CHAPTER THREE
A wave of enthusiasm passed through the students as everyone was excited to know the new functionaries.
"Onudugo Judith is the main restroom prefect, Chukwu Christophine the main canteen prefect, Williams Joy the main sports prefect, Anene Chidimma the main assembly prefect, Udeani Henrieth the main labour prefect, Udeh Maryann the main academic prefect, Eneh Lucy the main senior prefect. The rest of the ss2 students should move to the notice board after this assembly to see which school function was assigned to them."
Just like I said earlier my name was called as a main functionary, but as an academic prefect? I couldn't imagine that my dad had so much influence to make ME the girl that always came 20th in a class of 24 to be an academic prefect. Truly, anything can happen under the sun.
"Quiet girls, you are not market women" cautioned the principal.
"Now that you all know who your prefects are, I expect respect from you to them and from them to me. To the ss2 student, make sure your tenure as functionaries leave a positive impact on the students and the school as whole. Do you understand me?"
"Yes we do ma" the ss2 students replied.
"Good, now you all should quietly walk to your classes and collect your results from your Form mistresses. Have a nice vacation and a good day" she concluded.
"Thank you ma" we all responded. After the principal left the podium Chioma hugged Henrieth and me.
"Congratulations!! She shrieked
"For what?" I frowned
"Duh! For getting a post, a main prefect at that"
"Ok, but it's not like it's an amazing thing"
"Speak for yourself girl, its amazing to me. And thank you Chioma" Henrieth appreciated
"Maryann"
"Chioma"
"Henrieth"
"And they are here" I muttered
"Hello girls, where have you been" Chioma asked.
"Lemme guess, acting as assembly prefects" Henrieth guessed.
"Yup you guessed right" answered a smiling Sarah.
"You should pray you are one of the assisting functionaries because you names wasn't called out here" I cautioned Sarah
"Pray keh! I will do no such thing. If they decide to make me a functionary, fine, if not am good with it. After all I have had my share of bullying and bossing junior students around" replied Sarah. We all chuckled at her words.
"By the way, Lucy, you are the senior prefect" informed Chioma.
"I heard" came Lucy's reply. Lucy was not one to express her emotions but I could tell that she was happy.
"Juliet I thought you weren't coming to school today" I inquired.
"I thought so too my sister, but my mum decided I shouldn't go to the market with her today" replied Juliet
"Oya let us go and check if we were assigned any functions, main functionaries please lead the way" joked Chioma. The girls all burst into laughter while I rolled my eyes. We walked to the notice board and checked their names. Juliet was assisting me as the academic prefect. I guessed as much since she was the most intelligent of us all. I was certain she wasn't given the main academic prefect because her parents weren't rich. She was a scholarship student whose benefactor was infact my rich dad if I might add. Unfortunately or rather fortunately for Sarah she wasn't given a post. And Chioma the fashionista and talkative of us all got the post of the assistant restroom prefect. She was sad and we sympathized with her but I was more concerned with what her parents would say as they were as influential as my dad.
After congratulating ourselves we went to our class to collect our results. Surprisingly, I took the 19th position, Lucy came 20th, Sarah came 21st, Henrieth came 22nd and the 23rd position was taken Chioma. The 24th position was taken by a girl who was sick half the term and didn't take any of her exams, so you could say that we all retained our positions. Oh I forgot to tell you, Juliet came first, please don't ask me how she still goes out with us. It was still 10am and I dint want to go home to an empty house so I asked
"Hey girls, who wants to hangout"
"Me" four hands were raised in the air.
"Juliet you don't want to hangout?" asked Lucy
"I still want to help my mum in the market today since it's not evening yet. You girls should have fun and keep my share of the goodies"
"Alright no problem" came Lucy's reply
"I didn't promise anything ooh" added Sarah
"Don't mind them, I will personally keep you share" I assured her.
"Thank you" she replied. "Maryann, please don't forget that today is Friday and we have to attend the legion of Mary society by 4pm" she reminded as she took her leave. Darn!!! Why must this girl bring up church when am trying hard to forget what my father's reaction would be over my result.
"So whose house are we headed to" I quickly asked pretending not to have heard her. Everybody knew how much I detested going to church.
