"Who are the malicious rat-kin? Before humans encounter them, they are called by another name. When the first beast-kin syphoned out of the World Vortex, they scurry around making *tri* *tri* sound whenever they went and soon given the name, Gutri. If the Owlians are hated amongst all, then the Gutri are hated by the living for their horrendous deeds in the past 2 millennia.
When the ancient world is being swallowed by the world apocalypse. Who was once known as the Goddess of nature created the World Vortex at every four corners of the known world where all living being can settle and avoid the calamity but... Only the beast-kin manage to enter the vortex and the rat-kin ain't one of em."
"So why are you telling me this?"
I ask Mary who is resting in some sort of blanket who had their ends tied to a tree and form some sort of thin bed. Unlike before, her body now looks more solid through the one-piece dress she wears, in fact, she mirrored me in every aspect. The only difference is how I have my old short hair back while her hair is long enough to reach her knees and actually having a mature female body.
(Why did she make me look at that...)
"Hmm? Since you got killed by that rat-kin I thought you want to learn more about them. But a fair warning, the one you're fighting is... A fake. A product of human experimentation, lust and greed. The real rat-kin I told you are the true blood beasts that survived the apocalypse head-on to tell the tale. They are still causing doom in the shadows unseen. The ones here are merely offshoot descendants of the pureblood beasts to sum it all up.
"I see..."
I couldn't care less to her story as I rest upon the soft sands and cosy shore. Sitting on a large coast with the calming sound of the crystal blue waves hitting the sands.
(Is this what they call a beach? The coast I went with Sis Rubeca and May is only filled with rocks and ports. This is pretty nice).
I grab some of the sand and let it pour down my hand.
"Hey, Sova, come here. Sit beside me."
"Hmm?"
I followed her words and sit upon the hanging blanket. Feeling a bit unbalanced, it's still weird how you're seeing yourself right in front of you and with the same voice no less.
(Well the same new voice).
She starts brushing her feet and lay down on the blanket. Closing her eyes as she smiles and basking the warm sun beneath gaps left by the tree. I clasp my hands and wave my feet back and forth asking:
"So, am I dead?
"Nah, not really."
"Huh? I mean, everything went black and I feel like I can't wake up anymore. And this place-"
"Well duh, how can you wake up if you don't have any eyes to open or senses to feel. I mean if I didn't move your brain to your chest, you would've died!"
"Now I'm more confused."
I raise my feet to the blanket and sit with both arms and legs crossed. My mind feels like it's a mess. So many things happened and I can't seem to remember everything. I hold my head as I could hear loud ringing in my ear.
"Hey..."
Mary's arm wraps around me as she gives me a big hug.
"I know it's painful for now but don't give up. I'm always here to help you out."
"Thank you..."
I relax and loosen my body for her to hug me easier.
"Hehehe, hugs is really the best. And here's a head pat to make it better. There~ there~"
She pats my head and I can't help but smile at her comfort. Feeling my head being calmer, I look at Mary, or my own face asking:
"Mary, am I that weak? Am I so... useless?"
"Come on now, what makes you think that?"
"I feel like I don't belong anywhere ever since I got separated, even with Sis Yuwei, I still feel like an outsider."
"Well, that's pretty normal considering you haven't met them for so long. But aren't you trying your best to be of use?"
"And I failed didn't I?"
"That's because you never heed my clear warning signs! I thought the moment I told you you can't use your qi, you would avoid fighting no matter what! Aren't you someone who said violence is never the answer or something?"
I hid my head inside my legs saying:
"Ah... I guess you're right... I'm sorry. I'm just a hypocrite.
"What's with that pessimism. You're lucky enough that you got defeated by the perfect target."
"What do you mean?"
I pull my head out and look back at Mary. She pulls me down and makes me lay on the hanging blanket saying:
"Remember when your body becomes hot and you felt like your head becomes frenzy?"
"Yea, what's that all about?"
Mary raises her index finger between our nose saying:
"That, my friend is what will help you use your locked magic."
"Um... And how is that work?"
"We're going to need samples."
"Is this science talk?"
"That's right!"
"Can you please skip the science names and just say the summary? Unless it's Owlian science names."
"Awww... You're no fun."
I sit up, looking down at Mary laying down saying:
"It already feels really weird seeing my own face explaining stuff even I don't know about."
Mary gets up and crosses her legs saying:
"Basically, we're going to take some part of their body."
(Parts? Like arms and legs?)
"Isn't that horrible?"
"Well they are your enemies are they not? Since they tried to kill you, it's right for us to take something from them at least. Given that you don't want to kill them."
"But other parts can be like their hair right?"
I try to think of other parts of their body. But Mary brings her face close till our nose touch replying:
"What if they're bold? From up and down."
(Up and down?)
"Eh? Then... Then... Um... Nails?"
"So you want to rip their nails of their fingers? Damn, and here I thought you're pretty docile."
"What? No! I'm just going to... Ah! What about saliva?"
Mary's cheek reddened before she hides her face behind her hands replying:
"So you want a deep kiss? Pretty bold of you, even I'm embarrassed. Well, I guess with our looks, no one would reject us... Except for beings whose perception of beauty is different."
"No! There's no way I would kiss strangers! Stop joking around!"
"Then I have two solutions."
