Chapter 76 - Traps

Time passed, every soldier and monster was geared from head to toe, the walls around us were turned into stone bricks, and the land within the garrison was filled with huts and all types of stations for production of any supply.

'It has been 29 days by now' looking around I sighed, I miss my family and my world huh…

Looking at the walls, I smiled because this was my effort of training to dismantle the walls covering the previous city and bring it over here to reinforce the walls into double layers.

Walking around the garrison, soldiers began to greet me as they were training with iron swords and shields covered in a full armor made out of the combination of iron and threads. This armor is a great creation done by the goblins who seems to be smart with creating anything literally.

Catapults filled the top of the walls while the soldiers who were keeping a lookout with the help of the monsters were pacing back and forth. Beastmen have been fighting barehanded following my way of combat which I forced every soldier to learn, including the monsters.

Within the past 29 days, we made the entire hill into an impregnable fortress, and I don't know what I will face, I prepared for every situation including an invasion done by millions of soldiers. Supplies were everywhere, and the soldiers were trained for many cases in the harshest conditions.

Standing in front of the training ground I watched as the soldiers were training their endurance, forced to carry their full armor which weighs 60kg and run while swiping their blades left and right. Traps were popping up from each side, and the soldiers wouldn't dodge them but hold their shields and crouch behind each other to make the impact less effective.

Looking at their performance, I picked up a shield and a sword before moving to the training ground and stopped their training. "Stop the training and gather within the middle," I said with a smile as the soldiers in the training ground gathered together into a formation without wasting time.

Holding the shield tight, I strap on the belt of the shield on my arms and grip on the handle of the sword, "Attack me, all of you" I said as the soldiers rushed towards me with their weapons.

Cling! Clang! I reflected swords before using the shield to hit one of the soldiers, sending him flying towards his comrades. I gained an interest in the sword and shield as it was one of the best morale boosters for the troops, every time I notice them feeling exhausted, I would hit the sword on the shield, and with the noise caused from it, the soldiers will straighten up and feel more motivated.

As I was fighting the soldiers, a scout came in a rush while riding on top of a wolf, his face was pale, and his entire body was full of sweat.

"Emergency! Emergency! Clear the way!" The scout screamed as he reached the training ground before jumping off his wolf and saluting.

"Report!" I said as I looked at the scout, the scout took a deep breath before speaking "Waves, monsters of all kinds! They are beyond the ruins of the city walls… huf... Huf… we have less than a day before impact!"

I nodded "Go get something to eat and drink, you deserve it!" patting him on the back. I looked at the soldiers behind me who heard everything.

"Sir! Should I call the captains?" The werewolf who was standing far came close and asked. "Go call them and send someone to ring the bells eight times."

Walking towards the large camp within the middle of the fortress, I noticed people rushing around, I opened the tent and entered before seeing it empty. Moving towards the table, a chair stood tall in the middle, and I took my seat on it before placing my head on my hands to support it.

Tap, Tap, Tap… I kept tapping the chair handle with my other hand as the captains eventually reached the tent, the chairs began to fill, and after a few minutes, the tent was full.

"War is upon us, monsters of many races will be attacking us within a day, but we don't have time to block them all, I want each one of you to arm all the traps placed within the forest in the least amount of time, work with the scouts on what to keep a look out for and by any chance you see anything suspicious… Do Not Engage! Report back!" I said as I looked at the soldiers.

"Yes, sir!" All of the nodded, "Any questions?" I asked as I looked over the captains.

"Sir! I would recommend half of the groups to stay in the fortress and start the maintenance on all weaponry while preparing for any long engagement with the enemy." A captain spoke while thinking about every word that left his mouth.

Before I can speak another one spoke "What about the food supplies? The ones we have may last us a week but what about longer fights?"

I nodded "I believe that we can use the monsters as our food supplies, later on, the only issue would be the number of the enemy… I don't want to see any casualties in here."

A captain looked at me and smiled "Sir, with our walls, no monster will be able to land a single hit on us, we can use the forest to our advantage and with the mines blocked from the outside, we have our routes to enter it from here, we will block the gates first and keep killing them from the walls with the use of the spikes installed on the walls"

I nodded again, seems like with how much I pressured them, they became smart enough to think of different solutions, the spikes on the wall was a great idea created by one of the goblins, the only issue it had was that it needed ten men to pull on the wheels under the walls to spin the gear and launch several spikes which will also pull back itself thanks to the mechanics of it and repeat the process again.

"Good, if there is nothing else, everyone is dismissed and follow what you have been instructed, I will leave my brother Eric to provide support in the background," I said that I stood up and waited for everyone to leave.

Patting the werewolf next to me I smiled and looked at him, "Eric, you have done a great job the past month, and I believe in your mind more than anyone else in here, you have shown great courage to everyone here… you might have been ignored by most at the start, but now you are someone important, a brother to me and everyone else."

Walking out of the tent, I saw soldiers running around, some carrying stuff to the walls, some holding tools and heading outside of the gate. It seems like we will have a sleepless night, I began to walk over to the walls and inspect everything.

Every area within the hill has been covered by us, defense wise, it is impossible to break this wall even if I punched it a few times casually, I have worked on it hard by placed iron on each column to stabilize it and strengthen it, under the walls are three layers of deep holes, each supported by a few iron bars.

This entire fortress could be considered a weapon to large scale enemies yet at the same time, harmful to its allies if it wasn't used well.

As everyone was working hard to complete their tasks, time slowed to me, what will happen next? Where will they attack? Who will attack?

My mind began to process many situations, eventually, time stopped in my eyes, and I turned to look behind me at the forest that was covering us. Green and red lines appeared everywhere, and I saw the lines in the forest, each line began to connect turning to a spider web within the forest itself.

'Whoa…' My eyes widened as I watched this spectacular thing happening before I smiled and time returned to normal, and the lines disappeared.
