Pang Degong, always the most candid, chuckled softly. "You've always been confident, perhaps overly so at times. But confidence alone will not see you through this test. The questions are designed to challenge even the sharpest minds."
Zhuge Liang had met their gazes evenly, his tone steady and assured. "Masters, I understand the weight of this decision, but I am ready. The chaos in the land demands action, and I cannot remain here in comfort while the world cries out for order. I am confident in my ability and comprehension to tackle the challenges before me."
His words had silenced any lingering doubts, the fire in his eyes convincing even the skeptical Sima Hui. And so, the test had begun.
For hours, Zhuge Liang worked tirelessly, his quill gliding across parchment with precision. Each question demanded not only technical knowledge but also creativity and foresight.
One scroll presented a complex scenario, an army twice the size of his own besieging a fortress with limited supplies. The problem required a detailed plan for countering the siege, minimizing losses, and turning the tide of the battle.
Zhuge Liang's response was a masterpiece of strategy, employing deception, psychological warfare, and efficient resource allocation to achieve victory.
Another scroll delved into governance, posing a question about managing a region suffering from famine and unrest. Zhuge Liang outlined a comprehensive plan that balanced immediate relief efforts with long-term agricultural reforms, integrating local leadership to ensure stability.
Mathematics posed its own challenges, with intricate problems involving trade calculations and resource distribution. Zhuge Liang's mind, as sharp as ever, worked through each problem methodically, his answers reflecting a deep understanding of economic principles.
Sima Hui, Huang Chengyan, and Pang Degong observed in silence, occasionally exchanging glances as Zhuge Liang tackled each section, paper after paper and scroll after scroll was slowly being filled by Zhuge Liang.
"His grasp of strategy is unparalleled," remarked Sima Hui, nodding approvingly as he reviewed one of Zhuge Liang's completed answers.
Huang Chengyan smiled faintly. "And his vision for governance is both practical and compassionate. He understands that leadership is not just about power, but about service."
Pang Degong leaned back, a twinkle of amusement in his eyes. "He's certainly proving us wrong, isn't he? I didn't think he'd be able to maintain this level of focus across so many disciplines."
As the sun began its descent, casting golden hues across the room, Zhuge Liang reached the final scroll. This question was different, a philosophical challenge rather than a practical one. It asked, what is the essence of leadership in a time of chaos?
Zhuge Liang paused, his quill hovering over the parchment. He closed his eyes, drawing upon years of study, reflection, and observation. When he began to write, his words flowed with clarity and conviction.
"The essence of leadership lies not in dominion over others but in the ability to inspire unity and purpose. A true leader is a servant to the people, guiding them with wisdom, courage, and integrity. In times of chaos, a leader must be the calm amidst the storm, the light that illuminates the path forward. It is not enough to wield power; one must wield it justly, always mindful of the greater good."
When he finished, Zhuge Liang set down his quill and leaned back, a sense of quiet satisfaction washing over him as he had finally finished all of the test papers and scrolls.
His three masters took their time reviewing his answers, their faces inscrutable. Zhuge Liang waited patiently, his confidence tempered by humility. Finally, Sima Hui stood, clearing his throat.
"Kongming, your answers have exceeded our expectations. Your strategies are brilliant, your governance plans insightful, and your understanding of leadership profound. You have passed." Huang Chengyan and Pang Degong nodded in agreement, their expressions warm with pride.
Zhuge Liang exhaled deeply, the weight of the examination lifting from his shoulders as Sima Hui declared his success. With quiet humility, he stood, cupping his hands and bowing low to his three masters, a gesture of profound respect and gratitude.
"Masters, I am deeply thankful for your guidance, patience, and wisdom," Zhuge Liang said, his voice steady yet tinged with emotion. "Your teachings have shaped me and prepared me for the challenges ahead. I will carry your lessons in my heart as I step into the world."
The three masters exchanged glances, their expressions softened by pride. Sima Hui, ever the composed mentor, spoke first. "You have exceeded even our expectations, Kongming. Your diligence and insight set you apart. Now that you've completed your test with such distinction, when do you plan to leave the village and embark on the path you've chosen?"
Zhuge Liang straightened, his gaze firm. "I plan to leave in three months, when the year changes to a new year. However, it might be sooner. There are writings I wish to complete in this tranquil environment before venturing into the chaos of the outside world."
Huang Chengyan, startled by his response, leaned forward. "Three months? Why take the test now if you intend to stay a while longer Kongming?"
Zhuge Liang smiled faintly, the corner of his lips lifting in a familiar expression of calm confidence. "By completing the test now, I've reduced the preparation time needed before my journey. This allows me to focus on my final writings and reflections without distraction."
Huang Chengyan nodded thoughtfully, his initial surprise giving way to understanding. Pang Degong chuckled, his voice breaking the reflective silence. "Ah, Kongming, always several steps ahead. Your foresight will serve you well in the tumultuous world outside these mountains."
