Chapter 1 - Homeless

"Baby, marry me!"

Jun Weichen's eyes widened in furious horror as the handsome man before her slid out from his seat at the luxurious dining table to kneel before her. A shower of rose petals rained down on her head, as the restaurant staff gathered around them in a circle, applauding. The band was playing soft, romantic music, and guests around them wiped their eyes, dazzled by the incredible display of romance.

"Wife?" Jun Weichen spat out from between gritted teeth, her eyes narrowing on the beaming man below her.

"Baby, I divorced her yesterday!" The man explained, patiently, "You're the only one for me, I love you!"

Jun Weichen closed her eyes, trying to suppress her rising blood pressure and urge to slap the kneeling man. Taking a deep breath, she sighed miserably and pinched the space between her eyebrows.

Then, without so much another glance or a word more to the proposing man, she got up and marched out of the restaurant. Bursting out of the fancy hotel's double doors, still trailing rose petals out of her hair, she reached into her purse to pull out a sleek, dark cellphone. Jabbing the side of the phone, she swiftly ejected the SIM card within and replaced it with a new one. Opening the phone, she punched in a number that she knew by heart before putting it to her ear, stonefaced. A few short rings later, Jun Weichen was greeted with uproarious cackling on the other end of the line. The dam that had been holding back her fury cracked and burst forth from her heart.

"Si Tian! You bitch!" She shrieked into her phone, "You fucking tricked me! You said he only wanted to meet and apologize!"

"Only you, Sis Chen," Si Tian giggled into the phone, "Only you would dump a guy who broke up with his wife to propose to you!"

"Who wanted him to do that!" Jun Weichan seethed into the phone, "No one asked him to. He knows full well I only lived with him and his wife until I could afford a place of my own! Who knew he would lust after an old classmate so much he would dump his high school sweetheart, the dirty old fool. Now I cannot even return to their place to get my things because his wife hates my guts!"

"Sis Chen, Sis Chen," Si Tian giggled, clearly still enjoying Jun Weichen's misery, "So being too beautiful and accomplished is such a pain! Have you found a new clinic to practice in?"

Jun Weichen sighed, the valley in between her brows deepening, "No, not a lot of hospitals are willing to take a surgeon who cannot stand for the whole surgery, no matter if they are accomplished, or a veteran or not..."

"Where are you staying right now" Si Tian said, suddenly concerned, "You said the wife wouldn't let you back into the house for your things?"

"A hotel nearby, for now" Jun Weichen sighed, "I cannot stay for long, my military benefits are not enough to pay for it. It wont be long before they put me out on the street! I was thinking about hooking up with a new guy to find a place to stay, but whose to say they wouldn't propose too?"

Si Tian suppressed a new fit of giggles. Only Jun Weichen would choose homelessness over romantic commitment!

"Si Tian~" Jun Weichen whined over the phone, "You're my beloved best friend and medical school classmate! Can't I just live with you~ Pretty please!"

"Sis Chen," Si Tian said patiently, "My apartment is so small, it can barely fit me! Plus, how will I ever bring home a good man if I'm hiding such a hottie in my bedroom?"

Jun Weichen nodded sullenly, she knew how small her friend's home was. Assistant professors did not make much money.

"How about you meet me at the University?"Si Tian said suddenly, "I have a friend who is looking for a roommate! She is a bit quirky, but she is super nice a pretty, I can set you up, and maybe you two will be able to afford some place together!"

Jun Weichen was willing to give anyone a try at this point, regardless of how quirky they were.

"Sounds good! I'll head right over!" She turned towards the street with a tap of her walking stick and raised her arm to hail a taxi towards her old medical school.
