I keep watch at the border of this sector of the cave. It's freezing with only a small heat lamp to give us some warmth. It has been at least a few hours since we entered the cave with the Adsum fighters on our tail. I know they'll come looking for us since they need information from a live Novus military personnel. I think of the Adsum fighters I killed in the trees and I remember what I was told before I was deployed as a spy for Adsum. "Do whatever you can to gain their trust. Sacrifices will be made."
The word sacrifice multiplies in my head and I can't stop pondering it, but it's my duty and it's for the greater good apparently.
I feel a hand on my shoulder, "You hear that boy?" Sergeant Ashton, a serious stoic man in his 40s. There's an echo through the caves of men talking. They're getting close. I turn off the heat lamp and we both ready our guns as their footstep and chatter grow louder.
Boom! A flash explosion that we set up activates and that's when we attack. We manage to get three down but the last one starts running. I chase him down and tackle him to the floor. We both throw some punches at each other but my strength has the upper hand and I manage to pin him down and grab the knife from my boot. I look him regretfully in the eye and stab him in the chest a few times making sure he's dead.
The sergeant runs up from behind me "Good work, now let's find our way out of here."
