Chapter 7 - Act 7: Deadly Rescue [I]

Day: 1

Time: 4:47 P.M.

Location: Kirishima High School - Rooftop - Clocktower

Time until Nighttime: 1 hour and 13 minutes left

--------

Holding the makeshift javelin in his hands, Kyosei looked below to ensure that he was not going to throw the javelin somewhere inaccessible.

"Are you sure this plan will work Kyosei?" Souichi is still not sure about their situation.

"Should be. If it does not work, then we will have to make some workaround, but if it works, then it's good."

"I don't like the sound of that..."

Chie who was listening while still busy with her examination of the corpse chimed in. "Stop being pessimistic, Souichi. We have no other choice on this matter and we all need to make do with what we have right now.

"Ugh, you can't blame me, Miss Chie! Considering that we only have one shot in this and no retries, this is far too reckless in my opinion!" Souichi complained.

"So what if this is our only chance? Just like you said, this is our only chance and if we waste it idling around and hoping everything comes to pass, then we would just be wasting time. I doubt anyone will proceed to rescue us. In the worst-case scenario, the government will just issue a carpet bombing in the infected areas, regardless of whether there are survivors or not. So if you don't want the girls to die or get involved in some bad and sh*tty practices, then bear with me."

Once Kyosei is done talking, he grabs the makeshift javelin and immediately throws it below the building. As the Javelin falls quickly, the rope quickly follows the path of the javelin until it stops.

"Alright, looks like it is now secure below. I will go to the cafeteria and grab a few things to eat there. Considering that the zombies will no longer need to eat regular food, there should be plenty of that stuff around. Then, I will retrieve the javelin I have thrown to the ground and carry it to the area where the girls are and let this get secured. Your role here is to watch over the situation on the target site. Once you saw me secure their route, tie the rope tightly in the pillar so that we can safely use the rope ascender and lift them out of there, got it?"

Souichi nodded. Despite having second thoughts on the plan, he is not going to just let it fail. He can't let his sister and girlfriend get killed in the process.

"Watch the fort while I am gone. Make sure that the door is locked. I will open the door's lock myself with a lockpick. Keep yourselves safe here."

Kyosei readies the bag he will be using to carry the supplies of food. Since the backpack he was using to store firearms was not ideal and not that big, he decided to borrow the one that Chie was using to store some of her tools. Chie didn't mind him using the bag so his container was secured.

As for the weapons, thanks to the holster and grenade bandolier that Kato included in the bag, he carried all the grenades and the revolver with him as a panic weapon in case things got really hairy. It is not his primary weapon and he is not great at using guns. This is only if he is pinned down or he needs to kill a zombie as soon as possible which hopefully, never happens. Ammunition is, after all, a precious commodity and he only has a limited amount.

"Let's get this started then."

Day: 1

Time: 5:00 P.M.

Location: Kirishima High School - 4th floor East Wing to West Wing Hallway

Time until Nighttime: 60 minutes left

----

Looking at the time, Kyosei only has 60 minutes left before night strikes the clock but that should be plenty enough to finish what needs to be finished for the day.

Since the hallway that they passed earlier was cleared out, the only thing that is blocking his way is the dead bodies of the zombies they have killed. The smell is getting bad but there is no way to stop the smell as there is no time to even clean the place. Just not staying in that place would be a better outcome.

Thanks to the empty hallway, Kyosei had an easy time navigating towards the west wing. Of course, considering that the west wing is not cleared, he will need to be careful.

The cafeteria is located on the 4th floor of the West Wing and since the East and West Wing hallways are connected to one another, Kyosei has no problem with its access. He only hopes that the cafeteria is desolate from any zombies or any survivor who would be hoarding food. He might be capable of violence but he hopes that he has no need to resort to violence against humans just yet. Not today at the very least.

Opening the glass door slowly, Kyosei looked around and listened closely for any noises around the area. He didn't want to suddenly get jumped out of nowhere. Seeing no movement, Kyosei crouched down and started to make his way towards the cafeteria.

The cafeteria is the busiest place every lunchbreak but now, it is lacking life and is now carrying a dreaded silence, and the scattered food trays, spoons, and other utensils make the place a bit sad to look at. But there is no time for any sort of nostalgia trip. Time is ticking.

