Chapter 1 - Days of Spring: Welcome Back

Amidst the field of sunflowers in full bloom and the sunset on the horizon, I stood there on top of the hill overlooking the forest holding the hand of my best friend. Her eyes filled with tears and so were mine.

"Do you promise you'll come back?" she finally asked, breaking the silence. I turned to look at her. She had long hair like the sunset and was wearing her favorite straw hat and ribbon. I gave her an uncertain face, but finally squeaked the words I wished to say.

"Yeah, promise!" I began to hug her while we both sobbed our eyes out. The sun's orange hue shining on our face and the wind picking up as so the sunflowers slowly danced with the wind. "I promise that I'll come back!" I said weakly, "Please, just promise me you forget me."

Her voice came out weakly, "I promise!"

After our promise, the sun had set and so came the dusk and that was the last time I saw my friend. I moved away at the age of ten to the United States.

*Ding, dong, dang*, the sounds of the train bells came on over the speakerphone. "All passengers please get ready to exit the train. We will soon arrive at the platform."

I looked out the window of the speeding train, and admired the scenery of the sakura petals, dancing in the air gently to the ground. The pink petals symbolizing spring and a whole new school year. "It really has been a long time," I said to myself. I was back on my way to my hometown of Hanayono after moving away six years ago to the States. So I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia coming back to where it all started.

My hometown is sort of a countryside town, with barely anything to do there. The landscape of the area is pretty rural. There were a lot of rice paddies and most of the town was surrounded by a forest. So I expected the train to be empty, but there was an old man sitting in a seat one over from me.

By the color of his skin, you could tell he worked outside. His skin was fairly bronzed and he also had a fair amount of muscles for his age, he also wore a thin tank top and a pair of long. I would guess that he was a farmer of some sorts, but I couldn't confirm it, because he has been asleep for the past 6 hours of the train ride.

It looks like I'll finally be able to see her soon.

"Hey, young man," The old man seems to have woken up from hearing the loud announcement over the speakerphone.

"Yes, sir?" I took my gaze off the window and met the eyes of the old man.

He looked a tad worried when he noticed my luggage on the rack above my seat. The old man gave me a sad look and gestured towards my large red duffle bag, "Would you like any help with getting those down?"

A look of uncertainty ran over my face, as I looked up at my bag hanging three feet above me. I've been having many different people helping me recently and it didn't feel right to have someone so old to help me when I was so young. "I don't know, sir. Are you sure?"

He washed away my doubts with a smile you would expect from an innocent child. "I may look old, but this clock still has some nice working gears."

I gave a short laugh and gestured toward the bag, "Then by all means, please help me."

Giving me a slight nod, he picked my duffle bag off of the carrier and placed it on my lap gently. "There you go, boy."

"Thank you, sir!" I said graciously, bowing my head down to show my thanks.

"No problem, young man," he replied back with a warm smile. But the next moment he had, that sad look appeared again. "Would you like me to push you out?"

I gripped the arms of my wheelchair tightly and answered with a smile, "Yes please."
