Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: Banes Confusion

Bane looked around in confusion, trying to process what happened. He didn't understand it. Her intense weird reaction, the way she shut down. He knew it had to do with her past life. He still found it unbelievable that this young kitsune had died twice, and for her it had probably happened within the same 10 minutes. He wanted to know more about her. And to be honest he knew he shouldn't have broke it to her like that. In her point of view she had dropped into this world yesterday, took in a lifetimes information about a world that was strange and probably immensely different from her own world. Hell, he had no idea if there even was such a thing as mates and destiny on her planet. Bain looked about restlessly "Where could she have gone?" he mumbled to himself. His mind now clearer after he had seen through his anger and confusion that had clouded his mind. He knew he had to try to explain to her. Make her understand what he meant when he said they were mates. He didn't know what she had thought they were, but in this world a mate was someone who tied their soul to yours. They were the other half of your soul, and anything that happened to them, you would feel too. If not the same intensity then even worse. Mates were inexplicably drawn to each other and had an affinity for one and other. They needed each other like a person needed their heart to beat or their lungs to breathe. 'ah, well.' Bain thought to himself. 'I decided to stay with her. To help her with all that I possibly could. That is what I'll do, and if she happens to fall in love with me, well that would be great for us both.' He discretely merged into shadows, moving through the city as swiftly as a hawk honing in on its prey. 'Ah little fox, I may not know where you are but I know where your home base is.' Bain smiled cheekily to himself, his fangs snaring on his bottom lip causing his rogue look to become devilish. Bain once again snuck into Avril's room, uninvited hoping to god Avril didn't hold grudges against him for breaking and entering twice in the same day. He settled down to wait for Avrils imminent return. Or so he hoped.

....3 hours later...

Bain restlessly paced back and forth. She should be here by now. What did that woman have to do that was so urgent she couldn't even come home before it was dark. The kitsune city outside Avrils window looked like a ghost town with its sparse gleaming lanterns that showered the city in an frosty blue light. That's when he saw her tiny silhouette gleaming in the cold lighting. She wandered slowly into the back ally lost in thought so it seemed. Bain sighed, knowing she was safe made him feel at ease. Settling down he watched her jump up, her nimble feet landed on the sill. She eased open the window slowly stepping into the room, her dainty fingers with their long pointed nails wrapping carefully around the side of the window. 'Ah how beautiful. To bad I still don't have a clue what to say to her.' his face pulled taught as Avril slowly looked up into her bedroom to see Bain. However to Bains surprise and dismay her golden eyes held steel within them as she looked up.

"Avril, I'm sorry for today. Please let me explain!" Bain came up to Avril, wrapping his arms around her thin waste. to his confusion she did not pull away from his embrace but she still felt like she was miles away from him. The coldness emanating from her caused his heart to hurt.

"Bain step back. I'm sorry, I want to be friends with you but I can't be what you want. Mates or not, it matters little to me. What matters is I am alive, and I have a second chance. Bain you don't understand. I have people now. People that love me. They need my protection. Now maybe I'm not the Beltane these parents birthed or the useless miss everyone has coddled in this life of hers. But now that I'm here, I will keep these people safe. I won't be useless in this world like in my previous life or in Beltane's previous life. I will make myself strong, I will build my power up, and become so powerful I can smash any who cross me. Dying pitifully like a broken rag-doll has shown me that others who hold more power than you will always hold your life in their hands. No matter your backing, no matter your pleading, they can throw you away like garbage the moment they see fit. I will not be victim to this a third time. " Avril looked up into Bains' red eyes, her eyes sparked with righteousness and that steely flint that he found cute.

"Avril, I don't think you understand. My little fox, I don't know how things worked in your previous world. But in this world mate is like a piece of yourself, a half that you've been missing your entire life. You won't be able to resist me Avril. The attraction will become painful the further away from me you become. And however much you hurt, I will feel it tenfold. Please, Avril I know there are things you don't want to share with me. I know your not ready to share some things with me. I know I sound insane to you probably. But still, I need you to try and trust me. We can help each other."

"No Bain. I just don't think I can do it. I'm not strong enough. And your crazy thinking we're mates. We have barely met each other. We're from completely different worlds for that matter."

"Avril, you know I'm right. Look at me. I can barely resist the urge to be around you. And you look pretty comfortable yourself in my arms." Avril looked down, blushing profusely at his comment. She tried to pull away, but to no avail. As much as she tried to pull away, Bains war hardened muscles wouldn't move. They were akin to the strongest rock or metal ever known to man. Unbending and unbreakable. Bains desire to pull her closer only rose as she struggled to move away from him. He noted to his satisfaction, Avrils struggles to escape seemed very minuscule. Almost as if she was faltering as to what she truly wanted.

"Bain I can't. Your too dangerous to my heart. I don't know enough of you. And even if I did, men are changeable. Easily swayed to a different side. Much like the moon, you wax and wane. Never in the same position twice. Today I'm irreplaceable, but tomorrow a different newer version of me with more connections and more to offer you. Then where will the irreplaceable love and feelings you have for me now go? Will your soul wrench when you throw me to the dogs. Will you hurt as I do when they tear me apart? I think not."

"That would never happen Avril. Please, I need you to give me an opportunity, a chance. That's all I'm asking for. You have a new life, why not give someone a chance to prove to you men can be different. We are not all so changeable and malleable to manipulation and desire. I can show you. I promise the moment I do something you hate, you can toss me away. I'll never come back to your side." Avril looked up at Bain with glossed over eyes, her fluffy ears flicking back and forth in indecision. Bain looked down at the tiny fragile fox in his arms, hoping against all hope that she would let him have a chance. Looking at her soft flowing white and black tipped hair Bain couldn't help but think about how she had turned his life upside down. He had come here to expand himself, maybe find a female he could bring home. Instead he had ran headfirst into a live-wire kitsune , and found his once-in-a-lifetime mate. Something a thousand dark elves wished for. Yearned for with every fiber of their being, but only a handful eve received in their lifetime. He, a cold heartless man who had never even dreamed of such luck and happiness, had it fall straight into his lap. How could he ever have asked for more? Now he never wanted to leave her side again, and he didn't plan to. He just didn't know if, or how he could make her stay willingly.
