Chereads / Guardian of the Oracle / Chapter 7 - Then what?

Chapter 7 - Then what?

"The first Lord has awoken." Azora rose solemnly from the throne. "This proves without a doubt that the Endless Night has returned."

Issac raising his hand in the air like a schoolkid, asked nervously. "What is the Endless Night? All I know is that a long time ago it showed up and almost destroyed the world."

Vice answered with his arms crossed. "It's just as you say, it was a long time ago. No one remembers who or what it is. No recorded history of what the Endless Night is can be found. We only know what transpired."

"So what exactly happened?" he pressed.

Azora explained patiently. "The last time he rose, with him came four great rulers from the era of Kings. They rampaged the world. They wished to reclaim their old territories and once again, war with each other. They all seek the same thing, to dominate the world and its people. In life some may have had nobler reasons than others. In death though they are blinded by rage and obsession."

She started to pace back and forth in front of them, staring up at the ceiling with her finger on her chin, as if deep in thought. "We can assume that the order the Kings woke in will be the same as last time."

Vice asked curiously. "What makes you say that?"

"In my vision I saw the form of a man raising fallen soldiers from the dead. That could only be one of the Kings."

"Gorm, The Conqueror." Matthaus interrupted.

Erianna yawned, finally joining the conversation. Everyone else seemed to be lost in thought at this moment. Issac was just lost, he didn't really have a clue about any of this stuff. He felt that his village was way too sheltered from the world. Why was it that no one there was taught about this?

Azora continued calmly. "Gorm was the only King who had the power to raise his dead soldiers. No one really understood why. He was slightly weaker than the other three, and had the appearance of a rotting corpse. He will be most likely be making his way to his old capital city, which is now the city of Calu. In my vision I was also shown a shop in a town. It read Kullik General Goods. I believe that is where he is now."

The Watcher reached into his cloak and pulled out a scroll, handing it to Azora. She took it and rolled it out on the floor in front of them. It was a map of the world; he imagined it must have been very expensive. The artistry and detail was unlike any map he had ever seen before.

She indicated a spot on the map that read Kullik. "This is where he is coming from." She traced a path along the map to the east with her finger, stopping at another point: The City of Calu.

Matthaus spoke grimly. "It will probably take him about three months to get there. He will be raising an army of the dead as he travels. He will destroy everything in his path."

Azora nodded and marked another spot on the map, south of the city and across the river to the west. "We are in the Temple of Lir, outside the town of Vernami. We just need to cross the river and head North."

Erianna asked skeptically. "And then what?"

Everyone was silent for a moment as they stared at the map. He decided to break the silence.

"I want to help those people," Issac pointed at the city on the map with determination in his voice. "If we can't help the others we can at least try to save them."

Azora smiled warmly at him. "Well said."

"I don't know about defeating an army of the undead, or killing this Gorm guy. We can at least warn them though. Let them know what is coming for them, and try to get them to leave the city."

Vice stated bluntly. "Your idea is probably impossible. You're assuming that the people there would even believe you."

Azora spoke firmly. "We have to try though. I also had the same idea as Issac. We are not strong enough yet to deal with this. It's happening way too quickly. We need to try to do something. I don't want to sit around while I know people are going to be dying."

She stood up quickly and looked at them with a serious expression. "You have a week to prepare!"
