Chapter 4 - Growing Up – 2

(Abaddon's POV)

It was during dinner when it happened.

(Alexa): "Abaddon, my son. There's something we want to talk with you."

She said, looking at me seriously as she finished her dinner and the maids took of her plate from the table. Father is also looking at me with a serious face. What did I do wrong?

(Abaddon): "Yes, mother? Father?"

(Donovan): "My son, you know about magic, right?"

(Abaddon): "Yes, I've read about it on the books."

I lied. Well, half lied. The magic of this world is different from mine. Instead of using magical formations, they solely use chants, therefore their magic doesn't have complicated commands, and is more straightforward and used mainly for combat.

However, they do have some magic formation system, albeit very inferior to that of earth.

(Alexa): "We want to teach you magic."

That was something that changed my every-day life drastically. Although I do love my parents, I barely know anything about them. And now, I discovered a lot. My father isn't a descendant of a noble, he was a commoner who achieved a lot in the war against the Monster King and received a noble title.

Not only that, both my parents were adventurers who traveled the whole world and killed many powerful monsters and famous villains. They even have their nicknames, my mother is The Crimson Lightning and my father is The Raging Vulcan.

I also discovered a blunder of mine. I was leaking mana. This body is young, but my magic power is massive, but I didn't think that I was leaking it at all. After all, it was the standard method to hide your mana back in earth.

Rom what my mother and father taught me, I can tell that the detection and concealment of mana in this world are more sophisticated. Therefore, my method is complete garbage here, although my parents say that it is a good method. We can only detect it because we are strong, they say, but a method of concealment that can be detected is garbage.

Well, I never worked on that field, what I used was only to just go by unnoticed in very specific situations. However, this time it will be more troublesome. I also started learning the magic of this word, and now I have a theory why their methods of concealment and detection are so good.

Their magic doesn't rely on systems and formulas, which means that the applications have some limitations, such as summoning and other similar magic being impossible if not for "ancient magic" from a long forgotten empire, that is just formulated magic.

Their magic is more brutish and completely element focused. Everybody has a natural affinity to an element, like in earth, and they have an easier time converting mana into that element. Therefore, their control of mana is precise, almost chirurgical. Because of that, they are much more in touch with mana, and can detect and conceal it with increased efficiency.

Unfortunately, their system doesn't have any means of amplification of magic. For example, back in earth, you would make a fire spear through a formula, and use another one at a very low cost of magic to increase the power of the fire spear, effectively raising the power of the magic without using even a tenth of the mana used to create it.

They don't have this here, magic is used raw, and their average mana pool seems bigger than earth's, reason for why they have such destructive power according to my parent's story about their adventures and opponents.

A few months wen by in quite calm as I learned magic. Although they didn't say it, I could clearly tell from their face s that my growth is abnormally fast. Well, I was after all someone versed in magic back on earth, and even created my own magic, something extremely rare.

However that doesn't seem to be a problem to my parents, they are quite happily teaching me magic. However, I have been neglecting the training of my body for quite a while. Therefore, today, on my fourth birthday, I asked my father for sword lessons.

(Donovan): "Alright son, let's go to the courtyard. I might not be s master swordsman, but I can handle myself quite well."

He says smiling. I still don't know the level of sword fighters of this world, so this will be interesting. I smile to my dad as he takes me to the courtyard. We make a quick visit to the armory of the mansion, taking two wooden swords.

Is this alright? Straight to sword training? Not body training first?

(Abaddon): "Dad, is it alright to just get the sword before training?"

(Donovan): "Don't worry, son, your father's style doesn't rely on physical strength. It's something that a magician can use without interfering with their magic practice."

So that means that I won't be learning actual swordsmanship? I resist a frown, and retort to my father.

(Abaddon): "That, I had a dream."

I'm basing this lie on a book that I read some time ago about a legendary swordsman that had dreams that inspired him to wield the sword and create his own style. I'm using the same excuse. As I expected, my father frowned and asked:

(Donovan): "What kind of dream, my son?"

(Abaddon): "In my dream, I had a sword in my hand, I was taller and I fought someone in armor. After I woke up, I couldn't leave the though of wielding a sword."

I said innocently, looking at my dad with the most sincere eyes that I could. My father looks at me with wide eyes.

(Donovan): "Abaddon, can you show me the moves that you used in the dream?"

I nod, grasping the wooden sword, and do some moves from my original style, connecting them, although I hold back a little so that the moves aren't perfect, but still smoother than it should be for a child. I look at my father, shock evident in his eyes. After a few moments of silence, he said:

(Donovan): "Son, let's call it a day here. I need to talk with your mother."

I nodded, and we walked back home.

(Donovan's POV)

I petted the head of my son and told him to go play. As he walked off, I remembered what I just had seen. My four years old son had Lasting Dreams, and that of a swordsman, no less. Although many of the commoners believe that the books about the hero that learned swordsmanship through his dreams are lies, it indeed happened.

It's a phenomenon called "Lasting Dreams", dreams of memories that the person never had. In my travels, I came across someone that had dreams like that in her infancy, and she was the most talented swordsman that I ever met.

However, because of her, we discovered… that those dreams belong to their previous lives. Reincarnation is something that is a common sense, it was proved as we have a goddess of reincarnation that allows us to return to the world after dying and having our memories wiped out.

However, she is lenient to those with strong wills, and allows some memories to flourish in the form of dreams. Normally, the ones that have those are a minority of martial artists, as they are normally more dedicated than mages, and have stronger willpower, therefore dreams about them are more common.

However, they usually are born to their professions, as the soul is the one that influences the talent, as well parentage, being the reason as for why sometimes the son of two mages doesn't have magic talent.

But my son has magical talent, and a great one at that. For him to have dreams about swordsmanship… I need to talk with my wife. Our son may need a better guide at swordsmanship than me.
