Chapter 26 - Cliffhanger

Om's eyes widened as felt he something. He immediately turned his head and looked at Saksham suspiciously. After a few seconds, his face once again changed greatly. But this time, it was filled with excitement. He immediately jumped up like a madman and rushed towards the road, ignoring what the crowd did to the culprit, and called for a taxi. He then picked up Saksham's body lightly and placed it on the back seat of the taxi and quickly told the driver to drive to the nearest hospital.

Sitting on the first seat, Om continuously looked at Saksham's body agitatedly. Right now, he was feeling very grateful to himself and hateful of himself. This was a very contradictory feeling in itself.

He was feeling hateful of himself because without even thinking and examining, he had thought by himself that Saksham was dead. How can he do that? He should've really checked it himself first only then should he have done or thought about doing anything else. He was also grateful because if he didn't come back now and placed Saksham on his lap for a while, he wouldn't even have known that he was still alive; albeit barely.

And due to this now, only one thing was revolving in his head. That thing was that doctor telling him that he was too late to arrive there. If he had brought Saksham to the hospital a little earlier, he could've been saved.

This result was the one which made Om's heart beat like drums and even thinking about this made his hands and feet get sweaty and cold. He couldn't think of anything else but this situation happening repeatedly in his mind. He couldn't help but close his eyes and breathe heavily. But whatever he did, the smell of the blood coming from his clothes and the back seat once again reminded him that all this was his fault. The agonizing pain he felt thinking of this made his face distort greatly.

The driver was also worried at this time. Initially, when he saw Om coming to his taxi with a body, he thought that Om was a murderer. But after Om explained the situation briefly, his blood started boiling righteousness and he immediately allowed Om to put Saksham's body in the backseat in the heat of the moment. At first, he didn't realize anything.

But later, he saw that there was quite a lot of blood on Saksham's body which had yet to dry. And he also saw the blood from his body staining the backseats of the taxi. Now, he was afraid that the blood wouldn't come off even after a wash. He decided that he would also ask for the money for the backseat but he would give them a discount too.

Om, at this time, was clenching his teeth and continuously looking at the back seat. Every second was like an hour to him. He couldn't help but continuously rush the driver to drive even faster. He kept looking out of the window anxiously.

After about 25 min, they reached the best hospital in the country, AIIMS Hospital (All India Institute of Medical Science Hospital). Although it took more time to get there than getting to the nearest hospital. But Om believed that hospitalizing Saksham here would grant him a greater chance at surviving. So, that was why Om told the driver to come here. And fortunately, there was no traffic in the way and they could easily reach there.

After stopping at the entrance, Om hurriedly got out of the taxi and immediately ran inside the hospital to call for nurses and a stretcher. Very soon, 2 nurses and 2 ward boys came out running and carefully placed Saksham's bloodied body on the stretcher and then hurriedly carried him inside the hospital.

When they got inside the hospital, Om could smell the fragrance of medicine and disinfectants. But he didn't care about it. At this moment, he was waiting for the doctor's reply, who had come to check the situation of Saksham.

The doctor had a stethoscope and he was doing his thing which Om didn't know. After a moment of heavily silence, the doctor's face changed and he said in a heavy tone, "The situation is very bad. We have to take him to the ICU immediately. You go and fill the relevant document in the reception if you are the family member of the patient. Or if you're not the family member, please urgently call them and tell them to come and fill the documents soon."

Hearing this, Om tensed nerves were tensed even more. He could barely say anything at this moment. He just stupidly nodded and watched as the nurse and the ward boy took the stretcher inside the ICU. After standing there stupidly for a while, Om came back to his senses and hurriedly took out his phone and called Boss Ayush and told him the situation.

Hearing how bad the situation was, Ayush also hurriedly hung the phone and called Saksham's family and told them the situation. Then, after once again hanging the phone, he immediately left for the AIIMS Hospital. Although Saksham was not the successful stand-up comedian, but he was still a person working in his company. The least he could do for him was give him a visit at this time.

After half an hour, he also reached the AIIMS Hospital. He called Om and told him that he had reached the hospital. Hearing this, Om ran quickly to the entrance and met Ayush. Seeing Om's pale and distressed face and the dirty clothes, Ayush felt that Om was very pitiful at this time.

He knew the whole story that Saksham was injured so heavily and was on the verge of dying because of Om. And he knew what Om was suffering through right now. After all his family also….

Ayush shook his head and patted Om's shoulder and comforted him, "Don't worry. Everything will be alright." Besides this, he had nothing else to say so he took Om and sat on a steel bench placed inside the hospital.

Soon after, Saksham's whole family reached the hospital. The family was in tears as they entered the hospital. When Om saw the family, he was stunned. He was stunned not because the whole family was crying, but because the family was not a whole. There were only two very old couples and a girl of about 17-18 years old. Looking at the old couples it was definitely not the parents of Saksham. Then, who were they?

As if seeing through Om's mind, Ayush secretly murmured in his ears, "Saksham doesn't have parents. They died both died soon after Saksham's sister was born. Since then, Saksham had been living with his grandparents. After growing up, he did various things to earn some livings to send his sister to a well-off school and let his grandparents have peaceful lives in their old age."

Hearing till here and seeing the red eyes and the devastated expression of the whole family, Om wanted to bang his head into the wall right now. Because of him, a family was going to be destroyed. Just because of him....just because.....

Om was feeling so grief-stricken at this moment that he didn't know what to do. No words came out of his mouth nor did he move from his position. The feeling of guilt right now was crushing his whole existence. The whole world was getting dimmer and dimmer for him. The blue skies didn't look as beautiful as it did today and Om didn't know why he was having an urge to touch them. He felt that if he jumped from the rooftop of the hospital, he would definitely reach them.

Om's face was getting paler and paler by the moment and he didn't notice it. He was still lost in his dreams as he stood there, in the middle of the corridor stupidly. Many times Ayush called out for him, but it was as if he didn't hear anything so, Ayush also shook his head and sighed a little.

After who knows how long, the lights above the ICU suddenly went out and the door opened with a *click*. A doctor with a mask on his face came out.
