Chapter 3 - Menus

Leo regarded Callie warily, somewhat caught off guard by her straightforward and confident attitude, a direct contrast from Marie's soft-spoken and gentle demeanor. Leo gave a quick bow of his head and introduced himself.

"So," Callie asked Leo, an amused look on her face, "Why did you choose no class?"

Leo, although expecting the question, was still not fully prepared to answer it. "I dunno...", he stuttered out, "I just thought it might be interesting".

Callie threw her head back and laughed. "I like you kid. Interesting sure is one way to put it. Not many people to choose something interesting, especially when their entire life could depend on their decision".

Leo continued to scrutinize his shoes as Callie talked to him, not wanting to meet her gaze. This powerful and dominant woman had thrown him off his game, or whatever game he had, anyway.

Callie shrugged. "Well, there's no going back now. Interesting or not, this is your decision and you're stuck with it. This class isn't completely useless, it just requires a lot of skill and dedication to pull off. No one who has started as a no-class has ended up well. Trust me, I would know". Callie's expression turned melancholy after the last second. She looked absorbed in contemplation. Leo continued to patiently wait, choosing to take this chance to take a closer look at Callie. She had a pink and black skirt on with pink stockings underneath. On top of her short hair cut was a similarly pink and black beret which accented the rest of her outfit nicely.

Callie snapped out of her stupor and turned to Leo, who quickly averted his eyes. "Sorry about that", she said. "Let's talk about the perks of the class, why don't we?"

Leo hastily assented, and Callie took a deep breath before beginning to speak. "No class is unique in that it has no base stat bonuses, no bonuses using certain weapons, and no unique skill tree. However, the no class can be incredibly powerful as the hero can freely move his attribute points at will, although it does take a little while for the change to take effect. In addition, no classes may use any weapon or any skill from any class, allowing them to have incredibly diverse roles in any group. The problem with this is that a no class hero will typically never have mastery with any one weapon, or, even if they did master a weapon, will not get the class stat boosts from using it. In addition, they received the same number of skill points as other classes, but had a lot more options to use them on. Therefore, it is very challenging for no classes to pick their skill usage correctly, especially because you cannot reassign your skill points".

Leo wore a somber look. Although the increased access to skill trees and weapon usage is very useful, it comes at a cost of mastery and skill. 'Oh well, I've already dug this hole deep enough, might as well make a home in it', he thought to himself.

Leo gestured for Callie to continue, and Callie took another deep breath before launching into the explanation. "You also have a slight advantage in attribute points. You get an extra 1 AP every 5 levels. AP can be distributed to 7 categories: Intelligence, Agility, Strength, Endurance, Dexterity, Charisma, and Wisdom. There are also a few other minor categories, such as luck and critical chance that can only be improved through items or permanent changes. No-class starts out with 3 points in luck, but loses it once it changes to another class. You start out with 20 points at the beginning that you can freely distribute. This is the same as all other classes, but they will also start with some base points in certain attributes. You will gain more as you level up."

Leo held up his hand to stop her. Callie nodded at him, and he asked "How do I access the menu system, you know to distribute the points and stuff?"

Callie looked a little caught off guard, but then laughed. "I always forget that newbies don't even know how to do that. It's pretty simple. Just think 'open menu' in your mind. You should see something pop up in your vision."

Leo nodded and thought "Open menu". Instantly, a menu popped up on screen. 'Welcome to Doria, Hero! Please distribute your attribute points however you wish. Just remember, it will cost gold to change them later on, so make sure you choose carefully.'

Leo looked at the (x) in the top right hand corner and focused on it. The pop up closed, showing a menu that was split into two columns. On the left column, it had the name of the attribute, while on the right it had the number of points assigned to that attribute, which currently showed 0 for all points. It also showed that he had 20 attribute points available. Underneath that table was a similar table, titled "Minor Attributes". The only attribute that currently showed was Luck, which had 3 points placed in it. Leo then looked towards the top of the menu, which showed tabs, similar to a web browser. He focused on the only other open tab, and it brought up a screen with 5 options on it: Tank, Melee, Ranged, Mage, and Support. At the top of the page it said "Skill Tree" in large letters. Slightly underneath that, it said "Skill Points Available: 1".

Callie's voice interupted his thoughts. "So, getting yourself more acquainted with the system?"

"It doesn't seem too complicated. Just like a videogame," he replied, moving his eyes over the (x) in the top right before focusing back on Callie.

Callie looked confused. "A videogame? What's that?"

Leo shrugged. "A form of entertainment from my dimension. Actually, you remind me a lot of some characters from a game I know..." Leo trailed off.

Callie just shook her head. "Alright, now that you know how to use the menu, it's time to assign your AP and SP. Normally, someone from the same class would recommend what to level up, but since there are no other no-class heroes here, you'll have to figure it out on you own. Once your done, Argus will take you to the quest-giver, where you'll be able to choose a quest to your liking. I have other clients to take care off. Good luck hero!" Callie winked at him and walked off.

Leo was a little shocked that she just up and left him like that, but he realized that this was how it had to be done here. There was no way to breed good fighters if you treated them like babies and held their hands all the way. Especially for a no-class like him, he will have to figure everything out himself. Leo sighed, and then made a determined expression. "I will do whatever it takes to rise to the top here! I don't want to be stuck at the bottom of this world. Plus, if there's one thing I learned from all those wuxia novels and videogames, it's that strength is the only thing recognized in this kind of a society!" His eyes filled with resolve, Leo opened up the menu and looked at the panels in front of him, ready to start his journey as a fighter.
