He was a general from the second battalion, which only fell short to the ones belonging to the first battalion. That being said he was very capable of dealing with most of the demons they had all captured and killed before. Most of the ones in the Crimson City were sent to their deaths by Brother Blue.
Dunzhao was Emodao's right hand, and that was no secret in that. Based on what he remembered, Dunzhao wasn't this strong as they could easily keep him busy every time General Xu would isolate Emodao from his demon army.
