Chapter 2 - The Lumber Jack

Spawning on a random rock, Wendell spoke,"Seriously? I actually got spawned on a random rook?"

After roaming around from a bit, he started scribbling in boredom:

________________________________________

(Random rock number 1,069,799,107 /7,611,710,998,101,114)

106 979 910 7 ??? 761 171 099 810 111 4 ???

701 997 960 1 ??? 114 101 899 017 116 7 ???

________________________________________

"Hmm, well the most repeated numbers are 9, 1, and 7.

Deciphering the code doesn't work... there really isn't a way to incorporate

a secret message with a single digit number in combination with three digit number...

meh I have time to play around, so might as well play around with this number~"," he thought before scribbling a bit more.

"Nope~, well what can I do~," he said as he looked around once more, this time he spot a large group of people.

"Hmmm~ Let's head over there, more people are there~," he said as he closed the notebook and flew a short distance.

"Young adventurers, I request your attention and assistance,

wolves, boars, bears, and the like have occupied the forest and we humble lumber jacks can not make a living especially with the duke's increased taxing and tyranny," spoke a man of medium build who seems to exude aura of kindness.

But after seeing this man well over his fourties, Wendell had to slowly back away due to the nature of his Gerontophobia.

He refused to walk any closer to man, but chose to stay around the players after hearing some interesting conversations.

"Hey why don't we take this quest? Hmmm? That guy is a Lumber jack and they requested for warriors to clear out the woods," asked a kind looking orc. "Well from the information I gathered, the forest is of relatively low level. This quest probably serves as a low level quest in order to introduce players to the woodlands which is inferior to the hunter's quest line that would additionally give you some reputation," said a warrior who seem to lead the group.

Another group heard and interrupted," Don't get tricked, hunter reputations don't have much benefits if you aren't planning on being one for the long term because they only give benefits for hunting in the woods where you got the reputation and discounts where you sold the most materials to."

"That's still pretty good," the warrior said, suspicious. "Don't you know? If you do the Lumber jack's quest and quests of other common npcs, you can actually get discounts in almost all the commoner stores and even some in other cities where the relatives of npcs here live."

Wendell was highly attracted by this conversation, he didn't want to do simple monster clearing quests as his primary purpose was to learn the lore of the world, but he did see this as an opportunity to make guides to sell to other players.

He stood there even after Lumber Jack retired to the hut, making a guide of tips that he had heard and speculations he made upon after hearing numerous rumors and gossip.

For solo players, it's quite recommended that one join the hunter's group because the npcs will serve as good companions, however with a large party, many quests become easier and possible.

With a good party, it's a good idea to take up quests with locals as they could help you get discounts and connect you with quest givers.

Avoid quests involved with the duke as the duke is heavily corrupted and as a result many knights can enforce players to pay tax of amounts to their liking.

It's better not to offend the noblemen and their children because they use their power to bully and destroy the opportunities to survive and complete quests in this city.

If you do offend a noble, quest giver Lumber jack has a son that runs a gang whose purpose is to attack nobles, by joining them you can start the faction war quest.

Taking the noblemen side will allow you to be exempt from some taxes, however you're doomed to have constant checks and high probability to losing your high quality equipment for "offerings to the duke."

"Hmm, this is a good place to get information..." He thought as he stared at the lumber jack... well not for long as his Gerontophobia kicked in.

But having realized that lumber jack seem to be the key of the town, Wendell starts to stay around Lumber jack's house wandering away occasionally as the lumber jack moved closer to him. He never left far in order to hear as much as possible from npcs that hang around the Lumber jack's abode. And eventually due to this close proximity to the Lumber jack's house, he ended up overhearing an argument.

"You should stop running the gang, nothing good will come out of offending the nobles,"said the Lumber jack.

The lumber jack's son mumbled in reply,"...coward..."

"I don't want to hear that from you, do you know how much pressure I have to deal with because of the nobles," the lumber jack replied with a tone of anger.

"You could've fought back with me... we could crush the nobles," the son replied.

"NO...I...WON'T...FIGHT...AGAIN," the lumber jack spatted out each word angrily.

"COWARDICE, THIS IS WHY YOU COULDN'T SAVE MOM," yelled Lumber Jack's son.

"No no no, I trie--"The Lumber jack tried to say in reply.

The son interrupted obviously not caring what his father had to say,"WHAT A GREAT KNIGHT YOU WERE, YOU SACRIFICED MOM AND RAN."

"Please stop..."the lumber jack mumbled as his hand covered his face.

The son obviously annoyed of his father's actions said, "NOT TO MENTION THAT IT WAS ALL YOUR FAULT THAT THEY GOT IN. IT WAS ALL--"

*SLAP*

"SILENCE, I DON'T WANT TO HEAR OF THIS AGAIN," yelled the Lumber jack in anger.
