When Jenny saw them walking in, there was an empty gaze in her eyes as she followed their movements.
She stared at them for a while before turning back to the cartoon.
Layla whispered, "She refused to talk to anyone since she woke up."
Staring at where her legs was supposed to be underneath the star filled comforter, Kai Xin said softly, "She's probably still in shock. Has she seen any child psychologist?"
"No. Her uncle refused to let her see any."
Kai Xin nodded. She doubt she would be able to do anything but it was worth a shot.
Thus, she went and sit next to the girl.
Without saying anything, she just sat there quietly and watched the cartoon with her.
The girl ignored her presence. An hour went by, then two hours, then three hours.
She noticed that the child would glance at her every now and then.
"Kai Xin, we have to leave."
Without trying to hide her intention, Kai Xin asked loudly so that the child can hear, "Can she leave the hospital with us?"
Layla nodded, "I can easily get her discharged."
"Let's bring her to the orphanage. It would be great for her to get some fresh air."
The girl showed no resistance when Kai Xin carried her and placed her on the wheelchair.
In order to avoid bumping into unpleasant people, Layla arranged for them to leave using a pre-arranged helicopter that was waiting for them at the rooftop.
Kai Xin gasped when she saw the helicopter with the Du Family's insignia,
"A bit over the top?"
Putting a sunglasses on, she shrugged, "I told Du XiAn that you might be in danger if we are to leave using a car. You know, being chase by baddies."
She then slipped a sunglasses on the girl and said, "Now you look just as cool as me."
Kai Xin shook her head. This mentor of hers was the best when it comes to taking advantage of DX.
They flew to the nearest helipad to the orphanage and used a limo to get there.
Throughout the journey, Jenny did not show any expression.
Kai Xin hoped that being with the other children would make her feel better.
The moment they arrived at the orphanage, a group of children ran out to check on the fancy limo.
Layla and the driver got out first to help Jenny onto the wheelchair.
The girl frowned when she saw the children that were surrounding her.
"Beat it, kids. You are scaring her, " said Kai Xin as she got out of the car.
When they saw her, they jumped up and down shouting, "Mama Zhen!"
Kai Xin smiled as she greeted them by their names. Then she picked up a child of about six and kissed him on the cheeks.
She signed while speaking,
"How's the hearing aid?"
The boy smiled shyly and called out, "Mah Mah Zen...Mah Mah Zen."
Jenny was somewhat interested when she saw Kai Xin signing.
An older boy who was standing behind the kids said, "Caleb is still learning to talk."
Kai Xin smiled when she heard the voice.
Looking at the direction of the voice, she smirked when she saw the boy, "Tian Le, you brat. Come here."
Still feigning disinterest, Jenny watched from the corner of her eyes as the boy walked towards Kai Xin.
She noticed that he was limping slightly and when the kids parted, she saw that he was using crutches and that he had only one leg.
Tian Le hugged Kai Xin tightly as he murmured, "Mum...I miss you."
Hugging him back, she said lovingly, "I miss you too, you little brat."
Glancing down at Jenny, he asked, "Is she joining us here?"
"Only until we can find suitable placement for her."
"Hi," greeted the boy. With a bright smile, he introduced himself, "I'm Zhen Tian Le."
Jenny ignored him and turned to stare elsewhere.
"Let's get her settle down first," said Kai Xin as she pushed Jenny into the building.
Along the way, Tian Le filled her in on every thing that happened since her last visit.
"Mum, my birthday is coming soon. Are you going to come and visit me?"
Patting silky black hair, she nodded, "I will find the time to come."
He grinned. Then he turned to Jenny and asked, "What happened to her?"
Kai Xin told him the truth.
Once they unpacked her stuff, she asked him to look after her.
"Also make sure Layla don't get into any trouble."
Layla snickered, "Me? Trouble? Noooooo..."
Tian Le chuckled. He met Layla once and despite her age, she can be quite playful.
As he watched Kai Xin leave, he knew where his Mum wanted to go and what she wanted to do.
...
Kai Xin went to greet Mrs. Wong, the caretaker of the orphans.
After making some small talks and once she settled Jenny's registration, she excused herself and went to the backyard.
Kai Xin slowly made her way to the row of maple trees that was planted in a tight row.
Glancing up, a gust of wind brought freshly fallen leaves that circled around her.
The reddish and golden leaves that was gently swept down by the wind landed on the ground and formed a various shades of golden and reddish bed.
As she watched two children played quietly by themselves at the end of the row of trees, she thought sadly, "I wonder if he has friends with him."
Her heart was as heavy as her footsteps as she made her way to the largest tree with a red ribbon tied on its trunk.
Touching the frayed end of the ribbon that was fading in color, she thought, "12 years...Is it time to change?"
Placing her forehead against the trunk of the tree, she can hear the soft whispers made by the wind blowing against the tree.
It was calling her.
It was blaming her for her lack of visits.
Indeed, it had been almost a year since she came.
With her eyes closed, she whispered, "Zi Han... Mummy is here to visit you. Have you been well?"
