Chereads / The Mage Poe / Chapter 72 - The Border Fortress

Chapter 72 - The Border Fortress

Poe looked at the evil fluffy rabbits in the distance. Lucky or not, the fluffy rabbits walking around the broken down wall had not discovered them yet.

"S-so, what should we do? Attack them?"

Lucia asked as she sent a hesitant look towards Poe, who was busy looking at the fluffy rabbits walking around the broken down wall with hostility. Hearing Lucia speaking, he turned his attention away from the fluffy rabbits and looked at the hesitating Lucia.

"Of course! I and Lucia can take out the weaker fluffy rabbit guards, Ivy can take out the strong ones, like the fluffy rabbit guard captain."

Saying so, Poe got ready to storm into the group of fluffy rabbits and start his attack on them.

"Hold on for a second, why don't we ambush them instead, that would make things easier."

Lucia said as she grabbed hold of Poe's collar before he ran at the fluffy rabbits.

"B-but the strongest one is only level 28…"

"And you are only level 14, right? Moreover, do not forget that only Ivy would be able to take care of them alone, not you… At most you would be able to use one strong spell before fainting…"

Hearing Lucia's comment, Poe was speechless and embarrassed, she was indeed right. Poe had forgotten that the one who killed off all the high-level monsters was Ivy and not himself…

Then again, only someone like Ivy would be able to stay strong against monsters several tens of levels above herself…

Thinking this far, Poe decided that ambushing the fluffy rabbits would not be such a bad idea after all.

"How about I take care of the strong one, then you and Poe can take care of the weaker ones? That way you two can also get some combat training!"

Ivy asked as she looked towards her sister.

"Hmmm… That is a good idea… Okay, we will do that then! Is it fine with you Poe?"

"O-of course!"

Poe answered still slightly embarrassed about his earlier comments.

"O-okay now all we need is to come up with a plan of sorts…"

Poe said while looking at Lucia, she seemed to be good with things like this and she did indeed not disappoint.

"What about we make our way towards the broken wall from the right side before we attack. The fluffy rabbit guards look like they mostly focus at the black mushroom trees to the left side of the broken wall. After that, Poe and I will take care of the fluffy rabbit guard, while big sis fights the fluffy rabbit guard captain."

Saying so, Lucia pointed at the pitch-black mushroom trees to the left side of the broken wall. Looking at them, Poe wondered how he missed them when he first saw the broken wall. Maybe he was too focused on the fluffy rabbits that he ended up ignoring it?

Looking closer, Poe felt like he saw something moving around close to the pitch-black mushroom trees, but it disappeared as soon as Poe saw it.

"L-Lucia, I-I think I saw something moving…!"

Scared, Poe quickly grabbed the corner of Lucia's clothes and tugged it with a little fear as he pointed towards the pitch-black mushroom trees to their right side.

"Well… For the fluffy rabbits to be so focused on that side that they almost completely ignored defense on this side… What you saw was most likely the enemy that they are guarding against!"

Saying so, Lucia narrowed her eyes and looked towards the black mushroom trees.

"Big sis, can you take care of the monsters if some comes out from the black mushroom trees?"

"Sure~ For them to not have come out yet means that they are weaker than the fluffy rabbits here, so it should not really be a problem even if they came out~ Well they could also be stronger than the fluffy rabbits here, who knows~"

Ivy answered her sister, as a carefree smile formed on her lips with her eyes focused on the black mushroom trees.

Having formed a plan, Poe, Lucia and Ivy sneaked closer to the broken wall and just as Lucia had said, only 3 fluffy rabbit guards were watching the side they came from, but they only focused on the right side halfheartedly, as they kept looking towards the black mushroom trees from time to time.

It did not take a long time before they made it to the broken wall. Looking through the holes and cracks along the wall, Poe saw that there really were not that much inside.

All Poe saw was a few fluffy rabbit guards walking here and there, some old ruins of what looked like houses, and a small tower in the middle of the little fluffy rabbit town or whatever this place was.

"Wow~, is this a border fortress or something?"

"A border fortress? What is that? Is this not a fluffy rabbit town?"

Hearing what Ivy said, Poe tilted his head slightly to the side as he asked Ivy with a puzzled look on his face.

"Of course it is not a fluffy rabbit town! There is only fluffy rabbits with a guard class right? Moreover, this place does not really look like a town or village, just look at how few fluffy rabbits present here. Therefore, this place is most likely a border fortress! Normally a border fortress is situated at the boundary of a kingdom to protect from invading armies or monsters."

Ivy explained to Poe. Poe on the other hand slowly started trembling more and more, as Ivy explained.

"Poe? Poe! What is wrong?"

Lucia saw Poe's trembling all over with a scared expression on his face and asked him what was wrong.

"Y-you said this was most likely a border fortress… Right? D-does this not m-mean that w-we are on the borders of a f-fluffy rabbit kingdom!?"

Hearing what Poe said, both Lucia and Ivy quieted down and looked towards the fluffy rabbits patrolling on the broken wall.

"W-we need to inform the mage guild about this…!"

Lucia said as her face had a grave expression.

"Y-y-yes, L-let's l-leave i-immediately"

Poe said as he and Lucia slowly started moving away from the border fortress.

"Hold up!"

Ivy said, as she grabbed both their collars making them fall clumsily onto the ground.

"The fluffy rabbits here are not that strong~ and Poe needs to reach level 15 as well~ is this not a perfect place to train in live combat~?"

Ivy said while showing a bright smile, but to Poe and Lucia, that smile looked nothing short of terrifying.
