Chapter 1 - Early Years of Nyz

Lux and Nyx Faux are twins, their mother named them after the time they were born. Lux, being born during at nearly noon, and Nyx being born at nearly midnight.

When Lux was born, she came without complications and smiled almost immediately and the room seemed to be filled with warmth. She really was the embodiment of light, she even had a tiny birthmark in the shape of the sun on her wrist. All the nurses who held and bathed her fell in love with her bright blue eyes and golden hair. She was only an hour old, but the nurses could already tell that she had a bright demeanor.

Nyx, however, took much longer to follow her sister into the world. She got tangled in the umbilical cord, scratched and ripped parts of their mother, and emerged pale and nearly dead with clumps of her sister's golden hair in her tiny fists. She had raven black hair that naturally fell over her forehead. Her birthmark was a crescent that covered her left eye, which was a pale icy blue. Her right eye was such a dark shade of brown it was almost black. Even after the doctors revived her from her near death, she still exuded a dark aura as if she had seen the other side and it wasn't pretty. The nurses bathed her quickly because the infant made them so uncomfortable, as if something was lurking and waiting for them.

Their parents loved them, from the moment they were born. Nyx's dark aura and pale skin resembled her father, it was as though she was a copy of him. Lux, however looked like her mother, only she was even warmer. Despite being exact opposites, they were inseparable… it was as though they both had ancient souls that knew each other from previous life times. They grew more and more curious as they grew older. Lux always brought in bright flowers and asked their mother what they were as she placed them in various cups. Nyx, however, brought in various dead things, or parts of them. She had a small collection of bones hidden in her room as her mother threw away any bones that were in plain sight.

Mrs. Faux thought Nyx was disturbed and possibly even insane. She watched the younger twin closely, waiting to see what she would do each day. She simply couldn't believe that such a child came from her, let alone was Lux's twin. Lux was her favorite, she was so sweet and warm. Why was Nyx so… dark? Mrs. Faux, the sheltered housewife, voiced her concerns to her husband.

Mr. Faux brushed her off saying, "perhaps she's  just showing an interest in the family businesses."

Mr. Faux, who was just as pale and "creepy" as Nyx, was a co-owner of a funeral parlour. He thought that Nyx was showing an early appreciation of death that he shares. His family was traditional and the family business was supposed to go to the next male heir. However, his brother is gay and unjustly has been disowned by the family, and his wife was unable to bear anymore children. In order to keep the business in the family, one of his daughters would have to inherit it, much to his grandfather's dismay. Nyx's fascination with death gave her father hope. Maybe she won't put up a fight over taking over the business.

The twins were still children though, nobody knew what they'd grow up to be. Nor did they know a great accident would cause a grief so terrible, the family wouldn't heal properly.
