Chereads / I Kill Monsters For A Living (On Hold) / Chapter 17 - Twelve Years Ago

Chapter 17 - Twelve Years Ago

It was a cold winter night, back when I was around 5 years old... It was raining that day...

-Twelve years ago-

My father had just gone out to buy some groceries about two hours ago. He'd usually be back by now but he was running late for some unknown reason. We lived in a fairly small house in a small town not so far away from Alinam. The town also had a bunch of parks and a farm not so close by.

"Mom, can I have swome spaghetti?!" I asked mother as I began to poke his mother in the back.

"Just wait, I'll make you some alphabet spaghetti." Alice then took out a can from the cabinet and began to open it with a can opener.

"No!"

"Huh? What do you mean no?"

"I want da rweal spaghetti! I'm all grown up now!" I then grinned and crossed my arms.

"And how old are you now?"

"I'm five!" I said with a big smile on my face.

"WOAH! That's a big number!"

"That's right! I'm a big number now!" I said with pride.

"Haha, I'll start cooking some spaghetti right now, it'll be done in a while... are you sure you're old enough for spaghetti?"

"YES! I CAN HANDLE IT!"

"Alrighty, I'll get the spaghetti ready."

"YAAAAAAAY!"

My mother giggled for a bit as she placed the pasta noodles in the pot. She then looked around the cabinet for a union but wasn't able to find one. "Could you do me a favor and pass mommy my phone? It's on the couch right now."

"Okay, mommy!" I then ran towards the couch and grabbed her phone. "I GOT IT!" I yelled as I held the phone up.

"NICE JOB!" She then gave me a thumbs up while a large smile as I lent the phone to her. "I'm just gonna call daddy, just watch tv while I'm on the phone."

"OKAY!" I then rushed towards the couch and began jumping on it as I turned on the TV.

Alice then dialed in the phone number and called Kevin, "Hey, Kevin, you were supposed to be here an hou-"

"We're sorry, you have reached a number that has been disconnected or is no longer in service." The phone replied. Alice sighed as she disconnected the call and tried again.

Alice then dialed in the phone number and tried again. again, "Kevin, co-"

"We're sorry, you have reache-"

"Woah mom, it's raining!" I said as I looked outside the window. I then spotted two plastic bags filled with groceries right next to our door.

"Man... I can't make spaghetti without unions..."

"Mom, there's groceries outside!" I said as I opened the front door.

"Owota! I told you not to open the front door by yourself!" Alice said as she went and picked me up at the door. She then spotted the two grocery bags laying in front of our doorstep and went to go pick them up. "Where's Kevin..." She said to herself as she closes the door and placed the groceries on the kitchen table.

"Mom, dad forgot his wallet in here..." I said as I picked up his wallet off the floor and handed it towards my mother.

"Mom, is dad okay?" I asked her with a sad tone in my voice.

"Dad is fine, he's just home really late." She said with a smile on her face.

"Mom, where's dad?" I said as I began to pull mom's shirt.

"We'll go find him." Mom then turned off the stove and picked me up. We then exited the house and closed the door behind us.

I think we looked around our area for almost an hour during that rainy night, checking every store and park close to our house.

"I don't know where he is..." Mother then began to think about where he could be. "I usually just take a sip of goat blood once every month." She had just remembered what Kevin told her that night.

Mother then began running towards the local farm nearby. "Please be okay Kevin..." She whispered to herself while running.

Mother then stopped running as we then arrived at the local farm. She took a while to catch her breath and began walking slowly after breaking in through the back fence. It was late at night so no one would notice us breaking in since they wouldn't be able to see us in the dark.

-Clank-

"Kevin!" Alice shouted looking for Kevin.

-Clank-

"Dad!" I shouted as well, trying my best to help my mother.

Sounds of metal chains rustling around were echoing around in the farm shed.

"Thank goodness..." Alice sighed in relief as she walked towards the shed. "Kevin, we got to get home, it's dark." Mother then put me down so I could walk again.

-Clank-

"Dad!" I said in joy as I ran around to the entrance of the shed.

"Dad...?"

πŸ…’πŸ…˜πŸ…›πŸ…”πŸ…πŸ…’πŸ…”

It was him... He was hanged from the ceiling with a chain. He was struggling to get out of the chain with him scratching and pulling the chain around his neck. A man in a steel suit of armor was standing right in front of him, the man then picked up a large wooden stake off of the floor and walked towards dad.

My father looked afraid and hopeless, he didn't know what to do. But in those final seconds, my father saw me and his face of hopelessness faded away and he began to smile, "Farewell." He said as the man shoved the wooden stake into my father's heart. The man then let the chain down with my father's lifeless body falling to the ground.

After a few seconds, I finally understood what was happening at the moment.

He was dead... and I couldn't do anything to save him.

My mother then took me off my feet and began running away as fast as she could holding me close to her. I then clung tightly to her as I began to weep excessively. Even though I was crying, I couldn't even say a single word or make a single sound, I was too afraid...
