Chapter 1 - Fatigue

11:40 pm. It was late. The exhausted figure of one Mr. Ryuunosuke Mochizuki stumbled haphazardly down the street, threatening public health and safety. The long work hours and severe lack of sleep he had to endure for the past three months had finally crept up on him now that the project was completed. He tried to make his way back home to get some rest but his legs wobbled like jelly and his body refused to listen to him. Before he realized, he soon found himself on the grassy banks of a river. The cool summer night's breeze felt pleasant on his skin and he sighed in comfort. Oh well, this place is not too bad and his home was not that far from here anyways, there's no harm in stopping for a little rest.

He lay down and deeply inhaled the scent of the cool and slightly damp earth and his heavy lids slowly closed over his tired eyes. His muscles loosened themselves one by one as his exhausted body finally succumbed to the built-up fatigue he had forced himself to ignore for so long. The cold night air was clear and refreshing, cleansing his overloaded mind and turning into a pool of tranquility. Fireflies floated from the surrounding greenery and illuminated the obsidian night. Their reflections shimmered back at them playfully in the lazily flowing river below. The magical scenery played out unbeknownst to the man lying on the grass. His long, dewy eyelashes remained still as his consciousness began to drift to a place far, far away. As though bewitched, the glowing fireflies began to land on him one by one. Their bioluminescent bodies cast a warm light onto the man's plain and unassuming face, revealing features that radiated with a gentleness rarely noticed by others.

A silent aria danced in the evening breeze, lulling the city to sleep. Its charming melody weaved through the blanket of stillness and flew past deaf ears. The air hung thick with the people's dreams. On the grassy river bank, hidden from sight, the man basking in the glow of countless fireflies slept soundly. His slow breaths were soft and shallow, ebbing like a drowsy stream. The slight movements of his ribcage was barely discernible as even his diaphragm muscle was succumbing to the lure of rest. His heartbeats diminished until there was nothing but stillness.

12:00 am. Midnight. The man named Ryuunnosuke Mochizuki died from exhaustion.
