"A sudden decrease in the death count? What caused this?" She said, raising an eyebrow. "Did a war end?"
"No, Mistress, " the shadow said.
"No? No, what? No there was no decrease? No, you don't know who caused this? Or no, you should not be here in the first place annoying me!"
"No. I mean yes. I..I, " it started but a glare quickly fixed its stuttering. "There was no war, Mistress."
"Then what caused the change?" she demands in an exasperated tone.
"We are looking into the matter."
"So you don't know," she says coldly. "Incompetent servents, " she mutters under her breath.
Fearfully, the shadow says, "We..we don't but we have a suspect in mind."
"Oh, do enlighten me."
"It's an assassin, that disappeared."
"You're telling me one person caused this, " she says, getting serious. "And what do you mean disappeared?"
"We don't know. His disappearance was the only major event that happens near the decrease."
"How big was the decrease?"
"It went from 19.7443 humans to 19.74729 humans per second. This takes into account the count from all the words though he was only active on Earth."
"Impressive. Do you think he is a good nominee for the God Of War?" She never did get along with him.
"Yes, Mistress. But we can't find him."
"A soul like that can't go to the Spirit World. It is too corrupt. It has to be here. Did life borrow the soul?"
"No, Mistress. He has not borrowed one since the war."
"Is his soul stuck on earth as a ghost?"
"We did not check, Mistress."
"Then what are you here for? Send someone to check!"
As the shadow was about to exit, Death changed her mind.
"Wait, get my scrying mirror here. I will check myself."
The servant quickly went out and retrieved an enchanted wooden box.
When he came back, he knelt down in front of her throne and held out the chest.
Death opened the box and looked upon the black surface of the mirror with a small smile on her face. Carefully, she took it out and placed it on her lap. The servant closed the box and moved to the side.
Placing her hands on either side of the mirror, Death whispered in a strange tongue. "Show me the soul that disappeared."
Yet nothing was shown. Thinking that the mirror had not heard her, she repeated, " Show me the soul that disappeared."
Yet again nothing was shown. That was impossible. The mirror always responded to her. Disbelieving, she tried again. And again. Yet no matter how many times she tried, the result was the same.
Growling in frustration, she spotted the chains. Could it be because of the chains? No. I used the mirror with the chains before. It's not going to change now.
"Who was the last person he killed?"
"Teo Garvale."
"The supposed genius who is obsessed with 'helping humanity' through his made-up existence that he calls 'God'? (Author: I do not mean any offense. It is just for literary purposes.) As if humanity can still be saved. Why would he be targeted?"
"Some people don't exactly like his views, Mistress."
"Oh, it's a wonder why. Where is he right now?"
"He should be in the Spirit World, Mistress." Figures. The annoying ones always end up there.
"Send a request for Life to send him here for a few questions."
"Right away, Mistress."
"Also, contact a Time Wraith to track the assassin's soul."
"Yes, Mistress."
"And Amon."
"Yes, Mistress."
"Keep this matter under wraps. I don't want to hear any low gods gossiping about this. Am I clear?"
"Yes, Mistress." Bowing once, it quickly left the dimly lit room.
"Let the hunt begin."