Kyosei sneaks through the cafeteria's counter and peeks behind the glass cabinet and just like he expected, there was someone there. Seeing as there was no movement or anything from that person and considering how bloody the person's pants were, Kyosei immediately concluded that the person standing there was no longer a human.

He hadn't made a move yet and looked at the surroundings first. He needed to make sure that this guy here was the only one and no one else. And his move is correct. Behind the guy is the female server of the cafeteria that many called the "server lady" to be standing with the guy. Half of her face is peeled away and a few of her former face seems to have been ripped forcefully. Blood is still flowing in her face, making her look hideous to look at.

And it seems there are a few people in the kitchen as well but since he can't see the kitchen well unless he goes inside, then he can't just tell how many are present. To make his life easier, Kyosei grabbed the plastic tray that currently resting on the counter and threw it to the opposite wall, hoping the zombies near the counter and the kitchen would be attracted to the sound.

THUD! CLANG!

He made sure to throw the plastic tray hard, causing it to make a loud noise and as a result, his plan to divert the attention of the infected people to the noise is a success.

The zombies quickly made their way to the source of the sound. Kyosei made sure to observe properly and make sure that there were no more zombies in the kitchen. Once he was sure that there were no more zombies lingering in the kitchen, Kyosei didn't waste his time and slip past the zombies. There, he grabbed all the canned goods he saw that were still not open that were all placed on the cupboards and cabinets. He made sure to do it quietly as the zombies remained occupied on his previous diversion and with the help of multiple zombies, the tray he used was being stepped on and causing a lot of noises that contributed to the diversion and making the zombies stay on that part of the place.

Aside from canned goods, Kyosei also took water bottles with him and stuffed the bag as much as he could. Once he is quite sure that they are good enough for everyone and not too heavy to carry around for a while, Kyosei closes his bag and quietly slips off again from the cafeteria, leaving behind the zombies to continue with their problems.

As to why Kyosei didn't kill the zombies, it is a waste of time and there is a big chance that the zombies will start calling for more allies. He is still unsure how those zombies work, but he doesn't want to keep risking it.

Now that his side objective is done, Kyosei's main objective is now the one he is focusing on. His time is running out and the natural light is now slowly disappearing. Things will not look good if he is a few minutes late.

Day: 1

Time: 5:13 P.M.

Location: Kirishima High School - Ground floor

Time until Nighttime: 47 minutes left

-----

Kyosei made short work of the stairs by casually skipping them by jumping to the turn, allowing him to reach the ground floor without problem.

It was also fortunate that there were barely any zombies around on each floor that heard his loud footsteps but even if they did hear them, they would be too late already as he was already far from the source of the sounds.

The Ground Floor has a few zombies wandering around the main entryway. They are not that hard to deal with, but that will lessen Kyosei's time, however, there is no way for him to sneak away from that place without getting into a confrontation. But instead of a full head-on attack, Kyosei decided to use this chance to see how perceptive each zombie was so far.

He sneaks towards the nearest zombie's back and stays there, with the kitchen knife he found inside the kitchen. Even though he is nearby, the zombie does not turn around, which means the zombie is not able to smell him at all. He also made a mental note of the zombie that was facing his way but not attacking yet. A few seconds later, the second zombie looking at him turned in the other direction, allowing Kyosei to understand the zombie's behavior a bit. It isn't set to stone just yet, but he is now able to understand its behavior a bit better.

Now that he tested it already, Kyosei stood up a bit to grab the head of the zombie before stabbing its temple with the kitchen knife in full force, eliminating the zombie immediately. Once he did the task quietly, he put the zombie down to the floor, which helped stop triggering the zombies.

He repeated this to the other close-proximity zombies again, effectively dealing with them all in quick succession while maintaining stealth. Once he had eliminated all of the zombies in the vicinity, Kyosei immediately opened the glass door slowly to not make a sound and moved out in a hurry. He needed to reach the location where the makeshift javelin he made had landed. The sooner he arrives at the location, the better.

Thankfully, with most of the zombies busy trying to make a meal out of the people inside the Gymnasium, the way towards the makeshift javelin is pretty much empty and barren. But he is still not getting himself killed by thinking there aren't any threats. As soon as he finds one shambling zombie, he quickly dispatches it before moving once more. One less zombie to worry about.

