Chapter 3 - Enough Chances

Nathan had felt they laid there for hours before Kristen could finally rein herself in. His clothes were wet and warm which felt awkward, and having Kristen on him did not make it any better.

Kristen rubbed her eyes before sitting up. She then helped Nathan up, in doing so their eyes locked for a moment. Her eyes still red, but her face said it all.

Motivation. Conviction.

He wasn't sure what she thought specifically but he quickly shook his head. "Kristen you don't have to. I know what your thinking. After what I did I tried to cut ties with everyone. You should know that." He shuffled himself in place and lifted his legs onto the bed. Meanwhile Kristen took a seat next to him on the bed.

"Nathan I made a mistake once. I can't leave you again." This time Kristen was shaking her head, obstinate.

There was silence again between the two. Nathan then burst out laughing abruptly. "It's just too funny. Why do you sound like a cliché lover in a romance novel? What a gross line."

"Nathan…I'm serious here." Her tone obviously not enjoying the joke.

"Yeah and so was I." Kristen thought his smile seemed to glow a bit.

"Besides don't you have a boyfriend. You got better things to do than hang out with a crippled potatoe. I can't even be a french fry anymore. Look my legs are all soggy." Nathan then tried to wiggle his own legs with his arms.

Kristen couldn't help but smile a little watching him fumble around. Her heart was shaken at the thought of him admitting his own circumstance while still having that happy-go-lucky tone he's always had.

"But your parents are taking care of you right? Uhhh …Nathan?" When she posed the question she saw him tense up, no longer bothering with his legs.

His whole aura changed and the mood inside the room became gloomy.

"How'd you know I was here, was it sis?" He seemed to avoid the topic but not wholeheartedly.

"Yeah Danielle said something happened to you and I should visit. When I first heard from her about you I couldn't believe it. Even now I still can't." Kristen could hear the concern in his voice.

"Figures, she's the only one that comes around anyway. I also hope our little sis will be fine knowing I won't be around anymore." Nathan looked up before sighing.

"Whoa wait what's that supposed to mean exactly?" Kristen asked.

"It means what it does. Keep it simple, I'm not their son anymore. At least that's what my dad decided." Nathan said casually.

"So they threw you under the bus?" Kristen felt even hurt herself.

"Wrong metaphor but I wouldn't mind it literally." He chuckled.

"Thats…you know what I meant. That's fucked up."

Kristen blurted out.

"Ayyy. That's the Kristen I know." Nathan laughed again. "Been awhile since I heard you curse." Nathan looked unfazed to Kristen. As if this wasn't the worst possible outcome.

"Then all the more reason I should stay. You need the support." Kristen replied. She couldn't believe how cold his parents are to just cast him aside during a time like this. 'Maybe his father was as terrible as he told me back then' she thought.

Shaking her head of her thoughts she focused onto now, the past was the past, but now she can do something about it.

"Kristen, theres a reason why I never told anyone of my problems. Afterwhile they leave, whether its intentional or just drifting apart. I've taken enough chances" Nathan said. He seemed to want to say more but paused and looked out the window. Kristen waited, wanting to hear what he had to say.

The moon was high and bright, from Kristen's perspective it looked like Nathan was glowing.

"Anyone who gets involved just gets hurt. I can't keep doing that to anyone anymore. So please, truly forget about me this time. Okay?" he finally said. This time a tear came down his cheek, but since he was facing the window Kristen didn't see it.

Before she could say her piece, the nurse came in to tell Kristen visiting hours were over for the night. Following the nurse Kristen hesitated when she got to the door. She turned around briefly saying. "Nathan…I'll be back tomorrow alright? That's a promise." She said then continued on her way out.

As they left Nathan listened to their footsteps echo in the hall. Now that he was alone he shifted himself to a better position and put his hands together. It looked as if he was meditating. A second later a light flashed and vanished, almost like a visual effect. In truth Nathan launched a electric pulse. That pulse began expanding faster than human eyes could track. Something he wouldn't normally do in this world but he had noticed something he couldn't ignore.

Since it was getting late, the hospital was less active than it used to be, and the sillouheutes of people passing by steadied to a halt. Yet the pulse Nathan let out did not stop within just the Hospital. It continued and covered a four mile radius. To naturally everyone, they would not notice a thing, but one figure felt the pulse and stopped walking. A man dressed in a plain black suit and tie stood alone in the night. A single lamp post luminating his vicinity.

As he felt the pulse come into contact with him, a trace of fear and anxiety swept over him. Yet just as fast as it came, it left. And so he resumed walking. Whether he lived or died did not matter but he must deliver the message. Even if it killed him.

But before he could finish his step a figure appeared before him. Sitting in a wheel chair dressed in more casual wear, Nathan looked at the man before him. The man was taken aback and staggered a few steps back fear stricken. Nathan only kindly smiled in return.

He waited. Seeing as Nathan was not moving anymore the man breathed a sigh of relief before regaining some semblance of composure.

"Are you Nathan?" The man asked carefully.

"Depends on who's asking. I can be a lot of things to a lot of people." Nathan replied.

"My apologies sir, I am merely a servant bearing a message." The man could feel Nathan's aura around him. He could feel his senses scream danger yet there was nothing he could do. His life was in Nathan's hands.

"The message then." Nathan smiled lightly. His aura slowly receded back relieving a lot of the pressure on the man. The man took a deep breath and felt the sweat drenched on his back. Regaining what was left of his composure he stood straight as best he could while clearing his throat.

"Sir, my lady will be visiting tomorrow. She is already en route and would like to speak to you about some 'Business opportunities'. Formally she is asking for some time, and I'm hear to receive a response in person." The man then bowed. While he did change his master's words a bit to sound more polite. With the situation at hand he did not believe he would walk out alive if he used the same words she did. Besides the fact that he was just a messenger, the power Nathan had demonstrated briefly awed him.

When he first heard about the Madam going to find someone to conplete a business deal, it was unheard of. She was a prominent figure in their society and very few would warrant a personal visit. Thus he volunteered to be the messenger.

The man was, to say the least, shocked that Nathan was the person his Madam was looking for but also with the power he had. The servant had done his own research and it did seem as Nathan was only a normal human. 'So where did this power come from?'

"Sure I guess. She'll know where to find me then. Just don't do anything stupid while you are here." Nathan replied. He saw the servant was thinking when he spoke but paid no heed. Turning around to leave Nathan just casually waved one hand before vanishing again, a fading light trailing like an afterimage.
