Chapter 39 - 36. TEMPER

Leseli felt like she was sitting on pins. First, the curiosity for her being summoned here was eating her up, second, the woman before her, although amazingly beautiful seemed to be scrutinizing her.

She never liked the high class ladies to begin with, let alone being looked down upon. She felt that even in her chosen career path, there still were those who chose the profession merely for status.

Lost?

Heck yah. Our girl's mind always floats to something else whenever she is in an unentertaining circumstance.

Benita was a little upset. The girl, although looking at her seemed to not see her. It was as if whatever was in her mind was more appreciative.

She frowned slightly but quickly pushed those thoughts aside.

"So how can I pronounce your surname? It's tricky for us since it's a totally new dialect." Benita said to the girl.

She smiled politely, her clear light brown eyes looked directly at Benita. "please call me Les. I am afraid even if I tell you how to pronounce my surname, it still will be difficult."

So she was an observant one, Benita thought.

"So Les, where are you from?"

"Lesotho professor."

"If I may ask, where is that? Seeing you, I almost thought you were from South Africa."

There goes that stupid question again. Les thought. However, on her face she displayed a gentle smile:

"Lesotho is in southern Africa. It is landlocked by South Africa."

Benita smiled apologetically. She could figure from her English that she was not from South Africa. Well not to say there is a vast difference between the two countries. They were mostly black for heaven's sake!

Yet somehow, her manner of approach, body language and manner of replying questions were more... ummm!! English!

Whoa! That thought was uncalled for. Benita found herself giggling at the though and only stopped when the girl was looking at her as if she was a lab rat.

Urgh …

"Professor, if I may ask, why did you call me? I believe it wasn't to ask about my country since that is contained in my school file."

How curt! Benita thought. But because she was a sophisticated woman with a touch of elegance, she did not get annoyed by the girl.

"Les I found a report here from the chief of police about how you helped them on a case."

Benita studied the girl's expression carefully. Nothing changed, almost as if she was unaffected by what she said. It was more like she was waiting for her to proceed.

"... so I would like to ask. You are a student doctor; how did you do what you did?"

For some time, Les felt at loss. Wasn't this lady before her more reasonable to be in a position. How could she ask such a question?

"I am sorry professor; I don't understand what you mean."

It was then that the professor realised that she had let her curiosity get the best of her, much that she almost forgot her mission.

"Ok Les, let me stop beating about the bush and hit the nail. The chief of police has expressed his desire and interest for you to work with our police service. Don't worry about your career, they are also in need of a police doctor."

She spoke slowly to make sure Les clearly understood her. Well she had to sell this right? So she had to sound a bit convincing.

"And Les, take this as an opportunity as they can even double the salary they pay, and can offer better conditions than those of your country, you can even be given full citizenship."

Glamorous, right?

"I am sorry professor. Like I expressed myself to the chief when he stated this, I, to this moment, kindly decline the offer. You see, it is not about better opportunities that I will definitely have here, it's about the reason I pursued this course in the first place."

With that being said, she stood up, bowed slightly with if I may be excused, she turned on her heels and left.

Benita was very furious. Her audacity! How can a nobody like that girl talk to her like that? She had to take action!
