Synopsis :

Endless sky and infinite space, the cosmos isn't some paradise waiting to be found, it is full of darkness and danger, death and terror of the great unknown. However, for that glittering swath of blue, we have no fear! For the longevity of men, we have no regrets! Nothing shall stand in our way because it is finally our time, our age! The age of cosmos exploration!

POSITIVE REVIEW :

The main problem everyone has is that it tries for "real science" and falls short of the mark with inaccuracy abound, but this is a scifi fiction and not based on real life. The author is the god of this world, and what he says is the truth within it. The aforementioned issue isn't even a concern to those with little to no working knowledge in the sciences, and for those who are more competent in the area it comes down to whether you can accept it and enjoy the story for what it is, a fictional space exploration of the final human survivors searching for a new planet and avoiding dangers in between while technologically growing in the process.

What is not mentioned in the reviews, is that AOCE has a solid lineup of characters with their own distinct personalities and very little to no cringe worthy backstories or moments. The character interactions are superb, and nothing feels forced.

The plot is slow at the start and doesn't really pick up until they leave earth in it's apocalypse, so you do have to trudge through quite a few chapters in the beginning, but you will be glad you did. The plot itself is inspired and has an excellent pace. There were a few chapters I found a bit tedious, but the overall quality of the story more than makes up for it.

My only concern is that the story being complete with just under 500 chapters, a short story by the qidian ruler, there isn't enough room to explore all the potential growth the human race is shown to potentially have in the novel, and that later on the story will be rushed or cut short, but that is only speculation until we get to that point.

NEGATIVE REVIEW :

I came into this series wanting to like it. It seems like it could be similar to Battlestar Galactica or Macross. But it's not.

My first big problem with the series is the crazy fake science. The author doesn't seem to have a great grasp on most scientific subjects, and rather than gloss over that lack of knowledge (e.g. Our sensors say that planet has an atmosphere) he explains that events happen because of fake reasons (e.g. That planet has an atmosphere because there isn't an asteroid belt around it and the gravity is stable). Making up pretend science is fine in sci-fi, but making up real science makes your genius scientists sound stupid.

I'm also not happy with the racism in the series. Characters are often completely defined by stereotypes of their race. The main character expresses relief that he had an excuse to not save any Indians or Indonesians.

I'd say that characters are extremely flat for what should be an ensemble cast. There are maybe three that have a real personality so far, but not much of one. That can maybe be forgiven since it's still early, and the main story has barely started.

The story seems like it has promise. Like I said at the beginning, it reminds me of Macross and Battlestar Galactica with the space ark feel. Unfortunately, I don't really trust this author to pull it off.

So I'm glad Qidian International brought this unique novel to the English language, but I wish they had chosen a higher quality one. I would love to see some good Chinese military sf.
