Chapter 2 - Murder And Butterflies

Mondays were Colt's favourite days. He was never sure why but the thought of starting a new week always made him feel like he was inhaling in a fresh breath of air, perhaps it had something to do with new beginnings. This ofcorse was always a point of argument between him and his friends throughout his high school days. He would show up every Monday morning with his bag casually slung over his one shoulder, beaming to the point of making those around him unable to carry their bad mood but still managing to instill an annoyance toward him in each of his friends at the same time.

Colt shook his head, clearing his mind of the memories that had come flooding in like a wave. He was here, in the midst of another new beginning, and although this one hadn't felt like a breath of fresh air, it wasn't as suffocating as where he had come from, he could breathe, and over time he had learnt to like the atmosphere here in the place that rained more than any other on earth. God must have laughed when he first people to set foot on this land dubbed it the sunniest place in the country, he chucked to himself as Kai, his partner, approached his desk holding two coffee mugs, what he assumed was their new case file tucked under his arm and a wide smile on his lips. "He has gossip again, I just know it."

"You would not believe the news I just found out", not catching on to the mockery in Colt's eyes he continued, "so the boss went on a tangent about not having any competent assistants in the office, you know to do the menial things like take get food for our meetings and hand out files. So Elison told me that he heard boss on the phone…" The rest of the conversation fell on deaf ears as Colt opened the file and fingered through the pages, the sketch at the end blanking his mind momentarily. The side profile of the woman had him staring wide eyed as though afraid he would blink and miss a single detail.

"This is unreal", Colt muttered barely audibly.

"I know right? I didn't believe it at first either but I managed to catch a snippet of conversation when..."

Turning the page and looking at the sketch from another angle he let out a small smile, "finally".

"I know. Although I didn't take you for the type to be interested in having a pretty lady work here, I mean we all know the boss is all for it because this is a man cave and he wants someone not as scary as his wife around but you've only ever had eyes for this case and…" Kai trailed off, turning his eyes to his friend and colleague, noticing his were firmly glued to the file he had casually thrown on the table earlier, a pout played at his lips, "Colt, have you been ignoring me this entire time?"

"Hm?" Colt looked up absent-mindedly then directed a questioning gaze to the upset young man, "when has the crime been committed, how come you have the file already?", Kai responded with a sigh, realizing his attempt at distracting his friend from this case that has haunted them both had been an utter failure. Colt had stubbornly stayed on the case that long been declared cold for the better part of the year, hoping to catch something they had missed when the thin file had first been opened. His superiors had not minded since his doing so had not affected his work in the slightest, but what neither of them had expected was that there would be another murder after so much time had passed. Colt closed the file and met the slightly annoyed gaze of his colleague, "a pretty lady would be nice if it meant I wouldn't have to subject myself to your horrible cups of coffee. Let's go run this by chief so we can get started", rising from his seat he made his way to Chief Barnes' office, failing to notice the unhappy look in his friends' eyes and the butterflies fluttering in his stomach.

After the first murder just over three years ago the town had been shaken. The evidence had been little and inconclusive, having no clues pointing to the perpetrator at the scene of the crime and only the vague description of the woman by drunks at the bar, the chief was left with no choice but to eventually abandon the case, starting detective Lew off on what he perceived as a failure and dealing him and his superiors a second blow when a similar crime was committed just months later, this time at the most expensive hotel in the area, involving a man most the people knew well. This time there were only two things they managed to learn before closing the file again, the woman wore a flower in her hair and they may have bitten off much more than they could chew.

*In a room overlooking a small garden*

It was funny how nature functioned. The sky had been a clear blue all day yet it suddenly decided to rain. The sky told little lies, much like people, not realizing the negative effects it brought those who dared to trust it were anything but little.

"Well at least the sky sometimes gives us little signs and warnings… then again, so do people in their own ways. I suppose it will be time to get to work soon", Ria sighed, uncurling her legs from beneath her and rising from the couch in one smooth motion before making her way back to her room. She paused at the sight of her reflection in the window. Standing at 179cm she was not one to blend in, and with dark eyes that seemed to sparkle when she laughed and lips slightly tilted upwards at the corners as though she were about to share a naughty secret, she held a beauty others would describe as captivating, such that made one pause and look a little longer. She tilted her pear shaped face sideways a little, her brown waves slightly caressing her shoulders as they followed the motion of her head. Smiling slightly, Ria turned back toward her original path, "well I suppose I'm a walking lie as well".
