After my reply, awkward silence followed. He stared at me straight in my eyes. My enthusiasm dropped a bit. A dull throb in my head made me bite my lips. I tried to find his reaction to my answer. However, it met a deadpan face.
"You don't know the whole story," he silently looked at the sky outside the window and did not speak further. There was an aggrieved feeling in his voice.
He gave me no further clues. After some time, I left the hall. I had a bad feeling in my gut I would not get the job which I didn't. That didn't come across as a surprise. I was angry and resentful at the interviewer. I couldn't guess in what way had I answered his question wrong for him to fail me.
Only later did I realize that he wanted to give me time to consider my choice.
I found out that they saved the baby from the fire, but her mother had passed away. The fireman entered the fire to save the mother, but it was already too late. He could not save her.
