In the later part of 2012, people talked about a very infamous urban legend all the time. It didn't matter where you were from, people from across the globe regardless of color, faith, or station in life knew about it. Some talked about it in fear, some would snicker in mockery, others dismissed it with disdain. By the time the calendar hit the month of December, the world wide web had a massive traffic of netizens expounding on Earth's impending apocalypse.
Scientist strongly denied such childish interpretations, claiming that it was a gross misunderstanding of common people. A whole host of articles, scientific explanations, and even astronomical evaluations flooded the internet easily and firmly dismissed the so-called Apocalypse.
But then again, people still liked to talk about how the end of the world would come. Will it be like the movies? An asteroid? A plague? Zombies? An alien invasion? The students of M University made it a point to discuss the topic extensively. The students excavated legends upon legends like miners in the deepest mountain full of gold. Some even collected all the recent odd events like clues to the world's biggest perfect murder scene.
There was even an anonymous dedicated team who placed all so-called evidence on a block of whiteboard complete with pins, red yarn, colored tape, and a rainbow of scribbles here and there. The students of M University were all free to "contribute" to the so-called investigation of the"Mayan's Message" exhibited in the Unviversity's main library. It was a very lively event that hooked students to spend time in the library to do some research.

"Prepared for D-day, Zee my girl?" A girl with ginger curls snickered, her hands were busy scrolling on her phone screen for hilarious bits of gossip. It was boring in the library. All she could hear was the steady hum of several air conditioners, the thrum of whispers between students, the endless scratching of pen against paper as it scribbled all the notes that they could possibly need, and the occasional rustle of old, worn pages from some ancient book. She didn't need anything from the library. But, being a good friend, not to mention only friend, she had to spend her time in the place for the sake of friendship. "This one says, a certain man turned jobless and bought a truckload of food supplies!"
"Come on! Scientists already proved that's just some urban legend," Zee rolled her eyes and huffed shortly. She started grabbing her notes and shoved them one by one into her trustworthy backpack. She had to push her lunchbox in a corner to accommodate some of her class modules. "Besides, you believe that thing?"
"Pssh! It's fun!" She shrugged, and raised her right hand in solemn oath, "I, Rina D. Oliver, am a woman of the twenty-first century. Thus, I shall only believe in facts proved by Science!"
"Lay off it, will you?" She took her backpack briskly, it was a little bit heavy for a five-foot tall girl with skinny build. But she was used to it. This has been her partner in her two years in college. And it will still be with her the next year if she was careful with it. "You have Remedial classes after school break?
At the sound of remedial classes, the smirk planted on Rina's face was completely wiped off. A small raincloud seemed to appear on top of her head as she muttered darkly, "That heartless professor! He could have scheduled the class after New Year. But noooo, we have to get back to school right after Christmas, and burn our brains on reviews and exams! You have to leave all your notes with me!"
Zee snickered at her miserable friend. Checking out the time on her wristwatch, she pulled her friend away from the library. Some students were giving them odd, if amused, gazes.
It was sweltering hot outside. As soon as they left the cool confines of the library, they were slapped by a very warm wave of air. They could almost feel their faces melting from the heat. Tiny beads of sweat rolled from temples, their eyes were squinting at the heatwaves reflected by the rows of car parked in front of the library.
"Ugh!" Rina grunted, she almost ran back into the library for sweet cold air. "When was the last rain? It's December, and we have winter season in hell."
"Do we even have winter season?" Not another person was in sight. And for a good cause too. Who wanted to be roasted alive. Zee dragged her friend in her brave crusade of crossing the field under the heat of the sun.
"I swear, it's the dessert." Rina grunted. They rushed towards safety and onto the roofed walkway. Bless the souls of the architect who designed it. It was very useful in sheltering students against direct heat, and of course from the long absent rain. "I'm gonna dance in the rain when it does."
"I'm sure you're wishing for a typhoon to flood Mr. Emmet away from school," Zee chuckled. She brushed away the sweat from her temple. It wasn't even a few minutes since they went out of the library, but they were sweating bullets.
"Of course not," Rina shrieked good naturedly, "Even zombies couldn't stop that man! I'm gonna wish for a rain filled with virus. That way, he'll stay in bed until next year!"
"As if that'll happen," Zee grabbed her friend's hand and sprinted the last few meters towards their classroom. It was their last class right before Christmas break. Light laughter was heard under the heat of the sun.
