Lucia Van Horn grew impatient with each passing second. Reno had been with Dr Sharp for thirty minutes already, that was longer than she had expected the meeting to last. though she knew it was a bad idea having her best friend talk to her crush, it seemed the best option at the time.
Now, she paced back and forth in front of the closed door of the office. oh how she wished to take a peek, if she could only hear or see what was going on in there. but Reno had insisted she wait outside. what was going on? why was it taking so long? Lucia was frantic.
The door came open some twenty minutes later, Reno walked out, thanking the doctor casually, then she shut the door behind her.
"well, that was a long conversation " Lucia snorted, giving her friend an attitude.
"am sorry it took so long, once we started talking and he got me to feel at ease, I just couldn't.... " Reno started to explain but Lucia cut in,
"yeah yeah, I know, he's good at that, he's a psychologist remember? "
"a really good one at that", there was a smile on Reno's face that suddenly made her friend uneasy.
"all this waiting has made me really hungry" Lucia said, tugging at her purse, "you can tell me all about it while we grab a bite" she said and started off towards the exit. "oh, by the way, you're buying, that's for keeping me waiting "
Reno shrugged and followed her.
The soda tasted so good in the afternoon heat. Lucia drank with her eyes closed, savoring the juicy goodness of her gatorade. they sat at the Munchy plaza.
"so, how did it go?" she finally asked
Reno chewed up the fries in her mouth before answering, washing it down with a chilled soda.
"I guess I do have a problem " she started, "or at least Dr Sharp thinks I do"
"really? what did he say? "
"he thinks my inability to admit the opposite sex stems from a past experience I may have had, a bad one precisely, one that may have scarred me emotionally "
"so, you told him everything? "
"I told him what he needed to work with"
Reno paused to study her friend. Lucia seemed a bit off, somewhat upset. it was unusual. she had that dark spot in her eyes which only appeared when something troubled her.
"what's wrong? " she asked
Lucia sighed. it was obvious she was sad over something but she wouldn't say.
"Lu " Reno called, trying to get her attention but was met with a cold silence.
"anyway, am meeting with him again next week, we'll begin my therapy, to see if he can fix me "
"fix you? what makes you think he can fix you? he's a psychologist not a therapist and you don't need fixing, you just need to get out of your little bubble of insecurity and date. you hear me? date, that's all you need, not therapy "
so, she had been listening, Reno noted. Lucia's outburst was emphasised by the crushed to-go cup she held in her hand. poor gatorade, the last of it found itself not in her belly, but half spilled on the polished table and on the ground.
"it's just a trial, Lu " Reno added.
Lucia looked furious. she grabbed her purse, pushed out of her chair ,and just before she stormed out, barked at Reno,
"therapy won't fix you, and Dr Sharp certainly won't either. this was a stupid mistake".
