Chereads / Infection: Dying Days / Chapter 7 - Gym

Chapter 7 - Gym

"Zzz."

"She's fast asleep."

I said to nobody in particular as I stretched my hand towards Sara who was sound asleep and slowly stroked her hair.

"Sigh."

Seeing her defenseless face, I can't help but release a tired sigh.

It's funny how only a few hours ago, everybody was laughing and joking with their friends, without a care in the world.

But now look at us, we're hiding in a gym that's surrounded by former friends who want to eat our flesh.

"Sigh, I never expected my day to turn out like this."

"Eh? Is that you David? Sara's here too!"

"Sara? Thank God she's alive!"

"Huh?"

Hearing a couple of familiar voices behind me, I turn my body to face them. When I saw who they were, I got up from the cot and said with sincerity.

"It's great you guys were able to survive. Hunter, Megan."

"Un, you too."

"We were worried about you guys."

These two people in front of me were mine and Sara's friends.

Hunter Chavis is a teammate on the football team who plays as a wide receiver. He's a trustworthy and decent guy.

The other person is his girlfriend, Megan Porter. She is Sara's partner in cooking class and math class. She's a cheerful girl who has a lot in common with Sara. Well, that's what Sara told me. She and her are best friends.

We talked a little bit about what happened today before Hunter and Megan decided to back to their own resting area.

"...Is there anyone else from the football here?"

But before they left, I got up and grabbed Hunter to ask this question full well knowing what the answer most likely is.

With eyes full of sadness, Hunter managed to barely squeeze out his words.

"...Jeff, Bill, Arnold and Tyrese were attacked and e-eaten by those things outside. As for Danny, Phillip, Javier and the rest of the team, I don't know. I tried calling them and texting them but they're not answering. The only people that managed to make here are you, me, and Garrett."

"..."

Hearing his words, I gnashed my teeth and tried to hold back my tears.

Jeff, Bill, Tyrese and Arnold...I just can't believe they died so easily!

Wait.

" Did you say Garrett was also here?"

When I asked this, I saw Hunter subtly tremble.

...Something happened.

"Hunter, answer me this question."

"W-what is it?"

"It doesn't have to be in words. A simple nod or shake would suffice."

With a deep breath, I asked the question.

"Garrett was the cause wasn't he?"

The cause of Jeff's and the others death.

"..."

Understanding my underlying intention, Hunter shows a face of hesitation.

After a momentary silence.

*Nod*

Hunter finally nods his head.

"You sure?"

*Nod*

"...Okay, sorry to have kept you."

Although, I wanted to ask him for more details, I let Hunter leave. I'm sure he doesn't want to talk about what happened right now. I'll ask again after things calmed down.

"Now where's Garrett?"

I slowly move my gaze over the other survivors until I found him.

"That son of a bitch!"

He was discussing something with a few teachers along with another girl student like he did nothing wrong, like he's innocent.

However, I know full well what Garrett Wendly's true personality is. I was able to catch glimpses of  it after we lost a couple of games.

If I had to describe him, it would be a two-faced snake. He may act nice and friendly on the outside but he's actually a stuck up bastard on the inside. He's the type that forces his faults on others and hold grudges over petty stuff.

Me and a few of my teammates called him out on it and wanted him to be kicked off the team but we failed. He's Soaring Pelicans, our football team, best quarterback.

As much as I hate to admit it. Without him and his amazing throwing skills, we wouldn't have gotten first place in the state championship, But that doesn't give him the right to do what he did!

No friend should ever sacrifice his friends like that. Wait, did he even consider me and the others as friends?

"..."

Seeing him acting like nothings happened pisses me off! I'm going to kick his ass!

"Hey, are you David?"

Just when I was going over to fight Garrett, another voice calls out to me. When I looked to see who it was, my eyes widened in amazement. I know this person, Desmond told me about him, I believe his name was Andy.

Putting away my anger for the time being, I gave and a friendly nod before scanning Andy up and down.

Skeptically, I said.

"Are you okay?"

"I'm perfectly fine why'd you asked?"

"Because your uniform is splattered with blood."

I pointed towards his uniform that had blood splattered all over it. He had more on his hands, it's like he dipped his hands in red paint before trying to wash it off.

"Huh? Oh your talking about this? Don't worry about it. It came from the infected outside."

Andy said as he waved his left hand, signifying it wasn't anything to worry about.

"Anyways, is Desmond here? I've got something to talk to him about."

Andy asked while looking around the area.

"No, he's not here. He's still in the school."

"In the school?! Why's he still in there?"

"It's because he heard a cry for help. Plus he had to run half the length of a football field that's covered with infected in ten seconds otherwise the door to the gym would be closed."

"What bastard said such a thing?"

Andy said angrily. I understand how he feels. Me and Sara are quite worried for Desmond.

Who knows how many infected out there right now.

"Sigh, there's no use worrying about it now. I'm sure Desmond will be alright. He's experienced in stuff like after all. Well, that's if you count games."

"Yeah, maybe you're right. But it still doesn't change the fact I'm still worried about him."

"That makes the both of us. Hey, I got an idea."

"What is it?"

"Let's be friends. You're childhood friends with Desmond who's my friend therefore that makes you a friend of mine. So how about it? Wanna be friends?"

"I don't see why not."

"Then that's that then. How about we wait until Desmond gets back?"

"Sure thing. I bet he's on his way right now."

With that, Andy and I waited for Desmond's return.