Meanwhile, outside the hut, two figures paced anxiously in the small garden. Pang Tong, his restless energy apparent, muttered under his breath. "How long can this test take? Kongming's brilliance aside, even he must find this exhausting."
Xu Shu, calmer in demeanor, glanced toward the closed door. "Patience, Shiyuan. This is not just any test, it's a culmination of all of the knowledge we learned under the three masters. It's only right that it demands time and effort."
Pang Tong stopped, huffing in frustration. "I know, but I can't help wondering how he's doing. He never shows it, but even Kongming must feel the pressure. I'd wager he aced it, though. He always does."
As if in answer to their musings, the sound of the door creaking open drew their attention. Both men turned sharply, their gazes fixed on the hut's entrance. Zhuge Liang emerged, his figure framed by the warm glow of the setting sun, followed closely by Sima Hui, Pang Degong, and Huang Chengyan.
Pang Tong and Xu Shu rushed forward, their voices overlapping. "Kongming! How did it go? Did you pass?"
Zhuge Liang opened his mouth to reply, but Pang Degong raised a hand, his amused tone cutting through the commotion. "He passed with flying colors, as expected. But don't think for a moment we'll divulge the contents of the test until you two take it yourselves."
Pang Tong groaned in mock despair. "Of course. We're doomed to curiosity until then."
Xu Shu, however, smiled warmly. "Congratulations, Kongming. Your success is well deserved."
Zhuge Liang inclined his head, his usual humility in full display. "Thank you, my friends. Your support has been invaluable."
That evening, the five of them gathered in the modest courtyard of the hut. The stars overhead twinkled brightly, their light reflected in the small pond nearby. Sima Hui poured tea for everyone, the aroma mingling with the cool night air.
"You've chosen to leave in three months," Huang Chengyan said, breaking the comfortable silence. "Do you know where you'll go first?"
Zhuge Liang sipped his tea thoughtfully before answering. "The situation in the land is volatile. Cao Cao's recent victories against Yuan Shao's attack have solidified his power, while Lie Fan's strategic maneuvers have brought much of the north under his control and make him the warlord who hold the largest domain. Liu Bei, though noble in intent, remains with a small base of power. I intend to observe and determine where I can be of the most use."
Pang Tong leaned forward, his expression curious. "And have you considered whom you might serve? With your talents, every warlord would vie for your allegiance."
Zhuge Liang's gaze turned contemplative. "Service is not a matter of ambition but of alignment with one's principles. I will offer my aid to the one whose vision aligns with the betterment of the people and my principle."
The group fell silent, the weight of his words sinking in. Xu Shu broke it with a quiet chuckle. "Typical Kongming. Always thinking of the greater good."
As the evening deepened, the soft glow of lanterns illuminated the modest courtyard. Zhuge Liang, Xu Shu, and Pang Tong took their leave from the three masters, their figures disappearing into the quiet night. Zhuge Liang walked with a calm yet contemplative stride, his mind already working through plans and possibilities for the journey that lay ahead.
Meanwhile, back in the hut, Sima Hui, Pang Degong, and Huang Chengyan remained seated, their conversation shifting naturally to the ever-changing political landscape of the land. Sima Hui poured more tea, his movements deliberate and steady.
"The demise of Yuan Shao at Lie Fan's hands," Sima Hui began, his voice calm but tinged with intrigue, "has shifted the balance of power in a way few could have anticipated. Yuan Shao's arrogance led to his downfall, but it is Lie Fan's strategy and discipline that have solidified his position as the most powerful force in the land."
Pang Degong nodded, stroking his beard thoughtfully. "Indeed. Lie Fan's domain now stretches farther than anyone else's, and his army is disciplined, well-equipped, and fiercely loyal. It is no small feat to command such a force while maintaining stability in his territories. Gongsun Gong's recent pledge of allegiance further cements his hold over the north. The man is as adept at diplomacy as he is at warfare."
Huang Chengyan, ever the realist, leaned forward, his expression serious. "Lie Fan may hold the largest domain, but he is not without challenges. His rapid expansion risks overextension. Managing such vast territories, especially those newly acquired, is no easy task. And then there is Cao Cao."
Sima Hui raised an eyebrow. "Cao Cao, the cunning one. He may not command as much territory as Lie Fan, but his strategic acumen is unmatched. His victory in defending Luoyang against Yuan Shao has bolstered his prestige, and his recent acquisition of Zhang Yan's former lands under Yuan Shao's rule previously had further strengthens his position. He remains a formidable contender."
Pang Degong chuckled softly. "A contest of ambition and strategy, is it not? Lie Fan and Cao Cao are like two tigers on a mountain, each waiting for the other to make a misstep. But there is another factor to consider, the other warlords. Sun Ce in the south is expanding steadily, and while Liu Bei's current power is modest, his reputation for righteousness could make him a wildcard."
