Chapter 1 - All stories begin somewhere

"Here, put the 7 here." She stated her head leaning on his shoulder. Her heavy French accent made her hard to understand.

Aster pointed to the square next to one she said, "This one? There is a seven above it though."

"No!" She laughed at his horrible joke and the two were left smiling as they fell into harmless arguing at the scene.

They two were working together to complete a sudoku, and from their surroundings, you could tell they were on an airplane.

The laughs between the two were ceaseless and the smiles eternal.

When they finally completed the sodoku; Kei fell asleep. Aster's eyes were locked on her face and he took in every detail. He knew he was a creeper at this moment but everything seemed so flawless. Her face was so peaceful as she carelessly fell asleep on his shoulder. He wasn't tired so he pulled down the tray in front of him along with his computer. He loaded a blank document and started to type away with his free arm.

His movements were unhurried and the sound of the keys was minimized by his typing. The title of the document, "Is this where we bid adieu?"

The opening was nothing special but had an extremely similar situation to the one in his life. The main character was sitting alone and in his row and was setting up his computer for the flight. His look was a resting scold which made others not want to approach him. He knew this and sighed with a piece of jerky in his mouth while he closed down his computer before take off.

On the screen in front of him, he looked through the games and found sodoku. He wasn't the best at it but it was something to do.

"Bonsoir!" He heard from beside him and looked over to see the most ravishing lady. Dark brunette hair fell just past her shoulders. A body shape girls strive for and men dream of. Her dark eyes were large contrasting her paler skin. She wore no make-up and it made Aster look at her in a different light than others.

Aster was stunned, "Bonsoir." He spoke in an American accent and was stupefied a lady like herself would talk to a guy like him.

She lit up at hearing the accent, "Oh, American?"

"Yes, you traveling to meet someone?"

She sat beside him after she put her stuff in the compartment over them.

"My boyfriend. Met him while he was on a trip two years ago."

Aster smiled and lightly clapped, "Congrats, he know you're coming?"

"No, meant to be a surprise for our two-year anniversary."

The conversation then drifted to silence as Aster returned his attention to the screen.

"Looks like fun," Kei commented leaning over to see his screen more.

"You play before?"

"Years ago,"

The two began having an idle conversation and Aster offered her a piece of his jerky to which she declined as she was a vegetarian.

This conversation then led directly into the conversation from the start.

Aster took his own liberties on the scene but the overall situation was still there.

Aster wrote his own character to be in love with her from first sight but the reality wasn't as such, he had actually blown her off the first time she said hey, not even looking over to her before she asked about what he was playing. Nor had she put any bags in the compartment above them.

He watched her face and felt himself release a sigh, "Why couldn't I have met you two years earlier?" He voice not above that of a whisper.

He saved and closed the computer in time with the airline hostess to walk around asking about drinks.

"What would you like?"

"Two whiskeys."

"For her?"

"A water will be fine." He tried to smile to ease the expected tension at seeing his stone hard face but it likely scared the hostess more.

The drinks were handed over and it seemed Kei hadn't woken up from the movement. She rolled a bit in her sleep but only nuzzled more in his chest. Aster obliged and leaned his seat back to let her be more comfortable.

With a whiskey down the hatch, he tried to get some shut eye.

---

"Sir?"

Groggy Aster tried to lift his arm but found it weighed down. Kei was still sound asleep.

"What would you like to eat?" The hostess, different from last time, questioned.

"What are the choices?"

"A chicken parm, or a plain pasta."

"I'll have the parm and she'll have a pasta."

He let Kei sleep as long as possible but when food finally came he nudged her to wake up.

"Five more minutes."

He nudged her again.

"But I don't wanna."

Third time's the charm.

"Fine, fine I'm up." She got off his shoulder and blinked a few times get a feeling for the environment she was in.

"Food is here, got you the pasta."

She looked and saw in front of her was a tray of pasta, water, cupcake, and chips.

Aster's was similar expect he had a parm instead of pasta and a cookie instead of a cupcake.

"Thank you."

"It's not a problem. Was the right thing to do."

"So why were you in France?" She asked beginning to eat.

"Just kind of ended up there. Walked into the airport and asked them for a ticket anywhere. The lady thought I was crazy and insisted I choose a place. I turned to the guy behind me and asked where he was going to where he responded with France. So I was on the next open flight."

Kei laughed at the embellished story, "Why would you ever do that?"

"What would you do if you had enough money it didn't matter?"

"Solve world hunger." She held her head high and held a hand over heart trying her hardest not to smile.

Aster played along, "So humanitarian. I need to not be so self-serving."

"Your parents were okay with you leaving like that?"

"Likely didn't even know I was gone. Advantages of living on your own. How about your's they okay with you leaving out of nowhere?"

Kei was confused at his question, "Why wouldn't they know I left?"

"You have no bags nor are you wearing any make-up."

"Could all be checked."

"I doubted that."

"You don't trust me already? That's hurtful!" She adopted a fake hurt face at his assumptions. Aster didn't fall for it.

"So you ran away from home and are meeting up with your boyfriend in the states. Let me guess you knew someone who had a standby ticket and you got on for free."

Kei stopped eating and looked down at her hands in guilt, everything he said was correct.

"I really don't care about your reasoning. I do understand though, so if you need help with anything. Text me." He pulled out a piece of paper and wrote down his number.

She thanked him and the conversation ended abruptly. They engaged in pointless but humorous, to them, conversations before landing.

---

Aster found himself watching her run out into the world from the airport and asked himself a single question, "Is this where we bid adieu?"

Across his eyes, he saw a percent appear, "10%"

He was rightfully shocked and had no understanding of what this number meant. It soon faded so he re-asked himself the same question, "Is this where we bid adieu?"

The same number appeared and just like last time Aster waited for it fade and tried again for the third time. First time is a coincidence, second is an anomaly, a third time is a pattern. Just like the first two times it returned with 10% and just like that he knew the probability that this would be the final time they saw each other.
