After a long shower, Su Lin, being the carnivore that she was, went straight for the steak in the fridge and pan-fried it with some basic spices.
She then sat down by herself on an empty table and chowed down her dinner. Su Lin didn't mind being alone. She was already used to the feeling.
But she didn't plan on being alone for much longer.
Su Lin might not have the power to get revenge for her body's previous owner just yet, but she wanted to reach out to her good friend.
Because of mama Meng's and Tang Yue's incessant pressure, the previous Su Lin, unfortunately, felt compelled to break ties with her one and only best friend, whom she had known almost for her entire life from a young age.
It actually ended up being one of the main reasons for her suicide.
Sometimes even when someone was at rock bottom, a phone call to a friend is all that is required to cheer them back up.
But mama Meng and Tang Yue didn't even have the kindness to let Su Lin have this simple joy in her miserable life.
They constantly chided her about how she embarrassed them by talking to low-class people and forced her to break up with her friend.
So the current Su Lin decided to rectify things. When one can't appease the dead, one might as well appease the living.
She took out her phone and sent the friend a text message, with a picture of her dinner.
Li Runyan was a normal middle management employee in a shopping complex. She once belonged to a prestigious family but was ostracised because of certain unfortunate incidents.
So now, she could only do these random odd jobs and somehow survive in the city.
And even though, it was already 7 pm and the sky outside had darkened, Runyan was as usual still working on her desk.
Her manager was a pain in the behind and she took advantage of Runyan's meek submissive nature to dole out extra chunks of work at absolutely no overtime costs.
Runyan as well gritted her teeth and bore with it, since she was afraid of losing her job.
This was the plight of most people who lived paycheck to paycheck. They were typically taken advantage of and subjected to unfair working conditions.
Runyan took out her phone to plug her earphones in and listen to some music while finishing up her inventory chore when suddenly an unexpected message flashed on her phone.
A familiar number had sent her a picture of a steak dinner and an attached phrase.
"My plate looks lonely without you."
How cheesy?! Runyan covered her mouth to hide her laughter as tears began spilling from her eyes.
She hadn't heard from Su Lin for so long, that she was worried to death. But she didn't dare to call her, afraid that Su Lin's mother-in-law might scold her if she did.
She didn't want to bring her friend any more trouble than she already had.
One time Su Lin's mother-in-law had slapped Su Lin in public and reprimanded her horribly because Runyan spilled a drink on her by mistake.
Why her drink suddenly spilled and who pushed her from behind was an entirely different story, but the end result was Su Lin getting slapped so hard that her cheeks turned red and even displayed a hand imprint.
Runyan quickly put down the notepad in her hands and called Su Lin.
Just like everybody in the city, she as well knew that Su Lin had gotten a divorce and had patiently waited for her friend to contact her.
And today, she finally did!
"Hello. Hello. Lin Lin. How are you doing? How is your health?" Runyan's panicked voice sounded through the phone.
And on the other side of the phone, Su Lin revealed a gentle smile as she sweetly answered.
"I am doing good, Yan Yan. I will message you my address. Can you come over today after work? I have some things to discuss with you in person."
Runyan wiped her tears and nodded. "Yes. Yes. Of course. I will meet you." She was so happy that she finally managed to talk to her best friend.
Su Lin's address was not on the main bus route. So Runyan hurriedly searched her bag to make sure she had enough cab fees.
No matter what, she decided to meet with her friend today. Only she knew how much Su Lin was suffering in that hell all alone and with a terminal illness no less.
She was happy that Su Lin had finally gotten out of that toxic marriage and that horrible family.
Runyan then quickly got back to work so that she can finish it and leave early.
