Chereads / Infection: Dying Days / Chapter 5 - The Plan

Chapter 5 - The Plan

In front of the door that was previously barricaded, me, David and Sara stood with our weapons ready.

I had the multi purpose shovel, David's got the plumbing wrench, and Sara's got the adjustable wrench.

"Okay, are you guys ready?"

Nervously, I asked David and Sara.

"Yeah, we're ready but are you sure this'll work?"

Skeptical, David asked as he gripped the plumbing wrench tighter. Well, I can understand why he's a little skeptical, even I don't know if this plan will work or not.

But of course I won't let my doubt show, so with a nod, I said win self confidence,

"I'm sure this will work. Besides, this is only the safest part, it's what comes after that'll make or break us. We can only believe in this."

I pat the canister in my pants pocket.

It's a almost empty air horn with a piece of tape stuck to the side of it. It's a vital part of our plan.

'Throw the air horn in the opposite direction of the gym, sneak pass the infected, and enter the gym, simple as that.'

Was what I came up with.

However, just because it sounds simple doesn't mean that it's easy.

Anyone of those infected out there are many times stronger than the average human, either one of us get caught by one of them and it'll be a hassle trying to get away.

What we're doing right now is all up to luck.

"We'll go on one. Ready?"

"I'm ready."

"Me too."

Hearing those two, I raise three of my fingers and do a countdown.

"Three…"

I drop the first finger.

"Two…"

Then the second.

"One…go!"

Using that as a signal, we cautiously walk towards the end of the hallway. David in the front, me in the back and Sara in the middle.

"Careful. In front of us."

When we got close to the corner of the hallway, four infected emerge.

"Try to kill them with a hit to the heads! That's their weak spot."

I said as I readied my shovel to swing at infected the moment we got near.

"Aaah!"

SMASH!

With a powerful swing, David hits an infected in the head and sends it flying towards the wall and hit it with a thud.

Damn good hit!

The same went for Sara and me as well. We hit two other infected and got them out the way.

"Aaah!"

SMASH!

"Let's keep going. Stay cautious."

David said as he finished off the last of the four infected and went around the corner.

"Alright."

Sara said as she followed in behind him.

"..."

Hearing the adoration in her voice, I felt bitter and jealous. If I'd confessed to her a little bit earlier, would that be me?

This thought flowed through my mind as I followed in behind those two.

I could've brought up what happened two weeks when we was in the workshop but I didn't want our relationship to be even more awkward than what it already is.

Because like I said before, If it wasn't for what's happening right now, I wouldn't even be near them, much less talk to them.

"Sigh, suppose that's life for you."

"What'd you say Desmond?"

"Nothing. I was just thinking about what to do after we get into the gym."

I made up an excuse and said to Sara who was looking back at me.

"Is that so?"

"Yeah."

"... Okay."

Sara said as she snuck a glance at my left hand before turning back around.

What was that about?

=======

"Fuck!"

"Damn, that's a lot of them."

"If any one of us get caught by one of them we're dead."

Us three cursed as we peered out the exit doors window, staring at the scene in front of us.

Standing in between us and the gym building were a horde of infected numbering possibly around thirty, which is a number three teenagers can't handle.

...If we didn't have a distraction of course.

"You guys better do some stretches. I can't have you guys cramping up on me."

Taking the air horn from my pocket, I jokingly say to the two to ease the mood.

"Shouldn't I be saying that to you? I'm on the football team and Sara's a star track runner, a distance this far won't cause any problems."

Understanding my intent, David makes a smart remark with a smirk.

"You don't have to worry about me, I've been playing paintball wearing a thirty pound vest so I won't tire that easily."

I said boastfully.

Years playing an extreme version of paintball allowed me to have better stamina than the average person, I'm on par with star athletes like Sara and David.

"I need get a little bit closer to throw it."

Pushing the door slowly so it don't make any noise, I move near the infected horde.

"Aaah!"

"Aaah!"

BADUMP! BADUMP! BADUMP!

Hearing the ghastly moans of the infected as I moved closer to the horde, the faster my heart started to beat.

Is it because of fear or is it because of adrenaline? Maybe it's both?

When I got within a safe distance of the horde...

"Run!"

"Let's go Sara!"

"Okay!"

I shouted at Sara and David to run while I simultaneously press the spray button on the air horn, causing a loud noise to be produced.

"Aaah!"

"Aaah!"

And as expected, this drawn the massive horde of flesh eating monsters over towards my way.

….Yeah, my heart is definitely throbbing from fear, not excitement.

Using the tape that was attached to the side of the air horn, I tape down the button. Now, I don't need to have to constantly keep pressure on the button to make noise.

"Follow the sound. Follow the sound."

I tauntingly said as I throw the air horn in the opposite direction of the gym, which was in the west. The infected, like a moth attracted to a flame, staggeredly followed the sound.

Did those two make it to the gym yet? That air horn only has about two minutes left of air in it.

"Desmond! We made it!"

Almost like he's reading my mind, David yells.

Turning my head their way, I see them standing in the entrance of the gym's side door, behind them, I could see a few of the surviving students. They were watching the infected with eyes full of fear.

"They said they'll only have the door open for ten seconds! You have to hurry!"

"Wha- fucking ten seconds? Do you know how far it is from here to there?"

I cursed. It's a little more than half a football field from here to the gym. Shit, although I have star athlete level stamina, I don't have the speed of one.

Not to mention, I can hear the air horn sound slowly diminishing.

"I guess it's time to tap into my inner Usain Bolt."

"Kyaah! Help!"

"Huh?"

And just when I made up my mind to run like my life depended on it (literally), I heard a cry for help.

Snapping my head back towards the school building, I spot a girl on the second floor hallway being closed in on by four infected, two behind her, two in front of her.

Should I save her? I mean, I only have thirty seconds to run half a football field.

"P-pease, somebody help me!"

As I was hesitating, the girl said with a shaky and tearful voice.

"You're not giving me any other choice!"

Breaking me from my hesitation, I run back towards the school building. She's lucky I don't want to see another classmate turned into one of the infected.

Sigh, doing stuff like this is going to be the death of me one day, I tell you.

"Eh? Desmond?"

"Desmond where you going?"

Stunned at my sudden action, David and Sara asks stupefied. However, I didn't have time to answer back.

Time is of the essence!