"What is it?"
Mary backs away saying:
"Blood and flesh."
"Huh? Isn't that the same?"
"Don't worry, all of the targets are Zerians. Think about this on the Zerian's view, they could be from all races, humans, beast-kin, sub-human, ancients, and et cetera. They all use magic, no matter how much you hurt them or take from them, they can always use magic to regrow them back. Unlike you ancient Owlians, they are practically immortal as long as you don't kill them. Magic, after all, is a wondrous thing."
"I'm scared..."
"Don't worry, since everyone... Wait, you have Libera's light right?"
"I guess? I mean that's what Sis Yuwei told me."
"Great, that means everyone except Owlians and neutral or lawful Libera's believers will all try to attack you. I'm not going to ask how you an Owlian got her blessing but... You'll be going to fight a lot of people."
"But didn't you told me that I shouldn't fight anyone?"
"That's when you can't use qi or magic! You don't even possess the latest tech from the empire either! Anyway, just make sure you take some parts of their body. Could be their fingers or eyes."
"I'm getting uncomfortable with this conversation. Wait, on another note, Saya told me that politics in the Confederation is that saying no means yes?"
"That's only in their higher convoluted politics. Lower problems and locals are pretty noble and normal. But I guess since you don't like fighting, I guess I can teach you how to use that to your advantage to avoid fighting."
"Hmm? Teach me?"
"Yes, let me teach you some things I remember about how this Confederation works. Maybe with this, you could really help your Sis."
"Really!? Teach me, please! It feels like no matter where I went, there's always conflict wherever I go."
"True, now the best way of not fighting is saying no."
"Um... I tried that already."
"You have to use tone, intonation and actions. Most importantly when someone mocks you, just repeat what they say about you... Let me just show you how."
Mary jumps out of the blanket causing it to shake along with the trees. She stands tall with her feet buried in the sand and before I know it, she already changes her clothes to something akin of a prim and proper blouse and skirt, her chest puffed out before shouting:
"You heard that electorates! This man is a shame to our country! He is a buffoon, a brainless ape who feeds on his own people hard work! I say we remove him!"
The entire scene changes into a room with many chairs pared with one table each. She stands in front of a large board, like 3 times bigger than the one May use to teach me.
"Eh?"
(Is this what they call a classroom? I see this is one of the books left at the convenience store... Feels kinda desolate. But...)
Seeing my own self mocking me and speaking such harsh words brings me nothing but discomfort and confusion.
"Now come on, just try to repeat what I mock you."
"Um... Um... I'm a buffoon? An ape who eats my own people? This is just stupid."
"Hehehe, good. Exaggerating his mockery and saying it's stupid. Now the next step."
"Wait, don't this feel like I'm taunting him?"
"Nah bra, by accepting your own fault it's like saying you'll change. Now, just be like, "Yeah, you're right, I should totally revoke my seat and give it to you instead. Take it, it's all yours~~~"
Mary explain with a very sarcastic tone and all I could do was reply:
"I feel like this whole thing is pointless..."
"That's right!!!"
Mary points at me with a stick from nowhere and walks close continue saying:
"This Confederation is a heap of a mess of a diabolical coalition of stupid treaties from all kinds of people that manifested from more than 2000 years ago and still piling up now! Nothing makes sense is the Confederation politics other than old people bickering for their own self-gain and ideology. So that's why honesty and ignorance is your best weapon. I mean just look at their own capital city! It's not even united under one banner!"
"True... And Saya did say honesty is but nonsense."
"Exactly! Don't think too much, just say what you want, let the world spin to your whims. That's what it means to work in the upper echelons of the Confederation. The Confederation is gigantic! Yet that word still do no justice to the sheer scale of this country. But this stuff is still too early for you anyway. So ignore the part on how to reply to mockery."
"Oh..."
(Then why did you teach me that in the first place if it's not going to be of use!?)
"Now, now, Sova, calm your face down. There's still much good news I have to give ya."
"Good news?"
Mary walks elegantly with her high heels and sits on the table before me with her legs crossed saying:
"Yes, I'm serious now. Even though those politics are stupid to you now. And the politicians or Sec Lords and Segmentum Lords in the Confederations do bad things. It's because they're thinking about the future of the ones they lead. Their methods are unforgivable but their actions are just to those who understand, after all, if they are corrupt and self-centred like everyone thinks they are, how is this Confederation still standing? In the end, all they ever wanted was for all of us to be better than before, if a system helps one but fails another, is already a faulty system already no? It's complicated adult stuff and you'll understand in the future."
Mary walks close to me and forces me to face her with both hands on my cheeks.
"So please, don't force yourself to learn what you're not supposed to yet."
"Huh?"
Surprised by her sudden advice and revelations, I can't help but be baffled once again.
"It's okay to be ignorant and useless now. You're young, you're supposed to have fun and made mistakes! No one is forcing you to learn! I mean, that's how the original owner of the memory went his life, he learned how to make illegal drugs with legal papers when he was still 17 for fuck sakes."
"What's a drug? Wait, I think May told me that as another term for forbidden medicine."
"Not really, most medicine, potions, salves, tonic, lotions and other medical products here can be considered drugs by natural or synthetic means but let's not delve too much about that and instead just relax, Sova.
