Chereads / Dearest Belladonna / Chapter 4 - Christina I

Chapter 4 - Christina I

In the lands south of the Kingdom of Gaile, several Republics thrive. They have formed a united confederation hoping to end wars and secure better deals for their people.

Actually, Christina begs to differ.

The Republics' Confederation was only using 'Peace' and 'Economy' as a front. In reality, those ideals are a far cry from what the Republics really want.

"Now. Christina, the Council has brought you here to oversee the plans for your infiltration of Gaile," the Minister of the Right informed her.

'Why else would I be here, you greasy pig?' However, Christina simply remained meek and nodded along.

The Minister of the Right spoke up, "Let me introduce Christina. She was an immigrant from Gaile after the previous Kings have decided to kill all their bastards, including dear Christina."

Mocking glances filled with fake pity were directed at her. She knew what to do, she lowered her head and walked over to her seat. She wanted these dignitaries of the Republics to think that she was weak.

'Hah. Weak.' She inwardly sneered.

"By the mercy of the Confederation and of the Goddess Anne, we will give her a chance to avenge herself against Gaile and take what was hers."

Shouts and applause roared in the room. Everyone seemed pleased with his introduction. Even the Minister of the Left was placated with his words of righteousness and revenge.

But Christina knew better. All these men in this room saw her as a toy to be played with. And like the woman she ought to be, she used this to her advantage.

She'll take her throne as Queen. And she'll destroy these men once she gains her rightful place. But for now, she is just a pawn in their game of chess.

"She must be like the dignitary from the Republics," one minister proposed. It was immediately shut down with glares from most people in the room.

Christina sighed, 'Even as a fake representative, women can't hold power.'

"How about as a priestess of Lady Anne?" A new voice spoke up. Christina turned to survey the man behind the suggestion.

It was her brother. Eric.

"Sir Eric. That is a great suggestion," the Minister of the Right started. But before he was able to add any further, the opposing Minister of the Left rejected the idea.

"How dare you shame the Goddess Anne with such blasphemy?!" He looked around the room for support from his comrades. The clergy nodded. With esteem, he continued, "Lady Anne would refuse such a motion immediately, you heretic!"

"Perhaps not, Minister," a youth refuted from the right side, "It is rational to have Lady Christina become a priestess. Her different religion would excuse her indifference and stoic attitude in Gaile's court. The Goddess Anne would appreciate this cunning move."

As several grunts of approval were herd from the right, the clergy from the left spoke up, "Heretics! Stop there-"

The doors to the Council slammed wide open as a messenger from ran in. Eyes trailed the young girl as she huffed and supported herself on a wooden pillar.

"What is it, girl?" The Minister of the Left questioned in a warning tone.

"The King of Gaile..." Everyone stared at the panting messenger.

"King Frederick has died. No heir has risen to throne. The Upper House is in chaos." Most ministers of both sides stood up in urgency.

As the woman was escorted out of the room, shouts resounded in the court.

One voice drowned the other, until only one chant was heard. "Lady Christina will be the Confederation's spy as Lady Anne's priestess."

The room was shook with such voice that the Minister of the Left, his conservative allies, and the clergy has quieted down.

The only man who remained stoic, and dare Christina say, amused with this development was the Minister of the Right.

His eyes darted at Christina and she felt that his glance radiated cold.

She was broken out of her trance as a hand slipped into hers. It was Eric, smiling happily as he looked up to her.

"Now, we could go back to Father's house."