As soon as he arrived over at the back of the gym, the makeshift javelin is currently pierced on the ground. And on the gym's broken window, he saw a few people peeking out of the window. One of them is clearly showing dark violet hair, meaning that's none other than Miyuki.

"Psst! Hey!" Kyosei tried to catch their attention. Fortunately, one of the girls catches his calls and points him out with the others.

"Kyosei!" Miyuki quickly took notice of him.

"Open the window. I need to tie this one and secure this. We will be using this to get to the area we are staying."

Miyuki and the others nodded. Although the window is a bit small, it is enough to squeeze in someone and climb out of it. With the girls opening the window, Kyosei ordered them to stay out of the window and the ground below as he would throw the javelin which the girls immediately agreed.

Since it wasn't too low, the window and the ground, Kyosei didn't have a hard time throwing the javelin inside.

"Tie it up and secure. While you guys do that, I will climb there."

Miyuki and the others did not waste time. As for Kyosei, he quickly climbed the gymnasium. Using the knife he found in the cafeteria, he used it as a pick to aid on his climb in case he couldn't find anything to hold onto. It didn't take him long to reach the gymnasium's window and enter it. By the time he entered the room, Miyuki, another girl he didn't recognize, and a young man who had an insignia on his collar to be a first-year student tying the rope.

"Kyosei!" Miyuki tries to hug Kyosei only for him to quickly dodge her in reflex, making the latter instead dive to the floor.

"Where are the others? You said in the call other people will be coming along."

"There are still a few of them over there and are still helping the barricade to keep the place intact," Miyuki explained.

Kyosei turned to look at the girl that helped Miyuki. "Are you the girlfriend of Souichi?"

"Y-yes! The name is Sena Kobayashi. Is Souichi with you?"

"Indeed and he is also looking for his sister, where is she?"

"She is helping with the barricade process. Shall I call her?"

"Later. How about you, boy?" Kyosei turned his attention to the first-year student.

"Nejima Kaneshiro."

"Alright. Miyuki, you inform the others that we will be escaping soon enough. I will escort these two to the tower before night falls."

"Wait, you mean using the rope?!" Miyuki was stunned. The other two were also shocked.

"Don't worry, we will not manually climb there. I have a rope ascender here with me and a harness that comes with the rope ascender to secure us to the rope. I will carry one person at a time to carry to the tower. Once I secure one, I will return and carry another. Tell the others about this as well."

"Still sounds dangerous but if we can get out of here, then we will take the risk," Nejima strengthens his resolve.

"Good to know you are not some coward. But I will carry Miss Sena first, the glasses guy is worried about her so carrying her first would be ideal."

"I will stay and inform the others and make them come here one by one to ensure that Kaze will not suspect things," Miyuki volunteered.

Sena reluctantly agreed and Kyosei put on the harness as well as tying Sena's waist to keep her with him on the ascender. Kyosei also made sure to check if the javelin was secured enough as they couldn't afford the rope to snap while they were still ascending.

"Ready now?" Kyosei asked the nervous Sena.

"Y-yes!"

"If you are afraid of heights, cling tight to me and close your eyes."

Attaching the rope ascender to the rope, Sena clutches Kyosei's clothes like some kind of lizard as Kyosei activates the rope ascender, propelling them towards the tower where Chie and Souichi are waiting.

As much as Sena wanted to scream, she didn't want to have Kyosei get angry at her especially since he was holding her. Thankfully for her, the trip was fast and they soon arrived at the tower where Souichi looked relieved to see Sena still alive and unharmed.

"Sena!"

"Sou-kun!"

The two hug each other like they have been separated for a long time but just recently got reunited.

Chie immediately made an angry remark. "Ugh, shuddup you lovebirds! Do that flirting thing once everyone is secured! Also, you are disturbing me here!"

Kyosei also dropped the bag full of food on the ground. After he let Sena go and remove the harness from her.

"Food and water are already there. But save up a bit, it seems that we will have more company than I thought," Kyosei said to Souichi.

"Alright. But how are you going back? I am quite sure that rope ascenders do not have a way to go back down to descend.

"Don't worry, this is much faster to do."

Before Souichi can even say anything, Kyosei pulls out his crowbar and puts it on the rope with his two hands on each end of it before jumping and ziplining using the crowbar back to the gymnasium.
