
*Dring Dring, Dring Dring*
The telephone abruptly rings out of nowhere, surprising me. I quickly pick it up answering with a cool voice.
Cora: 'Hello? Officer Coleman on the phone.'
Cora: 'What? An emergency? 'I say in confusion as the person fills me in on the details.
Cora: 'Is it an assassination again?' I add as the other person on the phone confirms it true.
Cora: '45 Whither-river street. I see..... alright.... I'll be there in ten minutes.' I say ending the call hurrying to change into my police uniform, put on my badge and make sure my guns are firmly secured in the holsters.
I put on my white mask which is apart of the uniform and head out the door, disregarding all the failed evidence and data relating to their deaths that i had been working on for years... it shouldn't matter to me anymore. i say to myself as i clear my head and start the car.
Ten years and i.... still couldn't do anything for you.... for own parents.
