Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The truth about magic

10 years before...

My name is Lucist and I'm just an orphan who adopted by the church since I was a child.

I was just an ordinary member of the church until they found a high amount of magic power in my body. I began to study magic and at the age of 13, I started researching multiple kinds of magic especially healing magic.

During my research, I started to doubt the origin of magic. What is the source of magic power? is this power really a gift from the god?

Knowing this, the church immediately gives me the order to stop my research about the origin of magic because this is an act of heresy for doubting God's power.

In the end, curiosity got the better of me and I decided to continue my research secretly until I finally found out the real source of magic power.

There is no such convenient thing as magic in the world. To gain something, you must sacrifice something in equal value. This is the basic principle of "equivalent exchange". So, what kind of sacrifice in order to gain unbelievable power as magic?

There is only one answer in my mind and that is "life force"

Using small scale magic like "fireball" perhaps only caused you to fatigue but using large scale magic such as "meteor shower" will burn your life force and decrease your life expectancy.

In that case why every member of the church can perform magic as they wish? do they continue using their life force? or they got a blessing from the god?

After some investigation, I found out that the church's sacred altar is actually an artifact to store magic power. The sacred altar sucking the life force of the believer and convert it to magic power to the church member without them knowing. They ended up using magic power while believing it's the power of God.

After discovering the fact, I tried to expose this dark side of the church but in the end, nobody believes me. I tried to resist as the church issued an order to arrest me. Overwhelmed with the church's power, I had no choice other than escape with a heavily injured body.