Don't think too much now but when the time comes, just make sure you have your future plans ready when you are prepared to think for them. Only when you understand things more can you do it right. I'm sure you'll be able to learn everything yourself and become reliable for those who need them the most. I can promise you that. Learn at your own pace with a smile at your face."
"Mary... I... Thank you."
I can't help but fell into deep thought to her words...
(My future plans... I wonder what will I do?)
"For the other good news, now that you know you're alive. I guess I should let you know you can use your qi again, hooray!"
Mary lifts her hands high in celebration.
"Really!?"
I can't help but confirm her but Mary continues to try and raise her hand even higher replying:
"Yea! Not only that, but I also made sure you can now use a little of your magic too. So double hip hip hooray!"
"Are you sure!? How!?"
Baffled by her extremely good news. I can't help but be distrustful of her. Like the problem have been solved so easily!
"Wait, I thought you said that to unlock my locked magic is by getting body parts by those people my body reacts too... Does that mean..."
"That's right! While you're busy being dead. I took the liberty to use your body and defeat your opponents for you! Now, thank me!"
"I suddenly feel sick..."
"Ah, don't worry. She's still alive. And she tried to kill you so no guilt is given."
"I guess you're right... Thanks."
"Good, now promise me you'll take better care of yourself okay?"
"Yea, thank you, Mary. It seems I cause nothing but trouble for you. I wonder if I can do anything to repay you back. I mean, you're willing to listen to me and saved my life twice!"
"Aw shucks, well if you insist. I guess there's something I want."
"Go ahead tell me, I'm glad to admit you are a close friend of mine."
"Aw~, okay then..."
Mary closes her eyes to ponder when she finally reaches for an answer.
"I guess it'll be hard to explain. But when you explore the world, when your body reacts I guess that's when I want to meet you again."
"Oh yeah, how do I even meet you? By sleeping? Or something?"
"Well if you wish for it enough, I'll probably show up!"
"Oh! And one more thing."
"Yea?"
"After I get... Well the body parts, what am I suppose to do with it? Should I keep it and will it even fit?"
"That's what she said- I mean Ah... Well... You can use magic now, I hope you can learn how to use space magic when the time comes."
"Space magic? Like magic that deals with the spacing? Or closeness of some stuff?"
"Um, that's part of the magic but no. It's more specific like some magical storage where you can keep all your stuff in some pocket private dimension or something and that stuff would never rot or age in there. Unless you use time magic or some specification to space where time doesn't exist or can exist..."
"I don't really understand but isn't that like really convenient and cheating! Like you can just put all your food in there and not worry! And time? Someone can actually control time!?"
"Yea, like the Saint of Time from Libera's time pantheon. They never made a move ever since their creation, except for around 3800 years or so back during the beginning of the Liberation Era. I mean how do you think everyone is using the same calendar when the world is so big and filled with 4 main moons- sorry, 3 main moons and there is only one sun? And how some Zerian manages to be like 300 years old and still look like in their 20's."
"I never knew that! I just learn something so crazy! Wait, can I even learn magic like that!? And wait 3 moons? I thought there was 4! This is just getting ridiculous!"
My mind was ravaged by the endless possibilities of information and magic could bring. Mary pokes her stick at my cheeks saying:
"Of course you can but you'll need... The time to learn! Anyways you'll learn how to do that here. You don't actually use Libera's magic you know? So her rules don't apply to you."
"I see..."
(Me using magic? An Owlian using magic!? The thought alone baffles me but then I remember Sis Rubeca back at Central. When she goes crazy and uses some sort of magic to blow me away from the panel... And wait, I didn't think too much but there's other magic other than Libera? Oh wait, does that mean those spirit technique Rana is is considered magic? But if so, why does it affect me?)
Mary stands and walks in front of me, placing the stick at the small space beneath the board Now wearing a scholarly robe and square glasses with chains as if she got a promotion.
(I really don't want to look at myself. And where did she get the clothes?)
She pulls out some chalks from the edge of my eyes and starts to draw and explain saying:
"Now, before you go wake yourself up, let me explain about magic for you. For a recap, all of Libera's follower is blessed by her gift of freedom which means that all her followers are free to become what they want and not be restricted by their own mortal limitation. These people are usually called Paladins, Templars, Crusaders, Saints, Marines, Medica, Liberator Champions, Inquisitors and so on and so forth. Ironically, even though Libera's magic may be the most powerful but it's the most rarely use by everyone. Even during the age of chaos."
(I seriously don't understand half of the term she's using, the age of chaos? Where did all this information come from!?)
Mary draws what seems to be a lady opening her arms to embrace a bunch of people wearing the jobs she mentions. I shake my head to clear the thoughts and ask what's occupying my mind.
"Really? I'm pretty sure many people are her believers from what I can see."
"Hehehe, you really think so?"
"Well I mean, they all prosecute me one way or the other..."
"I guess you really are unenlightened like most of your brethren. Those are what we call fake believers or HERETICS! If they are true followers and received her blessings, they should have seen your light. Yet they don't and still prosecute you."
"Ah!"
Realizing there are more than meets the eye. I can't help but feel conflicted inside even if I knew deep down how different they were from Nicole.
