Chapter 3 - Weird

"May? Are you okay?" May looked up at Dahlia. Dahlia Sinclair's green eyes looked a bit nervous. As she shuffled her weight to her other foot, a low ponytail of blonde hair so pale it looked white fell over her shoulder. May had met Dahlia three years ago in the 7th grade. Dahlia's family had to move here for her stepfather's new job (well, new three years ago). Dahlia transferred in about halfway through the school year and by sheer coincidence, she had the exact same schedule as May. Not long later, May had gained a sister. Almost anyone who knew them would say these two were the closest female besties in school.

Dahlia had called out to May because it had been several minutes since the bell that ended the school day had rung, and May hadn't moved. May smiled at Dahlia. "I'm fine", she said. [Sort of.]

May had been feeling weird all day. It wasn't the thought of bird poop in her room. It was a little bit about that dream from this morning, but most of it is probably because..... [It's tomorrow.] The real reason Dahlia is concerned. [The day Mom died.] Five years ago tomorrow, May's mother disappeared.

"Let's go", May added. She didn't like talking about her mother. Dahlia understood this and both girls were quiet as they left. As they reached the school's entrance, they saw a cat sitting just outside the gate. He had all black fur and olive green eyes, and seemed to be waiting for them. Jack did this sometimes; he'd show up out of nowhere and follow May around for a while.

[If he was human, he'd be considered a stalker, but because he's my pet cat, everyone thinks it's cute that he likes me so much.] May tried to shake the thought. She's not sure why she occasionally gets the feeling that this animal is stalking her. He's just a cat, but sometimes he makes her uncomfortable for no reason.

Jack stood up and trailed after May and Dahlia. May often visited Dennis after school. [I want to tell him about that weird dream I just had.]