"Yea, I mean one of my best friends is a true follower of Libera. I guess I should accept it all by now. It was from him that I learn to ignore the harsh treatment I received."
"Heh, you got a good friend. Ah, I know!"
"W-what?"
Surprised by her sudden remark, she walks close to me and places the tip of her stick at my shoulder saying:
"Let him teach you about magic."
"Wait, what!? Are you serious!? I mean, what am I even supposed to say to him? I suddenly come into his house saying,
"Hey Nicole, look! I can use magic now, so please teach me!?"
And didn't you say Libera's rule doesn't apply to me? Then how is he a user of her rule going to teach me!?"
Mary rests the stick on her shoulders replying:
"When did you learn how to be sarcastic? It'll be fine. You have her light and he's your friend is he not? Or is he something more? (And who the fucks names a guy Nicole?)"
"Well yes, he's my childhood friend and best friend above all..."
"Then even better! Just ask him a favour then, and let's not delve in the complex stuff and just go ahead and ask him. I'm sure he'll definitely agree. And besides, do you know how hard it is to actually make "friends" with her believers?"
"Everyone's been surprised by me having a friend from the Theocracy. I mean, is it really that surprising?"
"Even the original owner of this memory needs at least 4-5 years or so back then to establish a friendship with the countryside nun in his second try so that he could do some... My memories are hazy after that part but anyways! That's only thanks to some very specific reasons and circumstanced that's hard to repeat.
For comparison, it's like trying to establish a friendly relationship with a country you subjugated forcefully and commit genocide multiple times. And for another comparison, one of the reasons most heroes, rulers, and normal people who succeeded in their life is because they have a companion from the Theocracy. Heck, I heard rumours that the whole third world war or the Aologi Civil war is what's it commonly called, even had the Theocracy's meddling in it."
Basically put, they are like gateways to an epic, a legend, or a worldwide catastrophe. Just by having one person as your friend in the Theocracy can literally help you establish good relationships with everyone around you so it's like a must for everyone to have one as a ruler or if they wish for an amazing life.
But I'll tell you more about this next time we have free time. So dream about me when you sleep okay?"
"Wait what? You never even teach me anything new about magic."
"Oh! You actually paid attention in class? That makes me really happy, but bu-bye~~~!"
"Maryyyyyyyyyyyy!"
*************************************
"Eh?"
Before I knew, only darkness shrouded by thick dusty clouds surrounds me. Power unknown to me courses through my veins, not like the calm flowing qi but a powerful smashing power, just like back when I was fighting Sis Yuwei's mother, purple aura flows around my body as I felt the adrenaline pumping relentlessly.
In one of my hands is the soul weapon I use back at the train, and the other is a black double edge sword with its blade made out of qi. Before I realize it, the steel from the sword deteriorate. Fading like thick and dusty clouds by a gust of winds above. When I walk forth, trying to figure out what's going on or where I am. I discover one body laying before the pile of endless rubble. With her left arm missing, and legs squashed, she barely breathes through her nose and mouth. It was almost hard to tell she was the same rat-kin that defeated me.
"Hahahaha... You won... Got anything you want to say?"
She asks me while still looking up, trying to avoid looking at me.
(Honesty right? Maybe I should just say what I want for now).
"Sorry and please don't use sneak attacks anymore."
"Hahahaha! What kind of answer is that!? Heh, Unagi never went down here so I guess he must be coped with something too..."
(So... I guess that's all?)
"Okay... I guess I'll be going now."
I leave her alone and decided to head up where the light seems to shine, using my new strength, I jump up to the stairs and run. I banish my soul weapon and hold my broken Owlian steel weapon tightly.
(My body feels so light, I can see everything so clearly when it's so dark. I could smell so much better now and... And I could hear someone coming down here).
I stop mid-way and see two people arriving before me. One is Saya with her noble clothes filled with cuts all around and missing part of her clothes on her feet and arms.
(She must go through a lot).
The other is...
"Sova! Wait! More than that, what happened to your clothes!?"
Kokkan in his unique black armour covers his eyes in embarrassment and turn around as he asks.
"Kokkan, what are you doing here? And what are you talking about..."
I look at myself and realize the only coverage I have is the black cloth that hangs from my waist to my knees.
"Oh! My armour's gone... I wonder if Sis will be mad?"
Saya shakes her head saying:
"What happened to being embarrassed, Sova?"
"Well, that's because you ask me to show my private parts! Who wouldn't be embarrassed!?"
I puff my chest out and continue saying:
"Besides, I'm a man, what's there to be embarrassed to show my chest around? With this much coverage, it kinda feels like wearing my swimming trunks."
(Weirdly enough, I was forced to wear a shirt over it though).
Saya looks at me with a blank face replying:
"Woah... When did you learn how to talk like that?"
"What are you saying, Sova!!! Y-you... D-Don't you have any modesty!? Or SHAME!?!?!"
Kokkan retorted back loudly while still looking back. I ignore his antics while scratching my head trying to figure out why Kokkan is always so restless around me. Realizing something was missing. I confirm it again by holding around my hair and above my ears realizing...
"M-My headband! It's gone!"
"Huh? Headband? You mean the one with your name on it?"
Kokkan asks back when he turns around to look at me. I got close to him saying:
"Yea! Please, you have to help me find it!"
Kokkan face reddened more than an olanum before looking away.
"And Saya, please..."
When I look around, Saya is nowhere to be found. I try to search around asking:
"Kokkan, where's Saya?"
"Huh?"
Kokkan begins to search when he stares down below saying:
"Oh, she's down there."
I could see Saya walking closer to the dying rat-kin I fought.
(When did she get there so quickly?)
I quickly jump down, landing from one stair to another before reaching the depths once more. I walk closer to her saying:
"Saya, can you please help me find my- umph!"
My sentence was cut short when Saya pushes something on to my stomach.
"There, don't you lose it again. Especially the medallion."
As she lets go, I grab hold of the two items, my headband rugged and almost torn apart as my name seems to become loose and the medallion that seems to look good as new.
(It's better than nothing, I better ask Yuria or someone to help me fix this).
"Saya, thank you so much!"
I can't help but give her my heartfelt gratitude yet Saya merely smile a little as she fans her hands replying:
"Yes, you're welcome but good work on keeping this one alive."
"Huh?"
Saya walks closer to it and climbs the rocks so she can stomp her feet beside the attacker's head.
"Kaa-san, I never did anything wrong did I? And what's this? I felt a familiar presence... Are you perhaps a rat-kin? Sorry but I can't see, both my eyes got plucked out while fighting that monster."
"Jahsuquaoaak?"
Saya speaks in an unknown tongue once more and the attacker can only smile replying:
"Yeah, you really are one of us if you can speak our language... As for your question... Hauduaiaol..."
The attacker falls unconscious as she speaks in her language right at the end.
"What did you ask and what did she say?"
"Oh, just some general question like who instigated the crusade or whose leading it. None of your concern really. Just wait for a while."
"Okay, oh right!"
I look at my back, sensing someone there asking:
"Kokkan, why are you here?"
He ignores me and removes his feathered cloak with the insignia of a bird eating its own wing and wraps it around me. Thanks to his size, the cape feels a bit big like I'm wearing a robe while the feathers on the shoulders enveloping me feels like a scarf warming me up.
"This feels pretty nice. I wonder if I should try getting the same cloak like this? Who knew clothing could feel so nice..."
I can't help but smile as I feel the cosiness of Kokkan's cloak.
"Sheesh, Sova. Cover yourself, a lady with no shame will never get a good man to marry."
"But I'm a man though."
"Of course you are."
Kokkan ignores my remark as he ready his connected rifle-looking katanas.
"Anyway, you still haven't answered my question Kokkan."
"Hmm?"
"Why are you here? Is this Sis Yuwei's order?"
"Oh..."
Kokkan looks away as he ponders before looking back at me replying:
"Yes, this is her order after all. I AM your honour guard until she said otherwise right? I'm sorry I can't be by your side at times. Ever since you collapsed on the train, I lost sight of your qi and presence."
"Wait, how long have you been following us?"
"Only when we were travelling to the abandoned station and entering the train. After the train got cut off, it was a wild goose chase trying to catch up to you while trying to find you with your medallion. If it wasn't for meeting your rat-kin friend I would still be lost."
"Oh, well I'm glad you're okay. I mean you suddenly disappeared."
"Sorry for worrying you, Sova. Now we should leave and meet up-"
"Hold it right there pretty boy."
"Hmm? Are you referring to me? I'm pretty sure I introduce myself to you."
"Well too bad, I suggest you keep hiding. Our target is now being distrustful of Sova here. And if any more suspicious events happen, I'm afraid something unexpected may happen."
Kokkan looks at me with worry in his eyes before he looks back at Saya replying:
"I see... Very well, I shall follow your orders then."
Saya walks past me and tugs at Kokkan's cloak saying:
"You should return this too. It will reveal his presence."
"Are you serious!? She's practically naked without that?!"
Kokkan interjects quickly as he refuses vehemently.
"Then we'll just loot some corpse and wear their clothes. It's better than nothing. If you're going to commit, you better commit it fully!"
"Urgh! Very well... Forgive me, Sova."
Kokkan clench his teeth as he takes back his cloak while looking away. Feeling the warmth leaving my body I can't help feeling dejected.
"But I want to wear that..."
"If you really wish to wear it again, I can always let you borrow it when we return to the palace."
"Really!?"
"Of course, anything for you Sova."
"Thanks, Kokkan!"
I thank him with a smile and he peeks at me a little and nod before taking out a familiar necklace saying:
"I'm sorry but please stay still..."
(Ah that necklace, he said it was one of his family heirlooms when I visit his room. It's a pretty and simple necklace. I wonder...)
He brings it close and soon the necklace shines in bright blue light like last time.
"Don't worry, this is just me confirming something personal. Well then, please stay safe, I'll be close to you whenever you need me, Sova."
He answers me before I could ask and walks away, blending into the darkness. Saya sighs as she walks out of here and I follow suit, walking beside her.
"Magic's really convenient huh?"
I start wearing my headband and hold onto my medal and weapon.
"You don't need to tell me that."
Saya rummages around her small bag as she inspects her items.
"What's wrong? Are you running low on some potions or something?"
(Wait a minute! Doesn't that mean all the food I bought for Sis Fei and the currency card too!)
"Wait, Saya, you have to help me find my currency card- oof!"
Saya punches my stomach again saying:
"Good thing you remembered. I almost went with my bad habits there."
Saya opens her hands to reveal my card.
"Oh, thank you, again..."
With my hands full I wonder where I can place my stuff...
I push the card back at her saying:
"You can keep it for now Saya."
"Huh!? Wait, really!?"
"Yea, I mean it's not like I can keep it with my hands full. Nor do I know how to use it."
With a smile Saya taunts me saying:
"Aren't you afraid I might not return it to you when you forget and splurge in it?
"Nah, spending time with you I know I can trust you. And even if you do, I guess take that as me treating you then. Just make sure you share what you buy."
(This is kinda similar to Nicole's spendthrift habit where he would treat me and himself until he was satisfied with our combined allowance).
"Hmm... What's with you? If you say so, then I won't say no."
"Thanks!"
"Yea, you do look a bit better now."
"Better? Do I look sick before?"
I try touching my forehead and neck to check my temperature but Saya shakes her head replying:
"No you numbskull, you look like you finally realize something and release a load of your back. So what did you learn?"
Saya takes my card and keeps it in her bag before continue going up.
"I realize that I'm not supposed to learn how to do the stuff I'm doing now. So maybe when I'm done with this mission, I'm going to just relax and have fun, I guess..."
"Really? What about your family? Don't you want to find them asap?"
"Asap?"
"It means as soon as possible."
"Oh, well... I realize now I'm actually the weakest and useless among all of them. So, I guess I don't need to worry so much and just do it at my pace. I trust them enough that I'm sure they'll be okay!"
"I see, well I guess I'm glad you finally get some things straight. It's good you enjoy something you can but know that not everyone can do what you do... Now, why don't we end this invasion so we can go to the Turquoise Turtle then?"
"Yeah! And probably help me find some clothes to wear."
"True... Since I'm going to relax, why don't we enjoy some time together as we travel and shop in the Turquoise turtle Sector?"
"I just realize this, but won't it be late by the time we arrive?"
"Pfff Sova... Hey, wanna know something amazing?"
(A-amazing? Even by her standards?)
"Yes please!"
I raise my hand high like how I would like to know or ask something with May during my studies. Saya nods with a pleased smile explaining:
"Do you know that there is something called time zones?"
"Time zones?"
(The concept of time itself is pretty bizarre already to me).
"Yea, like how the time difference between the northern part of the Phoenix Sector and the Jaguars is actually two hours faster. So, basically, when we arrive, we're actually on time. And the time in from the jaguar and the Turquoise turtle is actually 17 hours ahead! Imagine that? It would still be..."
Saya ponders a while before saying:
"Yesterday Noon of afternoon when we arrive so there will still be a lot of time. So get ready for a lot jet lag! Is what you Owlians called."
(That's ridiculous! And wait, so when Sis Fei travels from the palace during breakfast it means she arrives by... Maths calculate... At midnight or so? What the hell is she late for then!? Is this what school is like!? Preparing from morning and arriving at midnight?"
"Wait really!? Then... One more question. I've been very curious about it."
"Oh, let this senior help you then."
Saya answers back with a smile of superiority as we arrive at the hole I fell.
"What's an hour? All I know is seconds and minutes. I mean I know how to count them, but if 1 minute is 60 seconds, how much is 1 hour?"
"I'm seriously so pissed at you right now."
*************************************
Between a stone and a hard place, a group of survivors forms the last line of defence against the incoming horde In a small pocket connecting them to two narrow roads. With most using kitchen knives, pitchforks, shovels, and sticks as their sword and spears, they tried to hold the line against the much better-equipped attacker.
"Everyone! We can do this! Just keep holding them back!"
A young girl wearing a servant's uniform leads everyone under the command of a broom.
"Tanwa, the levees won't hold out much longer! When will the bridge finish?"
One citizen wearing a bucket as his helm comes forth asking Tanwa for a situation but all she can reply is:
"We're already half-way there. Please hold them longer! Our earth mage is doing the best he can!"
"Ugh, our best fighter is wounded already and the others are discouraged. Do you think we'll make it? I mean most of us never learn any combat magic or train."
The young soldier expresses his worry to Tanwa but she held firm replying:
"Of course we will! Don't give up! I'm sure someone will come to save us! Like Lord Tannan!"
"I see... Then, what about the guests I heard so much about? What about him?"
"Guest? Oh, you mean her. I heard she's with my Lord, I'm sure they're doing their best too! So if you can speak, raise your arms cause here they come!"
"Wait what!?"
The soldiers who were resting immediately take up their arms and form a line. With Tanwa right behind them to give courage and support.
"We shall win! [Raise Defence], [Bolster Strength], [Energize], [Lessen Strain]! We shall not let them pass!"
Under Tanwa's enhancement spell, the whole line bathed in thick bright light and given enhancement to raise the odds of success. The rat-kin comes in droves, ignoring formation and rushing like a wave.
"Fire!"
*pew* *pew* *pew* *pew*
A volley from arrows unleashes their steel upon their foe in the rear. Bringing down multiple rat-kin on its knees, using this chance, the front line levies use their weapon to take down the weakened rat-kin. The exchange continued like this for a while since the rat-kin never changed their tactics, they keep on coming like a living wave. This time, stepping the bodies of their kin and starting to climb the walls to bypass the front line.
"There's too many of them!"
"Don't give up! [Unbreakable Will]!]
As the levy is about to lose hope, Tanwa cast magic to ease their minds panicked state. But another problem soon reaches them, spears rain down for the skies killing the rat-kin wave. But before it could reach the soldiers Tanwa raises her broom shouting:
"[Shielding Sphere!]"
The raining spears stop mid-air as if they are blocked by some invisible wall while some manage to pierce through halfway before the barrier vanishes and the spears fall to the ground.
"Grab the spears while they are still far! [Wall]!"
Tanwa may be a servant but she's been tutoring the same education as Tannan and went to the same school as her. Her talents as a support magician are said to be superior to even a seasoned mage even at her young age. It's clear as day that it was thanks to her efforts and presence that the civilians she carries were able to survive until now.
"Hahaha! We can win this!"
The soldiers who are gaining momentum and new equipment thanks to Tanwa's effort starts to become exhilarated by the outcome when...
*shatter* *stab*
"Argh!"
Barely dodging a fatal blow, a spear pierced Tanwa by her shoulder ans plunging half deep to the ground, pinning Tanwa down. A majestic spear different than before shattering her magic wall and destroyed their rising morale instantly.
"Tanwa!"
A crossbow wielder gets close to her and tried to pull it out, but his strength was not enough.
"Rrgggghhhh!!!"
The other crossbow wielder soon followed suit and try to pull it together but it was no use. Seeing the front was still clear of enemies, some soldiers went back to help but even their combined strength's still not enough.
"I was wondering why we didn't manage to break through, to think there was someone as troublesome as you."
A rat-kin who's clearly different than the others show up with an army behind him. From his gear, presence, and looks, this rat-kin is definitely a leader.
"Pull back! The bridge must be done by now!"
"What!? We can't leave you alone!"
One soldier braces up as he faces the new wave.
"That's an order! I'll hold him back somehow."
Tanwa tried to convince him but all she gets was rejection and the others gearing up to hold the line once more.
"Argh! We won't abandon you!"
"We'll fight till the end!"
The crossbowman readies their weapon and gets in position once again.
"You... You fools! You don't stand a chance!"
With a satisfying smile, the bucket soldier looks back at her replying:
"Hehehe~ this is the first time we heard you call someone like that. But too late, for that. Here they come."
"Wha!"
Tanwa forcefully pulls herself up so she can at least see leaving a trail of blood on the spear.
"[Royal Veil]! Huff, huff, huff..."
Tanwa cast her strongest support spell, A golden blanket wraps all the soldiers except Tanwa and the crossbow wielder in golden light. Tanwa begins to pant as she runs out of magic. The soldiers raise their spears and prepare for the impact but...
*boom* *cleave*
A large sound echoes through the narrow way, at the edge of the army where the eyes can't see. Rat-kin soldiers were being cut and thrown like rag-dolls amidst the confused soldiers. A mighty air blows from where the sound came. The immense killing intent sends even the leader of the rat-kin to grind his teeth in panic.
"Dammit! These stupid soldiers are just the same no matter what they wear!"
Ignoring the enemies right in front of him, he forces the army behind him to make way as he confronts the new opponent.
"Is that reinforcements?"
One of the soldiers whisper in surprise, but Tanwa capitalizes on this chance shouting:
"You heard that!? That's our reinforcements coming to save us! So keep holding them back!"
"Yes, we obey!"
*************************************
With newfound strength and my qi returning. My body felt like it's been reborn. My sight, hearing, skin, smell, feels even better. The rat-kin before me who were surprised by my rear assault finally brings a smile on my face as I thought,
(Finally! It's my turn fo return all the favours that have happen! It's my turn to sneak attack!)
Sensing an incoming projectile, I grab the approaching weapon easily as I felt like it's moving slowly. I look at what I grab and seeing it's a spear, my smile just keeps getting wider as I finnally have my weapon of expertise.
Using the new weapon at my right and the broken Owlian steel on my left, I continue my attack against the defenceless and panicking rat-kin who can't do anything thanks to the tight formation and spacing.
(I feel kind of bad...)
After leaving all my other important items with Saya and separating for our agreed objectives. I still don't even have a chance to get new clothing. I was forced to fight the enemy with only this thin cloth on my waist that covers from my waist down to my knees and two different weapons. My attack smashes the rat kin magic armour like it's made out of a cheap item.
(When we leave the cavern and as I was about to strip the clothes of some corpses, we saw people fighting here and Saya told me that if I can save her people it will at least gain Tannan's trust. So I travelled here as fast as I could. But to be honest, I guess I'm doing this for myself).
Another spear rains down from above, I decided to jump up by jumping the walls and grab the spears with one hand before raising my hand high, readying for my favourite slam attack.
"[Invincible Dancing Monkey's technique: grand slam]"
My weapon smashes all my enemies in the ground creating a huge sphere of qi around me. Breaking the spears and killing all in a mighty qi shockwave I never knew I had. Destroying the walls and widening the space of the road, the rat-kin quickly fled with their tails between their legs. Running past me and into the holes left after my attack devastated the terrain.
"This is my power? It's... Horrible."
(There's so much power flowing within me than I knew it. I feel so much stronger and since it's all so new, I have a really hard time controlling it. I should try and get used to it and control it properly so I don't cause incidents).
When the street cleared up, one rat-kin stands before me alone. From his looks and appearances, he is easily recognizable as a leader figure.
"I was suspecting a powerful foe but all I found was a fucking pervert! Don't fuck with me!"
His voice was filled with anger and frustration. I could tell the resentment and hatred he's exuding even though that armour he's wearing.
"Screw it, if this is all like this, then our wave has failed. Those stupid soldiers won't even follow my commands thanks to those Xuju! You..! I'll remember this place! And I'm going to make those overconfident Prophets pay!"
Confused by his sudden proclamation. He jumps on top of the building and fled somewhere I can't see. Happy that I was able to avoid another conflict, I hurried to where the survivors were and found them as I follow where the narrow road leads me. There I could see soldiers surrounding a place trying to pull a spear out. As I get close one person looks my way and his eyes spread wide open shouting:
"Aritwata! A naked lady!?" in Runician.
He shuts his eyes and stops pulling the spear. The other soldiers begin to look my way and immediately back away in shock while some had their face completely red.
"My Spirit Lord!", "Someone must have gone crazy amidst this!", " Wait do our district even have someone that beautiful!?" "Oh... I don't know what to say..."
"Huh?"
When the soldiers all back away, I realize the person impaled on the floor.
"Tanwa!"
"Wait, that voice... Who?"
Tanwa was lying on the ground weakened. As I got close she finally looks at me and her face burns red.
"Wha, wha, wha! What's going on!? Is my blood loss making me see hallucinations? Are you the spirit king's servant?"
"Sigh..."
I ignore all their comments and decided to break the spear shorter and pull Tanwa off the ground.
"Argh!"
"Oh, sorry! Did I do it too harsh!?"
Tanwa shouts in pain and I kneel down trying to see if she's going to be okay.
"What the!?"
The soldiers look at me with shock, but I support Tanwa who's getting up slowly by holding her back saying:
"Tanwa, are you okay?"
"Eh!? I-I'm sorry my lady! This lonely servant know you not! And, and, and, you should please wear something! You're a lady! You shouldn't reveal your body like that!"
(Oh yeah...! Tanwa never saw my face before).
"Tanwa, it's me Suowa."
Tanwa stares at me for a while before shouting:
"Huh? Wait, you're the lord Silencer!?"
"Huh, this pervert is!?"
"You idiot, don't say that!"
"You already said it!"
"Oh, no, I heard bad rumours that if we insult a high nobility, we're going to die..."
"Wait, what about with Tannan then? Ain't she considered a princess?"
"I see, in exchange for seeing a heavenly sight, we forfeited our lives... How pitiable."
"What are even saying now!?"
I shake my head and try to calm them down saying:
"Don't worry, I won't execute you or anything. Circumstances led me to look like this. Now Tanwa."
"Y-yes!?"
Tanwa panics and tries to get up, so I carried her by supporting her back and carrying from the back of her knee.
"There, I'll help carry you."
"Uwaa! W-wait, L-Lord Suowa yes?"
"Yea, oh, and I'll need some clothes to wear. My foe obliterated my armour in battle, so that's why I look like this."
"O-oh! I-I see. Then this lowly servant will provide you with what you need!"
Tanwa looks past my shoulder shouting:
"What are you looking at! Keep your eyes away from her you pervert! And aren't some of you married already!?"
"Y-yes, we obey!"
Tanwa points ahead of me saying:
"Just follow this road and you'll reach where the other survivors are. And before that..."
Tanwa removes her apron and wraps it at my neck so that it covers my whole front saying:
"There, you're a lady. You should not let anyone see your body so easily. Especially a girl as beautiful as you. Ah! W-wait I just realize! I-I can't believe a lowly servant like me dare lecture, someone, with such high status as you! Please forgive me!"
Tannan tries to bow her head down even as she was still being carried. I nod saying:
"It's fine. I mean, I'm a man after all. There's no shame in showing my chest."
"Huh?"
Tannan stares at me with confusion when I finally realize...
(Wait, didn't Saya told me that I'm supposed to pretend I'm a woman so that I wouldn't tarnish my Sector's reputation? Oh boy...)
"Wait, never mind. I'm a girl after all."
"I see... I don't understand your situation but, I'll do my best to support you Lord Suowa!"
"Thank you. But is your shoulders okay? Has the blood stopped bleeding?"
"Oh, of course! I'm fine. Thank you for worrying me O great Lord."
(Oh, so it's true what Mary told me...)
"No need to exaggerate, just call me Suowa. It'll make communication easier."
"I see... At least let me call your Lord too... My heart is just not ready- I mean please let me consider! After all, you saved not only my life but many as well."
I continue walking ahead saying:
"We'll continue our conversation when we reach your group."
"Eh? I mean as you wish, Lord Suowa. And one more thing, I only have my servant clothes... If you wouldn't mind wearing that then I..."
"I don't really care, as long as I'm dressed, I'm okay..."
(Endure it, Sova, you just gotta wear this once).
"Really!? I mean, of course!"
Tanwa looks down for a bit as she ponders something. I continue travelling the ruined streets and realize...
(I wonder what Tannan and the other are doing?)
